McDonnell has produced over a dozen picture books, including New York Times bestsellers The Gift of Nothing and Me . . . Jane (a Caldecott Honor biography of Jane Goodall). Both were adapted as musicals for the Kennedy Center. He has collaborated on books with author Eckhart Tolle (Guardians of Being), poet Daniel Ladinsky (Darling, I Love You), and His Holiness the Dalai Lama (Heart to Heart). This year will see the West Coast premier of The Gift of Nothing – A Musical for Children of All Ages at the Marin Theater in Mill Valley, California. The Gift of Nothing follows Mooch the dog as he searches for the perfect gift for his best friend Earl the cat, only to discover that the greatest gift isn’t something you can wrap—it’s the gift of presence, friendship, and togetherness. Playful songs are underscored by warmth and humor to deliver a deeply touching message to young audiences and their families about the power and importance of social connection and imagination.
Special Experiences and Family-Friendly Fun
Marin Theatre’s production includes pre-show story hour in the lobby,hot chocolate and snack boxes available for purchase, and a festive holiday atmosphere. On Sunday, December 21st, the theatre will host a dog adoption event on the patio, giving families the opportunity to meet adoptable pets from Muttville Senior Dog Rescue. On Saturday, December 20th Marin Theatre will host a “relaxed performance” at 11 a.m., providing accommodations for guests who might benefit from a modified pre-show and performance environment—including those with autism, sensory or communication differences, or developmental disabilities.
Joseph O’Malley will be reprising his role of Ozzie, a good, kindhearted man and Earl the dog’s “person,” making a triumphant return from the Kennedy Center stage in 2014! Joseph recently appeared in Do You Feel Anger? and Waste at Marin Theatre, as well as Ms. Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley. Other Bay Area Theatre: Berkeley Rep. (The Far Country), Aurora Theatre Co. (1984), Cal Shakes (War of the Roses), Marin Shakespeare and Center Rep. He has also performed at The Kennedy Center, The Guthrie Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse and B Street Theatre. Jordan Covington will be playing the genius of smooth positivity and enthusiasm–Mooch the cat! Jordan Covington’s most recent credits include Timon of Athens (ACT), The Tempest (Marin Shakespeare), Co-Founders (ACT), Fat Ham and Waitress (San Francisco Playhouse). He also performed in the USA premiere of Innocence at San Francisco Opera and In The Heights (Center Repertory). Covington’s favorite roles include Wale Owusu in Nollywood Dreams (SF Playhouse), Benny in In The Heights (Berkeley Playhouse), Chase in Finding Chase (New Canon Theatre), and Teddy/Nicholas in A Guide For The Homesick (Theatre Rhinoceros). Other local credits include Richie in Chorus Line (I Can Do That Theatre); and West Side Story and Pippin (Berkeley Playhouse).
Making her Marin Theatre debut, Amanda Le Nguyen will be playing the role of Earl the dog, full of genius of exuberant joy and goodness! Amanda is a multifaceted Vietnamese American artist based in the Bay Area. She was recently seen in the world premiere of Cuckoo Edible Magic (SFBATCO). Other credits include Vietgone (OKC Rep and CLTC), the world premiere of The Hippest Trip, Soul Train theMusical, Poor Yella Rednecks and A Christmas Carol (A.C.T.), Patty Di Marco in School of Rock (PAP), Annelle in Steel Magnolias (LASC). Other past credits include the musical adaptation of Twelfth Night(SFPH), Shout! The Mod Musical (SBMT), and the local tour of Don’t Let Pigeon Drive the Bus (BACT).
Charisse Loriaux returns to Marin Theatre as Millie–a slightly batty cat lady, and Mooch the cat’s “person”. She is honored to be returning to the Marin Theatre Company after playing Meiko in the Bay Area revival of Eureka Day. Recently, she portrayed Hippolyta/Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Marin Shakespeare Company and she engaged audiences as Aurora, a professional wrestler, in Work/Shoot at Playground SF. Charisse has collaborated with esteemed companies such as San Francisco Playhouse, Aurora Theatre Company, Magic Theatre, Crowded Fire Theater, Shotgun Players, Lorraine Hansberry Theatre, Berkeley Playhouse, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. A proud graduate of SJSU, Charisse recently celebrated 20 years with Kaiser Permanente Educational Theatre.
Matthias Bossi will be making his Marin Theatre debut as Frank–Millie’s somewhat grumphious, tender-hearted husband. He will also be playing drums and percussion. Matthias Bossi was a member of the seminal bands Skeleton Key, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, and Fred Frith’s Cosa Brava. As a founder of the recording collective The Book of Knots, he’s had the pleasure of collaborating with Mike Patton, Blixa Bargeld, Tom Waits, Mike Watt, David Thomas, and Jon Langford. Bossi’s voiceover work can be heard on the sensational Little Baby’s Ice Cream commercials, and also on a guided audio tour of Golden Gate Park produced by SF-Based company, Detour. He currently writes music for This American Life, Hot Money, and journalist Michael Lewis’ hit podcast Against The Rules, and is neck-deep in the musical score for Mewgenics, a wild and wacky cat-centric video game created by indie developer Ed McMillen.
