V for Vendetta and DC Crime featuring Jimmy Olsen series in the works for HBO

DC logo

There’s two stories out there concerning television series based on DC properties.

A television series based on V for Vendetta is in the works for HBO. Pete Jackson is attached to write the adaption with James Gunn and Peter Safran of DC Studios set to executive produce it. Also executive producing is Ben Stephenson via Poison Pen and Leanne Klein of Wall to Wall Media, which is part of Warner Bros. Television Studios UK. Warner Bros. Television will produce.

V for Vendetta was written by Alan Moore with art by David Lloyd and originally released in 1982 in the British anthology Warrior before being published by DC in 1988.

The story is set in a Britain dystopia where a fascist government has taken over. An anarchist known as V who wears a Guy Fawkes mask attempts to topple the government.

The series was made into a film which was released in 2005 starring Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman. There’s been previous attempts to adapt the comic to television and the television series Pennyworth was to be a prequel to V for Vendetta but that was never fleshed out before the series was canceled according to showrunners Danny Cannon and Bruno Heller with the series going into the British Civil War that would give rise to the fascist government.

While it might seem like an odd choice for a television series, Watchmen which was also created by Moore with Dave Gibbons got a television series that was praised upon its release.

There’s also news that DC Studios is working on another series, DC Crime, that would be a “true crime docuseries” hosted by Jimmy Olsen played by Skyler Gisondo. The first season would focus on Gorilla Grodd, mostly known as a villain of The Flash.

Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault would serve as writers, executive producers, and showrunners on the series. James Gunn and Peter Safran of DC Studios would also executive produce, with DC Studios’ Galen Vaisman overseeing production.

DC logo

DC Studios Co-Chairmen and CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have announced plans for their first 10 film and television projects under the new DC banner they lead across film, television, and animation. Gunn and Safran are designing and implementing a long-term interconnected story for the iconic franchise and characters, and today shared details on “Chapter 1” focused on “Gods and Monsters” with five new films and five television series for HBO Max already in development.

The plan is for a connected universe with all ten projects set within the same shared DC Universe. Characters will crossover between projects.

The reveal has some surprising announcements but shows a very wide variety of characters and projects. Live action, animation, television, and film, some of the projects are high profile characters and some are sure to be the stars of tomorrow.

What also stands out from the announcement is Gunn’s promotion of other projects that will be outside of this connected world and will be labeled as “Elseworlds”. Examples are The Batman and the upcoming Joker sequel.

Film Projects:

  • Superman: Legacy – written by Gunn, the film will hit theaters on July 11, 2025, and focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.
  • The Authority – DC’s WildStorm characters will join the DCU as members of The Authority take matters into their own hands to do what they believe is right
  • The Brave and the Bold – the DCU will introduce its Batman and Robin in this unusual father-son story inspired by Grant Morrison’s comic series
  • Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow – this science fiction adventure, which will be based on Tom King’s amazing, award-winning recent comics stories, presents a Supergirl viewers are not used to seeing
  • Swamp Thing – the film will investigate the dark origins of Swamp Thing

Television projects for HBO Max:

  • Creature Commandos – a seven-episode animated show in which Amanda Waller creates a black ops team out of monstrous prisoners; Gunn wrote all the episodes of the first season
  • Waller – starring Viola Davis, this series features Team Peacemaker and will be written by Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (Supernatural)
  • Booster Gold – Booster Gold uses basic technology from the future to pretend to be a superhero in present day
  • Lanterns – this enormous TV event series follows intergalactic cops John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they uncover a dark mystery
  • Paradise Lost – set in Themyscira, home of the Amazons and birthplace of Wonder Woman, this drama focuses on the genesis and political intrigue of an island of all women

It’s an interesting mix of known and unknown properties for the wide masses. What do you think of the initial lineup? Sound off in the comments!

James Gunn teases the DC Cinematic Universe’s future including new Superman… without Henry Cavill

James Gunn took to Twitter to tease what’s coming as far as the DC cinematic universe. While specifics were limited, Gunn did say that part of the slate is a new Superman film focused on the earlier part of Superman’s life, though not an origin story. That means Superman won’t be played by Henry Cavill.

It’s a big shift from recent announcements. In October, Cavill declared “I am back as Superman” after his appearance as the character in Black Adam. This was just a day before the new duo of James Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as heading up DC’s properties for Warner Bros. Discovery.

Below is Gunn’s Twitter thread.

Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.

Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.

But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.

This is slightly different than Cavill’s statement which makes it seem like his time is completely over, while Gunn leaves open the possibility of future work.

Henry Cavill Superman

It’s the latest drama concerning DC’s movies that include rumors that execs weren’t happy about Dwayne Johnson’s inclusion of Cavill’s Superman in the film and fans claiming it was all a stunt pushed by Johnson to hype the film throwing Cavill under the bus in a way.

Gunn will be writing the untitled Superman film but the director hasn’t been decided.

Also mentioned was a meeting with Ben Affleck who has said he wants to direct a film. They’re working on finding the right project to make that happen.

James Gunn and Peter Safran are DC Studios’ co-CEOs

DC logo

DC Studios finally has someone(s) in charge. James Gunn and Peter Safran have been tapped to lead the newly created entity that will oversee DC properties for Warner Bros. Discovery.

In a statement, Gunn and Safran said:

We’re honored to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children. We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multilayered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved. Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent. We’re excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told. We’re especially enthusiastic about doing all of this with Mike, Pam, Casey, Channing, and the whole Warner Bros. Discovery team, and are grateful to David Zaslav, whose bold vision for the future of the franchise we share and allows for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Most of all, we can’t wait to bring you all into the story of the DCU.

The duo will oversee film, tv, and animation at DC Studios. Their positions begin on November 1st and they will report directly to president and CEO David Zaslav.

Both are expected to work on projects outside of DC, today saw the release of a trailer for Gunn’s latest Marvel project.

Gunn has earned praise for his work on comic properties for both Marvel and DC. He delivered the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy (and holiday special) for Marvel and The Suicide Squad and HBO Max series Peacemaker for DC.

Safran has produced DC properties including Aquaman (and its sequel), Shazam! (and its sequel) and The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker with Gunn.
