TV Mini Review: Daredevil: Born Again S1E1

Daredevil: Born Again

Sometimes, the staff at Graphic Policy watches more tv than we’re able to get reviewed. When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling reviews of the comics, or graphic novels, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full one for.

These are Graphic Policy’s Mini Reviews and Recommendations.

Logan

Daredevil: Born Again S1E1 “Heaven’s Half Hour”– After a nostalgic intro featuring banter between Matt Murdock, Foggy Nelson, and Karen Page, writer/showrunner Dario Scardapane brings the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen’s world crashing down. He draws a throughline between gentrification and maybe Daredevil not fitting in this brave new world where Ben Urich’s niece is basically a TikTok reporter, Murdock goes on actual dates and attends client meetings, and of course, Wilson Fisk campaigns for the highest office in the city. Fisk and Murdock share a diner conversation scene where Vincent D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox continue to be positively electric, and the chat acts as a manifest for the upcoming season. “Heaven’s Half Hour” key weakness is its darkness and smoke shaded fight choreography in a pivotal action scene early in the episode, but I applaud some of the needle drops. Of course, Matt Murdock listens to Nick Cave in his apartment when he’s feeling sadness and guilt, and dissociating to TV on the Radio after a criminal wins an election is a big 2016/2024 mood.

Overall Verdict: 8.4

Vision gets a series as Paul Bettany returns and Star Trek: Picard’s Terry Matalas is tapped as Showrunner

Vision

Looks like we’ll finally find out what happened to Vision after WandaVision as a new series starring the Marvel character is in the works for Disney+. It’s set for 2026 and Paul Bettany will return for the role. Terry Matalas, who was an executive producer on Star Trek: Picard, will serve as the showrunner.

Vision has had a rough go in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character died at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. The character was resurrected by his beloved Wanda Maximoff in WandaVision. He was also rebuilt as a ghost white version with no memory of his part. The two versions battled it out at the end of the series with Wanda restoring the memory of the ghost white version and the one she resurrected to fade from existence. The show will presumably follow up on those events.

Kevin Feige Named Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer

Marvel logo

From the “House of Ideas” to the “House of Feige.”

Kevin Feige‘s influence within the Marvel world, and Disney, grows as he’s been named the company’s Chief Creative Officer. All of the company’s key creative executives across film and TV will now report to him.

In this role, Feige will be in charge of the creative direction for Marvel’s storytelling. That includes publishing, film, TV, and animation.

Dan Buckley, President of Marvel Entertainment (the comics and more) will report to Feige when it comes to creative/editorial decisions. When it comes to operations, sales, creative services, games, licensing, and events, Buckley will report to Ike Perlmutter who is Marvel’s Chairman. Joe Quesada is expected to remain as the creative lead for Marvel Entertainment and report to Buckley.

In another change, Marvel Television and Marvel Family Entertainment will move under the Marvel Studios banner which Feige runs. That change isn’t unexpected. During recent announcements at San Diego Comic-Con and D23 the television shows, which one would have expected to be under Marvel TV, showed the Marvel Studios banner. This lead to speculation that live-action storytelling as a whole was falling more under Feige’s control.

Fiege will continue to report to Walt Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn and co-chairman Alan Berman.