Seen last season in It’s True, It’s True, It’s True, Alicia M.P. Nelson will be returning to Marin Theatre as Doozy, a spunky, web-obsessed little girl, and neighbor. Nelson holds a BFA in Acting from Boston University, and has trained in both classical theatre and Commedia dell’Arte in Greece and Italy respectively. She’s worked across the country in theatres including CalShakes, the San Francisco Mime Troupe, WAM Theatre, TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, Hillbarn Theatre, SF Playhouse, Berkeley Rep, and more.

Between his compassionate, heartfelt MUTTS comic strips, his 18 years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Humane Society of the United States, and his work on the board for the Fund for Animals, renowned cartoonist Patrick McDonnell has spent his life helping and celebrating animals in need. To further this great effort, MUTTS is joining forces with Animal Care Centers of NYC, Muddy Paws Rescue, and Isabel Klee (@SimonSits) for the Adopt Love Campaign to raise awareness for pet adoption and fostering. Timed to coincide with Clear the Shelters Month, the Adopt Love campaign will feature new art from McDonnell, a giving campaign, and more on Mutts.com through August.
The Adopt Lovecampaign will feature a giving campaign benefitting ACC’s STAR Fund, which provides life-saving medical and surgical care to dogs, cats, and rabbits; spotlights on adoptable animals at ACC; original content and storytelling to showcase the behind-the-scenes work of animal rescuers and the lifesaving impact of fostering and adopting; and new comic art and merchandise from Patrick McDonnell.

Beginning on Saturday, November 7, The Arts Council of Princeton, New Jersey will host a gallery show celebrating the art of renowned cartoonist and Mutts creator Patrick McDonnell. The exhibit will feature hand-colored, one-of-a-kind prints from McDonnell’s recent nationally best-selling book Breaking the Chain: The Guard Dog Story and his paintings from 2023’s The Super Hero’s Journey. The Arts Council of Princeton will host an opening reception on Saturday, November 16, from 3-5 PM ET and an artist talk and book signing with Patrick McDonnell on Saturday, November 30 at 3 PM ET at the Paul Robeson Center for the Arts.
Over the years, the Mutts comic strip character known as “Guard Dog” has played an important role in raising awareness about the cruelty of tethering, and has inspired countless readers to become involved in animal welfare. Breaking the Chain: The Guard Dog Storybegins when Guard Dog is abandoned by his owner, left alone and suffering. But he’s soon discovered by his animal friends Mooch and Earl, and Doozy, a kindly neighborhood girl, who work together to rescue their friend. This exhibit celebrates the release of both Guard Dog and the new book published by Abrams ComicArts. Each one-of-a-kind print on display is hand-colored by the artist and includes an original remarque.
Imbued with the creativity, artwork, and heart of Patrick McDonnell, The Super Hero’s Journeyis a graphic novel love letter to the classic Marvel super heroes including the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Black Panther, and Spider-Man. Using the Marvel Universe as avatars, McDonnell muses on how comics changed his life and inspired him to become a cartoonist, instilling a moral sensibility that he carries through his work and his life. McDonnell uses acrylic latex, oil stick, ink, and collage to create these striking paintings and create a continuation of the story of self-discovery told in his graphic novel.
The Arts Council of Princeton’s Paul Robeson Center for the Arts is located at 102 Witherspoon Street in Princeton, New Jersey. The gallery is open from 9 AM to 5 PM Mondays-Thursdays, 9 AM to 4 PM Fridays and Saturdays, and from 9 AM to 1 PM on Sundays.
The Super Hero’s Journey and Breaking the Chain Exhibitswill be open to the public from Saturday, November 9, to Saturday, December 7. A portion of the proceeds from the Breaking the Chainprints will be donated to the local animal shelter, SAVE, to support homeless animals and real-life guard dogs in need.

He has been actively lettering comics for the past five years and has worked as a graphic designer in the print industry for over 20 years. His previous lettering jobs vary from children’s books to horror. He has lettered superhero books for Advent Comics, was part of The Mike Wieringo TELLOS Tribute, and the Puerto Rico Strong fundraising anthology. He also participated in the first Blood, Skulls & Bones Kickstarter campaign, and others such as Broke Down and 4 Dead Bodies (#1-4), Cthulhu Invades Wonderland, and more.
Heather Gibb, appearing Saturday from 11am-12pm on at the Cards Comics & Collectibles booth (#916), co-owns and operates indie publishing company Orange Cone Productions with her husband Travis. As an editor, she enjoys taking part in bringing out the best in creators and their stories. As a writer, Heather uses her sense of humor and passion for justice as central themes in her work. Heather enjoys spending time with her family, and has also worked in the field of Child Welfare for over ten years. She has worked on titles such as Granite State Punk, Cthulhu Invades Wonderland, Pup Van Winkle, and The Super-Delish Sing-Along Comic: Cottage Cheese.
