The Superfan Podcast launches Season 2 with more Guests Talking about What They Love Besides Comics

SuperFan Podcast Season 2

What fascinates, captivates, and influences the people who create comics and graphic novels? In Season Two of the Superfan Podcast co-hosts Kristen Simon (Executive Editor at Mad Cave Studios’ Nakama Press), Christian Gossett (Story Artist, Eyes of Wakanda, The Red Star), and Superfan Promotions founder David Hyde will talk with some of the biggest stars of the comic book industry to find out what they’re passionate about — outside of comics.

The Superfan Podcast season two debuted with a conversation about professional wrestling with Eisner and Ignatz Award winning cartoonist, designer, zinemaker, and illustrator Jim Rugg (True Crime Funnies, Hulk Grand Design). In the freewheeling, no-holds-barred episode, Rugg reflects on who has the best gimmick in wrestling, the appeal of heels and heroes, and the art of kayfabe.

Season Two of the Superfan Podcast features an all-star line-up of award-winning writers and artists, including Gender Queer cartoonist Maia Kobabe on the appeal of K-pop, #1 New York Times bestselling cartoonist Johnnie Christmas (Swim Team) on the mystery of Mike Flanagan’s Midnight Mass, Eisner Award-winning artist/designer Paul Pope (THB) on the glorious career of guitarist Rowland S Howard, Eisner Award-winning artist Erica Henderson (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl) on her love of Terry Pratchett’s seminal, satirical Discworld novels and acclaimed artist Elsa Charretier (Love Everlasting) on the many merits of game-based dog training. For each episode, the co-hosts also share a dessert recipe and a recommended cocktail and mocktail inspired by the conversation.

In the K-pop world…there’s people buying every single album a whole group has released, or maybe every single variant album a group has released, or they’re trying to collect every single photocard ever released of a specific member of a specific group…The collecting impulse is strong!

Dessert

BTS-Approved Street Snack: Quick & Easy Hotteok (Korean Sweet Pancakes)

If K-pop had a smell, it might just be cinnamon sugar melting inside a crisp, golden pancake. Hotteok (호떡) is a classic Korean street dessert that’s been fueling idol trainees, fans waiting in concert lines, and late-night café crowds for decades. Think of it as Korea’s answer to the doughnut + crepe + hug combo — soft, sweet, and a little dramatic when that caramel filling oozes out.

Total THB Vol. 1 Brings Back Paul Pope’s series to print, but does it hold up?

Mars is a planet divided. In the north, the bohemian Plutonium City teems with music and art. In the south, the people of Velo City are stifled by an oppressive bureaucracy with a tightening grip. And it is in Velo City that we find HR Watson, the sheltered daughter of a wealthy industrialist, and THB, her loyal but mysterious bodyguard who can expand from a tiny rubber ball to a nine-foot-tall humanoid with just a splash of water. To HR, THB is a novelty―a strange new toy of dubious value. But when she finds herself in the crosshairs of her father’s enemies, HR will quickly discover the true extent of THB’s power.

Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus delivers a new take in the Blade Runner universe

Titan Comics has announced a new take on the iconic Blade Runner universe with Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus. Set in the sprawling neon metropolis of Tokyo, the three-part, 12-issue saga will be scripted by break-out writer Kianna Shore and returning creator Mellow Brown, with art by Rodolfo Taibo.

Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus follows the sole survivors of an ill-fated Off-World military squad—Stix, a Replicant combat model, and Mead, a battle-hardened Marine—and their dogged search for an unknown traitor who left them to die on the battlefield. After escaping back to Tokyo, the unlikely pair’s quest for revenge leads to their formation of a clandestine private detective service.

Stix and Mead stray into an even more treacherous battlefield, a three-way “patent war” between the ruthless operatives from the Tyrell Corporation and a rival tech company known as Chesire, with its own version of synthetic humans, and powerful Yakuza clans wanting in on the action.

Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus #1 features a range of incredible covers, from artists including Christian Ward and Paul Pope. Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus #1 goes on sale July 31, 2024.

Rafael Grampá’s Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham debuts on Batman Day

Rafael Grampá’s dynamic art style has earned him legions of fans worldwide and this September Grampá brings his talents to Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham, a new DC Black Label limited series. The new series debuts Saturday, September 16, Batman Day!

Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham brings Grampá’s twisted vision of both the Dark Knight and the city of Gotham to life in a tale that reaches its icy black tendrils into the deepest and darkest corners of human nature to leave you gasping for breath—and begging for more!

In a Gotham City where every day feels darker and more irredeemable than the last, Batman makes a definitive choice—to kill off the Bruce Wayne identity for good and embrace the cape and cowl full-time. But though he knows the streets of Gotham, Batman will soon come to find that he hardly knows himself. A serial killer is on the loose, and while the murder victims seem random at first, every clue draws Batman closer to the terrifying truth—that they are all connected, not just to each other, but to him as well. When an all-new rogues gallery of utterly depraved villains begins to emerge from the depths of the city, Batman will have to contend with the very nature of evil—including that which lurks in the darkest corners of his own heart—to face what is coming for the city he has sworn to protect.

In addition to Grampá’s breathtaking cover and interior art, a who’s who of comic book luminaries lend their talents to this debut issue in the form of some incredible variant covers.

Fan-favorite artist Jim Lee will be providing a variant cover (featuring colors by series colorist Matheus Lopes), with additional variants from comic book icon and Golden Child collaborator Frank Miller and renowned Batman artist David Finch. A black-and-white version of Lee’s cover will be available as a 1-in-25 “ratio” variant, along with a 1-in-50 variant cover by Priscilla Petraites, a 1-in-100 variant cover from Paul Pope, and a 1-in-250 black-and-white variant cover by Miller, also based on his cover art.

Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham #1 will also be available (at participating retailers) in a “noir” version, showcasing the complete first issue (art and letters) of the story in vivid black and white.
