A Haunted Girl explores real world mental health topics through a horror lens in May

Co-writers and father-daughter team Ethan Sacks and Naomi Sacks join forces with fan-favorite artist Marco Lorenzana for a YA graphic novel that explores real-world mental health struggles through a fantastical lens in the upcoming, A Haunted Girl. It will hit shelves this May from Image Comics.

The graphic novel will also contain an AFSP guide to suicide prevention resources, as well as a guide from the American Psychiatric Association (APA) on free therapy access options. Both organizations contributed sensitivity reading to ensure the depictions of mental health were authentic.

In A Haunted Girl, readers meet Cleo, a 16-year-old adopted Japanese-American whose anxiety and depression drives her to suicidal thoughts, is fresh out of the hospital and trying unsuccessfully to reintegrate back into her old life. What she doesn’t know is that her real struggles are just beginning as she finds herself encountering an increasingly terrifying succession of ghosts. Is she losing her grip on reality… or is the explanation much, much worse? A Haunted Girl channels terrors—both otherworldly and real-life—that come with anxiety and depression.

A Haunted Girl (ISBN: 978-1534397774) will be in 6×9 paperback format and available at local comic book shops on Wednesday, May 22 and independent bookstores, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, and Indigo on Tuesday, May 21.

Coming this fall from Image Comics’ imprint, Syzygy Publishing, is a gripping new four-issue horror series, A Haunted Girl. Co-written by the father-daughter team of Ethan Sacks and Naomi Sacks, with art by Marco Lorenzana, this paranormal thriller channels terrors both otherworldly as well as the real-life terror that comes with struggles of anxiety and depression. 

Cleo, a 16-year-old adopted Japanese-American whose anxiety and depression drives her to suicidal thoughts, is fresh out of the hospital and trying unsuccessfully to reintegrate back into her old life. What she doesn’t know is that her struggles are just beginning as she finds herself encountering an increasingly terrifying succession of ghosts. Is she losing her grip on reality… or is the explanation much, much worse?

The story was developed four years ago while Ethan’s daughter was hospitalized. He is now able to write the series with Naomi who describes it as “very personal” and sees Cleo as going through “a lot of the same struggles” she did.

An inspiration to those battling their own demons, A Haunted Girl #1 hits stores October 11.

Magma Comix and Heavy Metal Announce Intrusion from Ethan Sacks and Marco Lorenzana

Intrusion is a parable about the consequences of misguided prejudice and hate. The new one-shot comic is coming from writer/co-creator Ethan Sacks, artist/co-creator Marco Lorenzana, colorist Erick Arciniega, and letterer Jaime Martinez. It features a cover by Daniel Govar and a variant cover by Marco Lorenzana. Coming from Heavy Metal imprint Magma Comix, the horror comic comes to comic shelves on September 22, 2021.

Set deep in the Louisiana bayou in the late 1760s, INTRUSION tells the story of the Broussard family, Acadians seeking a new life after being cast out of Canada by the British and having lived the last several years in indentured servitude. They arrive in Louisiana desperate for a second chance. Settling on a patch of remote land bordered by a “cursed” swamp, Jacques will do anything to defend his family’s homestead…even if that puts them on a collision course with a creature that dwells in the bayou. Conceived as a one-shot horror comic from creators Ethan Sacks and Marco Lorenzana, the story makes use of the flipbook format in an innovative way to tell the story from two very different perspectives—the human and the monster. Aspen Comics Debuts Awaken Skies #0 this June

Aspen Comics is celebrating fifteen years of publishing in 2018, and the publisher will be releasing several all-new properties in addition to bringing back classic series from their library of titles. Aspen Comics has announced their final wave of new releases for their 15-Year Anniversary campaign. The Aspen Wave 3 titles follow the publisher’s anniversary year pattern of bringing back classic series such as their top selling Michael Turner’s Fathom and Executive Assistant: Iris while debuting new properties throughout 2018. Wave 3 kicks off with Aspen’s flagship title, Michael Turner’s Soulfire:

Aspen’s supernatural action-adventure series Dellec returns for a second volume in September following the character’s recent appearance in the Aspen series No World. Created and written by Frank Mastromauro and Vince Hernandez, the publisher will release more details soon.

October:

Artifact One, a brand new action-adventure series from creators/writers Vince Hernandez and J.T. Krul and illustrated by Romina Moranelli, debuts in October with a zero issue available on August 22nd. Aspen will release official solicitation copy and more details soon.

November:

The hit 2017 series No World returns for a second volume in November from writers Scott Lobdell and Blake Northcott with art by Giuseppe Cafaro. The No World title unites many of Aspen’s most popular characters in one action-adventure series with a rotating cast each volume.
