Mark Smylie Leaving Archaia

PrintIn June 2013, BOOM! Studios acquired Archaia, bringing the company into BOOM!’s growing lines of comics. Part of that deal was a melding of staff, including Mark Smylie, Archaia’s Founder, Publisher, and Chief Creative Officer. Yesterday, BOOM! announced that Smylie would be “transitioning away from the company he founded.”

Smylie will instead focus on his burgeoning writing career among other creative endeavors. Last year saw Smylie’s debut as a novelist with The Barrow from publisher Pyr (an imprint of Prometheus Books). Set in the world of Artesia, the book garnered praise.

In the release Smylie said:

I’m excited by this next stage. I continue to love comics and publishing, and am thrilled to see titles we had worked on acquiring for Archaia hitting shelves this year, including Asaf Hanuka’s The Realist, the upcoming Freaks’ Squeele from the amazing French artist Florent Maudoux, and the hardcover collection of The Last Broadcast from André Sirangelo and Gabriel Iumazark, which former Archaia editor Rebecca Taylor had found and shepherded, beginning almost five years ago. But getting a chance to return to the setting and characters of Artesia in writing The Barrow was a welcome shift, and reminded me of why I had started all this to begin with.

ArchaiaThe Barrow’s success will see a sequel, Black Heart, scheduled this November from Pyr.

While at Archaia and during the past two years at BOOM!, Smylie has also been working as a producer, assembling a slate of lower-budgeted features around Archaia back-catalog titles such as Killing Pickman, Black Fire, Black Charity, Starkweather, The Grave Doug Freshley, and Mumbai Confidential, with those efforts now spun off in a separate company, Aegis & Gorgon.

Mark Smylie founded Archaia Studios Press in 2002 as a home for his previously published creator-owned series Artesia. In 2006, he announced he was venturing into publishing third-party material that he did not create, leading to the launch of the long-running Mouse Guard series from David Petersen and the English-language translations of French best-selling series The Killer by Matz and Luc Jacamon.

In 2008, Smylie sold the company and stayed on as an acting principal. In 2009, the publisher was relaunched simply as “Archaia,” going on to win Eisner Awards for the best-selling Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand and The Return of the Dapper Men.

Smylie continued in the release:

It’s been a labor of love helping these creators try to realize their work on-screen. They’re rich creative worlds and stories with what I think is great potential. We’ve always approached the comics-to-film market from a couple of perspectives, both the traditional option/studio-sale model and the indie-financing model, and the indie side was the part that interested me most. Thankfully, when BOOM! came in, [Founder and CEO] Ross [Richie] and the rest of the team continued to encourage my work on the internal development line. I’m excited to be able to dedicate more time to pursue these projects, and getting them past the development stage and into production—as challenging as I know that will be.

‘Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard’ Vol. 1 Sells Out!

Official Press Release

‘MOUSE GUARD: LEGENDS OF THE GUARD’ SELLS OUT, NEW PRINTING BEING RUSHED TO RETAILERS

ANTHOLOGY COLLECTION FEATURING CONTRIBUTIONS BY CREATORS HANDPICKED BY DAVID PETERSEN IS A HIT WITH FANS OF ALL AGES

Los Angeles, CA (November 23, 2010) – Fresh on the heels of news that one of its publications, RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN, sold out of its initial run of 10,000 copies at the distributor level in just 24 hours, Archaia is proud to announce that the MOUSE GUARD: LEGENDS OF THE GUARD VOL. 1 collected edition hardcover has sold out of its initial run of 15,000 copies within the first two days of its availability!

The latest MOUSE GUARD hardcover has charmed critics and readers alike with its eclectic mix of storytelling and art styles, all set in David Petersen’s wonderful world of mice with swords. A second printing is being rushed and will arrive in stores in time for the holidays.

“Archaia and I put a lot of thought into how we would want to make and present a MOUSE GUARD anthology,” said Petersen. “After seeing the contributors execute their stories so well and seeing the final book layout and design, I am very happy the public agreed with our choices and rallied behind this book enough to have us sell out of a first printing so quickly! It gets me very excited for what we will have in store with LEGENDS OF THE GUARD VOL. 2.”

While MOUSE GUARD: LEGENDS OF THE GUARD VOL. 1 is currently sold out at the distributor level, copies are still available at local and online retailers wherever books are sold. Be sure to pick up or order your copy today! To order a copy, use ISBN code 978193238694-3.

MOUSE GUARD: LEGENDS OF THE GUARD (hardcover, full color, 144 pages, 8” x 8”, $19.95), is set inside the June Alley Inn, located in the western mouse city of Barkstone. Mice have gathered to tell tales, each trying to outdo the other. A competition, of sorts, begins. The rules: Every story must contain one truth, one lie, and have never been told in that tavern before. Petersen writes and draws the scenes in the inn while the contributors he selected write and draw the tales. The contributors include Jeremy Bastian, Katie Cook, Guy Davis, Lowell Francis, Gene Ha, Alex Kain, Karl Kerschl, João Lemos, Terry Moore, Ted Naifeh, Craig Rousseau, Sean Rubin, Alex Sheikman and Mark Smylie.

