PETA Takes Aim at Games Workshop and Warhammer

peta-facebook-logoPETA, the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, has sent a letter to Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree asking for fur garments to be removed from their “Warhammer characters.” Warhammer is two games and settings Warhammer Fantasy/Warhammer: Age of Sigmar are fantasy based and Warhammer 40K is a futuristic grimdark world. Both games are tabletop miniature games where players build physical model kits creating an army to battle their opponents. Both games’ stories are violent featuring over the top violence, demons, fascist rules, xenophobia, and genocide. But, it’s the treatment of make believe animals that has PETA up in arms, not the Slaanesh hoards wearing human skin.

The letter reads:

I’m writing to you on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to ask that you consider removing “fur” garments from your Warhammer characters at the next opportunity.

From the mighty Leman Russ and Horus Lupercal to Chaos Warriors and the Sisters of Silence, Warhammer features an abundance of characters who wear what appear to be animal pelts, which just doesn’t add up. These battle-hardened warriors are known for their martial prowess – but wearing the skins of dead animals doesn’t take any skill.

Indeed, nothing on the bloody battlefields of Warhammer’s war-torn world could match the horrific reality that foxes, minks, rabbits, and other living beings experience at the hands of the fur trade. Those killed for their fur typically first endure a bleak life inside a tiny, filthy wire cage before being electrocuted, drowned, or even skinned alive. Or they may be out minding their business and get caught in horrific bone-crushing steel-jaw traps – often languishing for days before eventually dying of hunger, thirst, or blood loss.

And while we appreciate that these are fictional characters, draping them in what looks to be a replica of a dead animal sends the message that wearing fur is acceptable – when, in fact, it has no more place in 2017 than it would in the year 40,000.

Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you.

5th-edition-njalWhile the letter is interesting it shows a lack of knowledge of the worlds Games Workshop has created, either ignoring the fantasy setting or conflating the two games, not to mention some of the claims… they clearly haven’t read any of Chaos’ tomes. Some of that makes what happens to animals fuzzy happy times.

The tabletop miniature game’s world has also been depicted in novels, animated film, and comic books. Currently, Titan Comics is publishing two series set in the world.

This isn’t the first time PETA has stepped into the world of geekdom. The organization has criticized various video games in the past and even used video games to help promote their cause. I look forward to their eventual tabletop miniature wargame rules set.

Judge Talks Justice League in Her Opinion

The New 52 Justice League Action Figure 7-Pack Boxed SetIt looks like discussing superheroes is the new hotness when it comes to opinions issued by judges. Following the Supreme Court’s lead, D.C. Circuit Judge Patricia Millett decided to discuss Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Justice League in her opinion in PETA v. Dep’t of Agriculture.

The case concerned the USDA extending the Animal Welfare Act to birds. They’ve taken ten years to figure out how to do so, so PETA sued them.

Here’s what the judge said in the opinion.

The same principles that prevent any individual caped crusader from using the courts to vindicate his or her views as to the proper enforcement of the laws should preclude the same gambit by a group of likeminded individuals. As for Batman or Wonder Woman, so too for the Justice League.

There’s a law that says as an individual you can’t sue an agency to enact your opinion. Since individuals can’t do it, then a group can’t. That’s the above in a nutshell.

This is the second high-profile time a justice has cited comics. Justice Kagan talked Spider-Man in her opinion Kimble v. Marvel Enterprises. Maybe Judge Millett with the Justice League consider the Circuit Court she’s in?

New York Comic Con 2014: PETA and Bluewater Team Up Again

This week, as thousands flock to the city for New York Comic Con at the Javits Center, PETA and comic publisher Bluewater Productions will trot out a provocative comic ad urging the conventioneers to steer clear of the city’s controversial horse-drawn carriage rides. The poster, which will be plastered throughout Midtown this week, portrays a spooked horse colliding with a cab and sending panicked pedestrians flying—similar to the June incident in which a terrified horse broke free from his driver and plowed through Central Park into oncoming traffic.

Titled “STOMPED”—in parody of ads for the percussive musical STOMP—the poster features the distraught horse rearing up above a baby carriage as well as a comic book–style graphic that reads, “Carriage Horses Plus Traffic Equals Disaster!!!” This year alone, 13 children and infants were among the 40 people injured in carriage accidents around the country, including high-profile incidents in Manhattan.

The poster is designed by Michael Dorman and is the second time PETA and Bluewater have teamed up for an awareness campaign.

This fall, Mayor Bill de Blasio will officially announce his long-debated plans to unveil a bill retiring the horses.

PETA and Bluewater take on SeaWorld at SDCC

Tens of thousands of individuals head to San Diego this week for the geekfest that is San Diego Comic-Con. And while much of the show will revolve around fantasy entertainment, that doesn’t mean some real world messaging can’t be included too. As fans de-plane, the first thing that they’ll see won’t be a promo for The Avengers or The Walking Dead but a huge graphic cartoon of a captive orca with SeaWorld‘s CEO in his mouth. The provocative display, which urges convention-goers to steer clear of SeaWorld because of marine-mammal cruelty and confinement, is a joint project between Bluewater Productions and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

The installation cost $24,000, and greets passengers on their way to baggage claim at the center of Terminal 2 at the airport.

Bluewater designed the cartoon in the wake of last year’s hit documentary Blackfish. The film—viewed by 21 million on CNN alone—explored SeaWorld’s capture and confinement of orcas, which led the whale named Tilikum to kill three people.

The documentary isn’t without controversy, and ever since SeaWorld has been in damage control as attendance has dropped since.
