The Shredder’s quest takes him deep into the mountains of Japan, where he visits the temple of the Foot Mystics, an ancient sect that went dormant centuries ago. Shredder had hoped to leave their strange cult to history, but they may hold the key to defeating his powerful new enemy, the Mourner. The path is treacherous, and the Shredder will have to face more than the elements as he ascends to the secret Foot outpost.

The Shredder’s quest to find the rogue Foot soldier “the Mourner” takes him to Europe, where she is rumored to have procured some top-secret technology from a very distant place — Dimension X — to use in the mysterious device she’s constructing. For what purpose, only the Mourner knows for sure, but it’s one the Shredder is determined to undermine at all costs.

Oroku Sakai is back in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder #1

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder #1

As a dark new power rises from the shadows of New York, so does a much darker power return to the city’s streets…for revenge. One of the most terrifying villains in the history of comics is back—and more deadly than ever! Returned forever changed by a maddening ordeal beyond imagining, the Shredder is a man out of time, betrayed by all around him, without the Foot Clan, and quite possibly insane. When one of his former Foot prodigies forms their own rival clan with infernal designs on New York, a recovering Shredder must quest deep into the criminal underworld, where enemies both old and new will discover what defiance will bring them at the end of the Shredder’s blades. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder #1 sees the return of Oroku Sakai to the world of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Written by Dan Watters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder #1 is a good start, bringing a bit of mystery to the return of Shredder. It plays off ideas we’ve seen before where someone evil must be used to catch someone even worse. After mysteriously showing up, Sakai jacks up the individuals living in his old headquarters, with only one besting him. That group has been under surveillance and deemed a terrorist organization with designs on building a bomb. Sakai needs to stop them.

The art by Michele Bandini is good. With color by Marco Lesko and lettering by Darran Robinson, Sakai looks like a man broken and tired. A person who has seen some shit. Where the comic doesn’t quite hook is the action which isn’t the most dynamic. It’s good, but it isn’t anything that really stands out. But, overall the art looks good.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder #1 isn’t anything new overall, but feels new for this world and it’s done pretty well. While it doesn’t quite completely excite, it is an interesting chapter for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder arrives this Summer!

The first and most iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) villain, Oroku Saki aka Shredder, is making his terrifying return this summer and he wants one thing: revenge.

Prepare for the rags-to-revenge story of the ultimate ronin. Returned forever changed by a maddening ordeal beyond imagining, betrayed by all around him, and no longer with the Foot Clan, Shredder will quest deep into New York’s criminal underworld as a former protege has formed their own rival clan with sinister plans for the city. In his deadly mission for vengeance, enemies both old and new will brutally discover what defiance will bring them at the end of the Shredder’s blades.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder #1 is on sale Wednesday, August 13 with a pre-order deadline of Monday, July 7. In addition to Santolouco’s striking cover, the debut issue will also feature jaw-dropping variants by series artist Bandini, Kael Ngu, Dike Ruan, Stjepan Šejić, a black & white version of Ngu’s cover, a foil version of Santolouco’s cover, and a sketch variant.

Impossible Man wreaks havoc across the Marvel Universe in variant covers

Marvel Comics continues to celebrate the Fantastic Four this year with all-new Variant Cover programs! Following recent cover collections focused on the Thing, Human Torch, and Invisible Woman, a legendary Fantastic Four supervillain hogs the spotlight this May—the IMPOSSIBLE MAN! The impish prankster will star in 10 variant covers split into two categories: Impossible! Variant Covers and Impossible Pop-Up Variant Covers.

In the Impossible! Variant Covers, see surprising takes on classic Marvel imagery as Impossible Man unleashes his unique brand of chaos on Marvel history. The covers pay homage to John Byrne’s Uncanny X-Men #136, Todd McFarlane’s Amazing Spider-Man #300, and Adi Granov’s Invincible Iron Man #1 covers as well as John Romita Jr.’s Wonder Man pinup from Marvel Illustrated – The Swimsuit Issue and Jim Lee’s depiction of Psylocke from an iconic ‘90s X-Men trading card. Then, the Popuppian from the planet Poppup lives up to his species’ name in Impossible Pop-Up Variant Covers, which sees the Impossible Man take over the respective issue’s main cover.

This latest variant cover program arrives to celebrate the history of the Fantastic Four during a monumental year for Marvel’s First Family. In addition to the release of Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated The Fantastic Four: First Steps film on July 25, the Fantastic Four are undergoing major developments in “One World Under Doom,” a new comic event that kicked off last month, that will lead into an all-new era by writer Ryan North and artist Humberto Ramos in Fantastic Four #1 this July.
