X-Men Krakoa Era Reading Guide Part 3

Welcome to part 3 of Graphic Policy‘s (mostly) comprehensive reading guide for the X-Men’s Krakoan Era, if you missed part 1 here’s the link and here’s the link to part 2. Last time we covered Reign of X, The Hellfire Gala, The Trial Of Magneto, and Inferno. This time we’re covering X Lives/X Deaths Of Wolverine, Destiny Of X, A.X.E.: Judgment Day, Dark Web and finally Sins Of Sinister.

Now I’m going to repeat myself a bit (again) and talk again about the Marvel Unlimited App. Marvel Unlimited is a subscription service that gives you access to virtually the entire back catalog of Marvel Comics with new comics added around three months after publication. like I said last time, Marvel Unlimited was an invaluable resource for me while reading through the Krakoan Era of X-Men and I can’t recommend it enough.

Without further ado let’s read some comics!

X LIVES/X DEATHS OF WOLVERINE

X LIVES/X DEATHS OF WOLVERINE

“Time’s sideways and time’s forwards. Time’s backwards and upside down.”

X Lives Of Wolverine is a time hopping odyssey through the messy and often contradictory history of Wolverine. Meanwhile X Deaths Of Wolverine follows the recently depowered Moira MacTaggert as she goes on the run from Krakoa and a mysterious techno-organic Wolverine!

Reading order:

  • X Lives of Wolverine #1
  • X Deaths of Wolverine #1

DESTINY OF X

DESTINY OF X

“I think we need to be on the same side”

Coming off the heels of X Lives/X Deaths the line relaunches with several new titles such as the political thriller Immortal X-Men by Kieron Gillen, X-Men Red a exploration of Arrako by Al Ewing, the sequel to Way Of X, Legion Of X, the surprising critique of carceral system Sabertooth by Victor LaValle, The new iteration of Marauders by Steve Orlando, and the penultimate installment in Tini Howard’s Betsy Braddock saga Knights Of X. All of these stand alongside the continuing titles X-Force and Wolverine by Benjamin Percy, and the flagship of the line Gerry Duggan’s X-Men.

*Marvel’s Voices Infinity Comic is our first Infinity Comic, a type of scrolling comic hosted on marvel unlimited (see told you it was important). It’s not mandatory and pretty skippable but it’s good and sets up a romantic love interest for Iceman that you’ll see in the future. Another Infinity comic is X-Men Unlimited which largely offers slice of life stories on Krakoa, it only really becomes plot relevant during the Fall Of X.

A.X.E.: JUDGEMENT DAY

A.X.E.: JUDGEMENT DAY

“You have 24 hours to justify yourselves”

Two tribes go to war! It’s X-Men vs Eternals with the Avengers caught in-between. The threads from Gillen’s Eternals run and Immortal X-Men collide in this giant-sized event! A.X.E: Judgment Day is perhaps the largest event in this series of reading guides. We’re keeping our reading guide for this event to the main stuff which luckily is mostly X-Men.

Reading order:

  • Eternals #1-6*
  • Eternals: Thanos Rises #1*
  • Eternals: Celestia #1*

*While not a part of A.X.E.: Judgment Day proper these issues comprise Kieron Gillen’s run on Eternals. It’s essential to understanding Judgment Day which is in all honesty the second part of the Gillen Eternals’s run.

DESTINY OF X PART 2

DESTINY OF X PART 2

“Governments ask you to build terrible things. It’s up to the scientists to weigh what’s worse… having that new toy… or not having it”

After the massive event that was A.X.E: Judgment Day we return to our regularly scheduled programming. Here both Steve Orlando’s Marauders and Vita Ayala’s New Mutants. On the flip side we get the Gleefully Transgressive mini-series X-Terminators by Leah Williams, a Firestar centric story in X-Men Annual by Steve Orlando, and what’s in my opinion the best arc of Gerry Duggan’s X-Men.