MOUSE GUARD is the fan-favorite, Eisner Award-winning property created by David Petersen that chronicles the adventures of an elite group of mice that have been tasked with protecting common mice from predators, the elements and other dangers. It is, essentially, mice with swords! Two series, MOUSE GUARD VOL. 1: FALL 1152 and MOUSE GUARD VOL. 2: WINTER 1152, have been collected into hardcovers thus far. The first issue of the follow-up series, MOUSE GUARD VOL. 3: THE BLACK AXE, launches in December. Petersen and Archaia have also already announced a LEGENDS OF THE GUARD VOL. 2 collection is planned, with creators like Eric Canete, Janet Lee, Jim McCann, Kenneth Rocafort, Stan Sakai and Bill Willingham on board.

‘Return of the Dapper Men’ Pin-up Artists Revealed

Official Press Release

ALL-STAR ARTISTS GO ‘DAPPER’

‘RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN’ TO FEATURE AN ALL-STAR PIN-UP GALLERY

Los Angeles, CA (September 14, 2010) – As the buzz for the upcoming Archaia original graphic novel RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN continues to grow, so does the roster of Dapper men and women who are contributing to the book Examiner.com has called “groundbreaking” and iFanboy.com says is “shaping up to be the ‘it-book’ of New York Comic Con.”

In addition to award-winning designer Todd Klein providing the cover and interior design work, an incredible array of artists have put on their best bowler hats and pinstripes to create a remarkable gallery of pin-ups that will be appearing in the book. From some of today’s hottest comic book and graphic artists comes a variety of takes on the incredible world and characters of RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN (hardcover, full color, 128 pages, 9.5” x 11”, $24.95), created from the minds of Jim McCann (Hawkeye & Mockingbird) and acclaimed visual artist Janet Lee.

The full list of contributors to the 12 pin-ups featured in the book is as follows:

Adrian Alphona and Christina Strain
Joyce Chin
John Tyler Christopher

Katie Cookhttp://katiecandraw.typepad.com/
Colleen Cooverhttp://www.colleencoover.net/
David Mackhttp://www.davidmack.net/
Dave Perillohttp://montygog.blogspot.com/
Mike Perkinshttp://www.mikeperkinsart.com/
Evan Shanerhttp://www.evanshaner.com/
Mark Smyliehttp://www.archaia.com/blog/titles/artesia
Tom Whalenhttp://strongstufftom.blogspot.com/
Skottie Younghttp://www.skottieyoung.com/

“The fact that this many people wanted to and agreed to provide their own vision of a world that has existed for so long only in our minds was mind-blowing,” says the book’s author, Jim McCann. “The sheer volume of talent and the spectrum of the way each artist approached the work has been overwhelming and exciting to watch.”

Here is what some of the all-star contributors had to say about their experience, the art and the story of RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN:

Return of the Dapper Men has a fun, unique story mixed with fairy tale-like artwork that makes this a graphic novel unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s a treat for the reader and sure to be a book that you keep coming back to for another read!” – Katie Cook (Fraggle Rock)

“Jim McCann has let his imagination run free with Return of the Dapper Men and it’s turned into a soaring, joyful parkour of a run. Ably abetted by the absolutely wonderful illustrations by Janet Lee, this book is a remarkable achievement.” – Mike Perkins (The Stand)

“I’m just happy Jim let me draw his characters! I was instantly in love with Janet’s art and designs to begin with. And Jim’s concept alone is just inspiring!” – Adrian Alphona (Runaways)

“After I agreed to contribute a pinup for Return of the Dapper Men, I was given a rather large folder of wordless comic pages to peruse and see what caught my eye. While all of Janet’s character designs would have been fun to interpret, the clockwork angel called out the loudest. A blend of robot and human forms with Victorian sensibilities (holding roman numerals—perfect design elements!), I couldn’t resist taking a stab at envisioning her in my style. I hope I did Janet and Jim proud!” – Tom Whalen (Illustrator, WIRED)

“I was super excited to do a pin-up for the book; such a beautiful story and art. I found a lot of Magritte-esque inspiration from it, so I really tried to incorporate that into my design.” – Dave Perillo (Illustrator, Disney TV Animation)

“I really fell in love with Zoe. Janet’s design was so cute and innocent, I wanted to explore the character in my style and see where I could take her. One of the things I greatly appreciated about the script was the thought put into every aspect. From the names, to philosophical concepts, to certain elements of numerology, I totally dug the subtle nature of everything. I wanted to incorporate this ideology into the piece. I’d can’t wait to read this with my daughter.” – John Tyler Christopher (Witchblade)

A visual tour de force, RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN is the debut graphic novel from the minds of award-winning writer Jim McCann (Hawkeye & Mockingbird) and critically acclaimed gallery artist Janet Lee. A modern twist on classic fairy tales, this is a story about growing up, childhood fears and examining the origins of a world and the things that inhabit it. The incredible decoupage art style combines steampunk fantasy and science fiction with Art Nouveau for a truly unique and groundbreaking book, all sharply dressed in a pinstripe suit and a dapper bowler hat. RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN will have a limited number of copies available at New York Comic Con, October 8-10 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York, and will be available wherever books are sold in November. To pre-order a copy, use ISBN code 978-1932386905.