Travis Gibb, appearing Saturday from 11am-12pm on at the Cards Comics & Collectibles booth (#916), is a Ringo-nominated creator and has been working in comics off and on for over a decade, producing: Coins of Judas, Granite State Punk, Voodoo Nations, and Cthulhu Invades Oz/Wonderland. He has published books with Scout Comics, Caliber Comics, Image Comics, Second Sight, and Band of Bards. Travis is blessed to work with his wife, Heather, in their co-owned publishing company Orange Cone Productions, where she also works with him as his editor. Last but not least, he is the proud father of two awesome daughters and one amazing son.
David Mack is the Emmy-nominated, New York Times Best-Selling author and artist of Kabuki, writer of Marvel’s Daredevil, cover artist of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods and Norse Mythology, Jessica Jones, and Fight Club 2 by Chuck Palahniuk. He is artist on Marvel’s Jessica Jones opening titles and Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier film titles, as well as Cultural Ambassador for the US Department of State.
Mack created the Marvel Studios character Echo, who now has her own Marvel TV series on Disney+ and is featured in the Hawkeye Disney+ series. Mack has signed on to direct the HBO MAX television series of Cover, adapted from the graphic novel which is inspired by his work overseas for the US State Department. Cover was nominated for three Eisner Awards: Best Graphic Novel, Best Cover Artist, and Best Painter.
Mack created artwork for the opening titles of the Jessica Jones Netflix TV series (winner of the Peabody Award), based on the book on which he was co-collaborator. The opening titles he worked on with Imaginary Forces garnered an Emmy Nomination in the category of Outstanding Main Titles. For the Academy Award-nominated film Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Mack created the art and concept for the titles sequence with Sarofsky Designs, which received recognition for the Excellence in Titles Design Award.
Mack’s comic book work has garnered nominations for ten Eisner Awards, four International Eagle Awards, and both the Harvey and Kirby Awards in the category of Best New Talent, as well as many other national and international awards and nominations.
Mack created the final two seasons of Dexter Early Cuts episodes for Showtime (the first, collaborating with legendary artist Bill Sienkiewicz). The latest season earned him nominations for both the Writers Guild of America and the Producers Guild of America.
In 2016, the US State Department honored Mack as a Cultural Ambassador selected to travel abroad to teach storytelling in other countries. In the country of Georgia, Mack taught at settlement camps for displaced persons, the Asylum Seekers Center, the Marneuli Youth Center, Tbilisi Arts Academy, and Special Needs school, and the Tbilisi Palace of Fine Arts Museum featured a massive exhibit of Mack’s work and books.
In North Africa and Asia, Mack taught at the school for the Deaf in Tunisia and Singapore, as well as several other schools and universities as a State Department envoy, and was a special guest speaker for an event in Libya.
Mack had gallery exhibits of his work in Paris and Brussels, and recently in Los Angeles and Chicago, presented with originals of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, and he spoke in Barcelona at the OFFFest presentation of trailblazing artists and designers, and delivered an inspiring TED Talk.
Mack directed popular music videos for Amanda Palmer and Dashboard Confessional, and has recently completed a new creator-owned project with Brian Michael Bendis from DC Comics called Cover, which earned him Best Comic Artist of the Year from Comic Watch. Mack is developing his creator-owned comic book Kabuki as a TV series with Sony. In 2018, Mack was honored with the prestigious Inkpot Award for his Achievements in Comicbook Art.

Evan (Doc) Shaner is a DC Comics exclusive cartoonist. His past works include Future Quest, The Terrifics, Man of Steel, Supergirl, Doom Patrol, Strange Adventures, and The New Champion of SHAZAM! among others. He lives in Michigan with his wife, two children, and their dog.
A New York Times Best Selling author with previous works on DC’s Batman, Superman, and Justice League, and Image Comics’ Wytches, Scott Snyder has made a name for himself, with his current focus on his creator-owned books such as Nocterra, Chain, We Have Demons, Clear, Night of the Ghoul, Barnstormers, Dudley Datson, Canary, Duck and Cover, and Book of Evil.
The multi-talented Jim Starlin has worked on both writing and creating art for some of the most noteworthy creations since his entry into the field of comics in the 1970s. The mind behind the Marvel character Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu, he is also responsible for a number of noteworthy cosmic characters in the Marvel Universe, including Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, and the villainous Thanos, all of whom are featured in the major motion picture, Guardians of the Galaxy. Sean Von Gorman is an NYC-based comics illustrator and writer. He is known for co-creating Toe Tag Riot (Black Mask Studios), and Pawn Shop (Z2 Comics) with Joey Esposito. He has recently reunited with Esposito on his latest work, The Pedestrian. He has also contributed art for projects published by Image, Dark Horse Comics, and IDW, as well as anthologies such as Occupy Comics (Black Mask) and the Eisner Award-winning Love Is Love (DC/IDW). In addition to his comics work, Sean has also contributed art for Neil Gaiman’s Neverwear and features for Alt Press Magazine and The New Yorker. He is also a brilliant guerrilla marketer, who has been known to handcuff himself to things and escape straitjackets to promote his comics. His next project, Ghost Planet, was released in 2022.