Reading order:

  • Marauders #7-12
  • New Mutants #25-30
  • X-Terminators #1-5
  • X-Men Annual (2022) #1
  • X-Men #15-18

DARK WEB

DARK WEB

“A nothing person! In a nowhere place!”

Another event! Dark Web is primarily a crossover between Zeb Well’s Amazing Spider-Man and X-Men. There are a few other titles involved in the event but were keeping it strictly need to know and X-centric. Spider-Man’s clone Ben Reilly has turned evil and has teamed up with the X-Men’s resident evil clone Madelyne Pryor! Together they conspire to takeover New York and take back what was stolen from them!

Reading order:

  • The Amazing Spider-Man #14
  • Dark Web #1
  • Dark Web: X-Men #1
  • Venom #14
  • Dark Web X-Men #2-3
  • Dark Web Final #1

DESTINY OF X PART 3

DESTINY OF X PART 3

“Survival of the fittest.”

This one is a real grab bag of stuff. In X-Men the titular team is off fighting the brood, Deadpool by Alyssia Wong is a not so subtle love story, Victor LaValle explores the history of medical malpractice of minorities in Sabertooth and the Exiles of all places, Charlie Jane Anders introduces a new young mutant Escapade, Tini Howard wraps up her Betsy Braddock saga in Betsy Braddock: Captain Britan, and finally something sinister is brewing.

Reading order:

  • X-Men #19-21
  • Deadpool #1-10
  • Sabretooth and the Exiles #1-5
  • Marvel’s Voices: Pride 2022 #1*
  • New Mutants #31-33
  • New Mutants: Lethal Legion #1-5
  • Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain #1-5
  • Immortal X-Men #8
  • X-Men Red #8-10
  • Legion of X #7-10

*Like the year before it, Marvel’s Voices: Pride 2022 #1 introduces a brand new character who will be relevant for a at the time upcoming book, in this case the only story you need to worry about is “Permanent Sleepover”.

SINS OF SINISTER

SINS OF SINISTER

“To me, my me’s”

Mr. Sinister wins! Split between three time periods, year 10, year 100, and year 1,000 (à la HOXPOX), this alternate future event (à la Age Of Apocalypse) welcomes us to a entire universe cursed by the Sins Of Sinister! Immoral X-Men, Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants, and Nightcrawlers each are essentially continuations of Immortal X-Men, X-Men Red, and Legion of X respectively. Sins of Sinister is a interesting event that puts a spin on a X-Men classic, the dark future!

Reading order:

  • Immortal X-Men #9-10
  • Sins of Sinister #1
  • Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #1
  • Nightcrawlers #1
  • Immoral X-Men #1
  • Nightcrawlers #2
  • Immoral X-Men #2
  • Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #2
  • Immoral X-Men #3
  • Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #3
  • Nightcrawlers #3
  • Sins of Sinister: Dominion #1

And so we come to a close on the third part of our (mostly) comprehensive Krakoa Era reading guide. Before I said to come back and join us next time for the next installment but at the time of writing the next chapter in the Krakoan era, Fall Of X is still coming out. However once it’s all said and done we’ll come back to finish this series of reading guides off.

100 YEARS SINCE THE SINISTER ERA BEGAN… WAGNERINE and her gene-spliced assassins are HOLY THIEVES, servants to a cosmic cult. Let the HEIST LITURGY be spoken! Loot the ashes of Asgard! And let us bear witness to the final fate of the First…the fallen fiend who was once known as NIGHTCRAWLER.

Nightcrawlers #2

Nightcrawlers #2 is an interesting concept

Nightcrawlers #2

“Sins of Sinister” has taken a different approach to events. Instead of more linear narrative told across a main title with tie-ins, we get an opening comic, three main comics, and then a finale. But, those individual series is where it gets intriguing. Instead of a story told across a few issues, each group of issues takes place in a time period. The first is 10 years after Sinister’s plan takes place, the second 100 years, and the third 1,000 years. So, instead of a flowing narrative, each issue has felt like a one-shot teasing the world. Nightcrawlers #2 takes place 100 years from the beginning of the event’s story focusing on the gene spliced holy thieves.

