Nullhunter #1 feels like a B-movie with some solid potential

Nullhunter #1

Clay is a war hero who faces unspeakable tragedy after returning home. Seeking justice, he’s forced into service for his estranged father’s powerful company, OLYMP0S. His first mission takes him to faraway N3M-3A on the trail of a hijacked shipment of war lions. Nullhunter #1 is an interesting debut that feels like a campy sci-fi B-movie in some ways but also some intriguing social commentary underneath.

Written by Michael Walsh, Nullhunter #1 kicks off with a former soldier suffering what seems like PTSD only to discover he’s murdered those around him. He’s punished but soon fines freedom in the service of OLYMP0S, a shady corporation. Walsh teases a lot when it comes to OLYMP0S and out of everything, this is the most interesting aspect of Nullhunter #1. While Clay is told his tech was hacked which caused him to murder his family, it’s teased this might just be a shitty corporation manipulating him to do their bidding.

No matter, Nullhunter #1 will turn into a story of revenge either way. Either Clay gets revenge against those who hacked his tech and turned him into a murderer or he finds out the truth of what I think is reality and turns and gets revenge against those that used him. Whichever that is, the comic promises violence, action, and crazy tech in a sci-fi world.

The art by Gustaffo Vargas helps with the B-movie feel delivering a style that has a pop sense about it. With lettering by Becca Carey and work by flatter Laura Dragon, the comic looks like it should have black light enhanced colors that would make the crazy page layouts pop. The comic feels visually like an indie style inspired by comics from the 70s in some ways and it’s a cool look. It sucks you in with a world that visually both looks like it’s put together and a bit rundown.

Nullhunter #1 shows a lot of potential. At its heart its a sci-fi tale of revenge. But, there could be more to it lurking just underneath the surface. With some nice visuals, it’s one for those who enjoy a pop sci-fi adventure.

Image Comics has revealed a sneak peek at October’s Nullhunter #1 by Eisner Award-winning creator Michael Walsh and rising star artist Gustaffo Vargas. This inside look at Nullhunter #1 shows war hero Clay’s bloody battle against a cyberpunk Nemean lion in his first Herculean labor, leaving readers wondering who will win this vicious fight. Issue #1 kicks off a brand-new sci-fi epic that not only reimagines classic Greek mythology, but also dives into a dark cyberpunk world in the same vein as fan-favorites like Frank Miller’s Ronin and Blade Runner.

In Nullhunter, war hero Clay faces unspeakable tragedy after returning home from battle. While seeking justice, he’s forced into service for his estranged father’s powerful company, OLYMP0S. His first mission takes him to faraway N3M-3A on the trail of a hijacked shipment of war lions. In seeking exoneration, this quest of twelve near-impossible labors will lead Clay to the very edges of space as he discovers the true source of evil in the cosmos.
