Shrub: The Collected Edition, Fanbase Press‘ latest Kickstarter campaign, collects the Graphic Medicine series exploring grief and connection, featuring all-new contributions from some of the biggest names in entertainment and the field of mental health. We have the exclusive reveal that  Dr. David J. Schonfeld, MD, FAAP (Director, National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles) will be contributing an all-new resource guide on processing grief.

In this middle grade adventure, readers will join Shrub who is, well… a shrub… for a cross-country road trip to Hollywood! Join Shrub and a grieving brother and sister as they head out in search of connection. On their journey, pit stops, wacky plant enthusiasts, uprooting, and re-routing abound.

The series was created and written by Emmy Award nominee Shane Portman, illustrated by Andy Alves, colored by Sophia Du and Celia FitzGerald, lettered by Oceano Ransford, and with consultation from comics librarian Moni Barrette.


Shrub explores the various ways that we allow grief to take root, inspired by writer Shane Portman’s experience with the loss of his father. The series features “Letting Grief Take Root” essays written by individuals with a personal and/or professional connection to grief who relate Shrub’s story to their own lived experience. Essayists include Shane Portman and his family, as well as grief doula Kat Primeau and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Ariel Landrum (Geek Therapy).

Additionally, every issue of the series includes a fold-out page within the story’s narrative.

Striving to destigmatize loss and promote understanding of the diverse ways that people of all ages grieve, the expanded print edition will also feature a study guide by literacy advocate Creators, Assemble! Inc., an informational essay by clinical psychologist and media consultant Dr. Drea Letamendi, and much more.

Ripple Effects Explores Life as a Superhero with an Invisible and Incurable Disease

Fanbase Press has announced a new addition to its publishing slate and its first foray into Graphic Medicine with Ripple Effects, a five-issue comic book series created, written, and colored by Jordan Hart, illustrated by Bruno Chiroleu, flatted by Shane Kadlecik, lettered by Oceano Ransford, and featuring cover art by Justin C. Harder.

Ripple Effects explores life as a superhero with an invisible and incurable disease. It’s like The Incredibles meets the dramedy, 50/50.

In a world that is no stranger to superheroes, George Gibson is invulnerable to physical harm but fights every day to stay alive. Suffering from an acute case of type 1 diabetes, his invincibility is offset by a defective pancreas that must be monitored and treated daily. This incurable disease makes George’s body both his greatest strength and his eternal weakness.  

The series is one near and dear to creator Jordan Hart who lives with an invisible and incurable blood-clotting disease called thrombophilia. 

In the announcement, Hart said:

40% of Americans have an incurable disease, some more lethal than others. A superhero who struggles with medical bills, weekly doctor visits, and the anxiety of depending on daily, erratic treatments seems well overdue.

What sets this series apart is a positive, person-first representation about life with a chronic disease . . . which just so happens to also include superhuman abilities. But, Ripple Effects isn’t just a story about a character with an incurable disease. It’s also a thrilling and relevant superhero tale that touches on the difficulty of finding a work/life balance, the class struggles and economic inequality experienced by many in our nation, and the desire to help others during trying times.

Issues #1-5 of the comic book series will be released digitally through ComiXology and Hoopla Digital starting in the summer of 2022. In addition, the series will be collected into a printed trade paperback following the digital release.  The Ripple Effects trade paperback is currently available for pre-order through the Fanbase Press website. Pre-orders made by August 1, 2022, will receive an exclusive print illustrated and signed by series creator Jordan Hart.

Fanbase Press Reimagines ’80s Nostalgia with The Sequels

Fanbase Press has announced the newest addition to its publishing slate with The Sequels, a four-issue, creator-owned comic book series written by Norm Harper illustrated by Val Halvorson and Harvey Award-nominated Bobby Timony, colored/flatted by Deanna Poppe, lettered by Oceano Ransford, and featuring cover art by Don Aguillo.

In the height of 1980s nostalgia, The Sequels questions whether our grasp on the past is endangering our future:

Remember the ‘80s? Avery, Gwen, Russell, and Dakota will never forget.  As children, they each experienced unique adventures . . . saving the life of a sentient robot, partying with an intergalactic alien, battling the likes of vampires and werewolves, and defeating a nightmarish monster to protect imagination itself.  Now, 30 years later, they’re directionless adults, still obsessed with their pasts. When a mysterious figure brings the group together to cope with their experiences, will they be prepared to live out the “sequels” to their childhood adventures?

The series juxtaposes its modern-day characters with their ‘80s selves, as depicted by artists Halvorson and Timony, respectively.

Issues #1-4 of the comic book series will be released digitally through ComiXology starting in February 2019. In addition, the series will be collected into a printed trade paperback that will be released in July 2019.  The Sequels trade paperback is currently available for pre-order through the Fanbase Press website. Pre-orders made by May 1, 2019, will receive an exclusive set of prints (representing each of the four covers) illustrated by Don Aguillo and signed by the entire creative team.