Written by Si Spurrier, Nightcrawlers #2 feels like continues the the overall concept of the event. The Nightkin were freed from Sinister’s control in the first issue, now serving Mother Righteous. 100 years have gone by and things have gotten out of control once again.

Mother Righteous is up to something having her Nightkin stealing artifacts from across the cosmos. It’s become a cosmic cult, following whatever Righteous’ plan is. But as she’s “a Sinister,” you can only trust what is said so much. Instead cracks are formed as lies begin to pile up and Righteous’ control isn’t as tight as expected. From the Nightkin’s perspective, things also spiral as it’s clear things aren’t as righteous as presented to them. It’s a solid concept but one issue is far too short to explore it.

The art by Andrea Di Vito is interesting. With color by Jim Charalampidis and lettering by Clayton Cowles, there’s a need for the visuals to tell a lot of the story, and they do. Small details add to let the readers know where things stand and where the world is at this point. The way someone is dressed, the look they give at a moment, it all comes together to add a little more depth to what’s going on. The chimera aspect of the characters too is key, with the visuals hinting as to what’s going on and who they are. It all comes together in an entertaining enough way.

Nightcrawlers #2 isn’t bad, but the format for “Sins of Sinister” doesn’t help the ambition. Each issue has teased the world and narrative and each could have easily expanded delivering more of a flowing story. Instead, the event feels like numerous one-shots taking place in a shared world where we need to piece together the details. It’s an interesting concept and idea but there’s a lot here and a lot thrown at readers that’s good and deserves to be fleshed out and expanded upon.

Mini Reviews: Mosely, Danger Street, WildC.A.T.s, Nightcrawlers

WildC.A.T.s #4 cover

Sometimes, the staff at Graphic Policy read more comics than we’re able to get reviewed. When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling reviews of the comics, or graphic novels, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full one for.

These are Graphic Policy’s Mini Reviews and Recommendations.

Logan

Danger Street #3 (DC Comics)Danger Street is really starting to hit its stride as a homage to the 1970s DC series 1st Issue Special . It shares that comic’s focus on B and C list characters while bringing them together through the threat of cosmic destruction and a murder mystery. Plus corporations are trying to make money and wheel and deal. This book is turning into a showcase for Jorge Fornes and Dave Stewart‘s versatility as artists, and they turn on a dime going from the Kirby-esque psychedelia of the Source Wall to, well, 1940s Jack Kirby with the Danger Street Dingbats getting in scraps and looking for their friend’s murderer. Tom King and Fornes also bring a level of psychological depth that the 1970s comics didn’t have with the entire issue framed around Lady Cop (She hates that name though.) dealing with a malfunctioning printer at her work, and you can see the sadness and vulnerability in Starman and Warlord’s faces when a film studio treats them like IP and not people. Danger Street #3 feels both Biblical and slice of life, nostalgic and forward-thinking, and I look forward to seeing Tom King thread these disparate characters closer together. Overall: 8.4 Verdict: Buy

Mosely #2 (BOOM! Studios) – After a gut-wrenching, powerful first issue, Mosely takes a step back in this week’s issue, but only a small one. Writer Rob Guillory isn’t afraid to get cynical in this script which includes Luddite protagonist Mosely turning his ire towards his fellow humans while trying to take out the tech god that controls the virtual reality playground where humans spend most of their days. (And is also the new jail.) There’s an exhausted rhythm to Guillory’s captions, which is in contrast to the dynamism of Sam Lotfi and Jean-Francois Beulieu‘s visuals. The book is most compelling when it focuses on the relationship between Mosely and his daughter, who is very dialed into what’s going on with the tech gods, but they don’t get a lot of time together in this issue beyond a flashback scene. So, this issue is just a lot of smashing until Mosely literally passes out at the end. While the first issue was more misanthropic satirical, Mosely #2 reads more like a Donny Cates beat ’em up even though a funny, yet poignant smaller scale backup story written and drawn by Rob Guillory gives me hope for future issues. Overall: 6.1 Verdict: Pass

