Green Lantern #19

Go all in with Green Lantern as Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps are given a new mandate to patrol the galaxy, fight crime, and stop the rise of “fractal” Lanterns throughout the universe. Green Lantern #19 picks up the status-quo introduced in Green Lantern: Fractured Spectrum #1 in an issue that’s slows the momentum.

Written by Jeremy Adams, Green Lantern #19 picks up on this new concept of “fractal” Lanterns and what the lack of Lantern batteries means to the universe. To help solve the problem, Hal and Kyle recruit a team to head into space and figure out whatever is going on. But, first, some time on Earth as everyone is gathered and Hal has his time with Star Sapphire.

It’s all an ok follow up that might catch readers up who missed the one-shot, but overall, the comic feels a little odd at times and a bit slow. Why Hal and Kyle need help and not going to the other Lanterns isn’t really explained too well. What their focus on too is danced around for the most part. It just feels like a chapter of the story that should be pages instead of an entire issue. It doesn’t help so much of the comic is focused on Star Sapphire who we’d expect to not be in much of this initial story as Hal and the crew head deep into space. On its own, it just feels a bit like a filler issue.

Then there’s the art. A trio of artists, Fernando Pasarin, Oclair Albert, and Jason Paz come together for the issue with a style that’s rather off-putting at times. Characters look kind of goofy at moments with odd proportions and the lack of polish and excitement we’ve see from past artists on the series. The fact that three artists contributed to the issue…

Green Lantern #19 is fine if you’re really into Green Lantern or the one-shot got you interested, like it did me, but there’s little presented that you probably can’t skip and pick up on in the next issue. Overall, a missed opportunity to continue the excitement of the new direction.

His evolving understanding of his powers has opened Wally to new avenues of sci-fi adventure, and attuned his senses to strange new ideas. Something whispers from the dark vibrations beyond the Speed Force, and as Wally experiments with creative new approaches to his powers he encounters new realms, mysterious allies and mind-shattering terrors. Starting with a prelude in the soon-to-be-legendary The Flash #800, the chronicles of the Fastest Man Alive take an action-packed turn towards cosmic horror.

On June 20, Wonder Woman #800 comes to shelves and Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad‘s “Whatever Happened to the Warrior of Truth?” comes to its conclusion. Review: Generations Shattered #1

Generations Shattered #1

Generations Shattered #1 is an interesting comic. As a standalone miniseries, the story would be quite compelling and engaging. But, with its release of “Future State”, the comic isn’t released in a vacuum. Spinning out of Dark Nights: Death Metal, the story involves a villain using the messed up time and history to shape their own. A group of heroes throughout time are gathered to save the day.

The concept of Generations Shattered #1 and where it goes would be an event miniseries I’d take a lot of interest in normally. But, it’s a bit of an oddity with the release of all of the other “Future State” comics. While they focus on possible future events, this one features a villain attempting to shape a new reality and history. Where it fits into this reshaping of the DC Universe and history is a bit of a headscratcher. While time seems to have mended as per other comics, maybe not? It’s a little unclear how this fits into what’s going on.

Written by Dan Jurgens, Andy Schmidt, and Robert Venditti, Generations Shattered #1 brings the heroes together in an oversized first issue. Dragged out feels like a better way to describe it. The issue is mostly the heroes being gathered as time is erased as it’s being rewritten. Over 45 pages are dedicated to this creating a slow build and long way to get to the point. Other comics have done the “gathering of characters” and their introduction quicker and in a much more entertaining way.

What this does though is give a massive amount of artists to stretch their legs. Each segment is handled by a different team giving the comic a jam-session sort of feel. That could be interesting as well if any of the art really popped. There’s not bad but there’s little that’s exciting either. Still, it’s fun to see the different styles and takes on the characters from so many artists.

Generations Shattered #1 is an oddity of a comic. It’s hampered by its release along “Future State” making its story a bit confusing. The concept is quite good and entertaining, especially where it leaves things. But, it takes forever to get to the interesting part. It’s a comic I both felt like a chore to read but at the same time I want to see where it goes.