Brett

WildC.A.T.s #4 (DC Comics) – Just when you think the series can’t get any better, it surprises you. The issue mainly focuses on Grifter’s battle behind enemy lines as the rest of the team attempts to get approval to save him. It’s an interesting turn of an issue in that its main focus isn’t the action and danger but the actual characters and their relationship. For as dysfunctional as the team is, Matthew Rosenberg reminds us that they are a family in a way. It’s one that might not get along all of the time, fight, and generally want to slap each other, but they’re family and a team that watches out for each other. But, the bigger surprise is the depth Rosenberg gives Grifter. He’s always been a “cool” character, little in words and mostly in action, but here we get his thoughts as the situation gets more and more desperate. We find that there’s a real hero here and despite the cynicism on the surface, he’s really good underneath. Add in fantastic art by Stephen Segovia, Elmer Santos, and Ferran Delgado and you have an issue that defines who these characters are. Overall: 9.0 Verdict: Buy

Nightcrawlers #1 (Marvel)Sins of Sinister has been an interesting event showing a world that has gotten out of hand from even Sinister’s machinations. This new miniseries focuses on the Nightcrawlers, genetically spliced Nightcrawler with other heroes who are liberated for some reason. It’s a slice of story in the overall arc and doesn’t quite work on its own. It feels like a story that can’t quite fit in the main event series but also doesn’t quite stand on its own as well. Maybe as the issues play out it’ll work a bit better but as a debut issue, it falls a little short. Overall: 7.0 Verdict: Read

Well, there you have it, folks. The reviews we didn’t quite get a chance to write. See you next week!

Please note that with some of the above comics, Graphic Policy was provided FREE copies for review. Where we purchased the comics, you’ll see an asterisk (*). If you don’t see that, you can infer the comic was a review copy. In cases where we were provided a review copy and we also purchased the comic you’ll see two asterisks (**).

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

The Last Barbarians #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Betty: The Final Girl (Archie Comics/Archie Horror) – Archie Horror has been on point and entertaining, so we’re excited for this riff on the slasher genre.

Icon vs. Hardware #1 (DC Comics/Milestone) – The first “event” for the Milestone universe as “Worlds Collide”!

Investigators: Agents of SUIT Vol. 1 (First Second) – The main series this spins out of is a lot of fun. We’re hoping for more of the same with this graphic novel for younger readers.

Killchella #2 (Scout Comics) – The first issue nailed the start to a new slasher concept, one that takes place at a music festival. Will the kills live up to expectations?

The Last Barbarians #1 (Image Comics) – Sylv has a lot of skills…and she’ll need them all to survive this hero’s journey! It’s a new fantasy series that sounds like a quest to make some bank. We’re intrigued to see this as that cover is beautiful.

Masters of the Universe: Masterverse #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – To save the life of her champion, the Sorceress must take the Cosmic Enforcer on a tour of the multiverse! This sounds awesome!

Nemesis: Reloaded #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue surprised us in how on point it was with current societal topics. We want to see where it goes and what it might have to see underneath the over-the-top violence.

Nightcrawlers #1 (Marvel) – The next chapter of “Sins of Sinister” focuses on the hybrid Nightcrawlers.

Parker Girls #5 (Abstract Studios) – The series has been a lot of fun with a mix of action and laughs.

Spa (Fantagraphics) – It sounds like The Menu but in the selfcare space and we’re totally down for that!

Torrent #1 (Image Comics) – It’s a brand new superhero universe from Marc Guggenheim and Rico Renzi. Michelle Metcalf is the world’s most happy-go-lucky hero, Crackerjack, until tragedy forces her to cross the line from hero to vigilante.

WildC.A.T.s #4 (DC Comics) – Just a hell of a lot of fun with laughs, action, and drama. Such a great return of the characters and series!
