Ignition Press Expands its Team with New Hires

Following ComicsPRO’s Annual Industry Meeting and in preparation for its debut later this year, Ignition Press has announced that they have expanded their team with several key hires. Maggie Howell has joined the company as Senior Editor and Bre Sarpy has joined as Director of Marketing, following the addition of Executive Assistant, Zelio Pereira, last year.

Maggie Howell joined Ignition Press as Senior Editor in early January and in her new role will oversee and build the publisher’s new editorial department, alongside Editor-in-Chief Jamie S. Rich, as well as edit numerous of the publisher’s upcoming original projects. Howell brings to the company a decade of editing experience at DC Comics and IDW Publishing. She was a core member of the editorial team behind the DC Black Label and Vertigo imprints, including the Hill House Comics and Sandman Universe lines, and Sean Murphy’s New York Times best-selling Batman: White Knight Universe. Most recently, at IDW, Howell co-edited the 2024 TMNT relaunch, spearheaded the upcoming imprint IDW Dark, and was a key architect in the company’s creator-owned initiative, editing several titles to commercial and critical success, including Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, Earthdivers, and The Hunger and the Dusk.

Bre Sarpy joins Ignition Press as Director of Marketing this week and in her new role will oversee and build the publisher’s new marketing department, alongside Publisher Filip Sablik, as well as the publisher’s creator-driven, multi-channel marketing initiatives. Sarpy started her career at BOOM! Studios seven years ago followed by a stint at Skybound Entertainment, where she worked on projects including BRZRKR, Something is Killing the Children, The Walking Dead, and Invincible. She returns to the industry after working for Team Click, a marketing and PR agency, where she contributed to theatrical and home entertainment campaigns as well as D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. With experience in overseeing live events, digital marketing, digital and print advertising in the industry along with production management and campaign strategy for home entertainment and theatrical releases in film, Sarpy brings a versatile marketing skillset to the Ignition Press team.

Howell and Sarpy are the latest hires for Ignition Press after the company added Zelio Pereira as Executive Assistant last year. A graduate of the University of Arizona, Pereira was previously Editorial Assistant at BOOM! Studios.

Ignition Press was co-founded by publishing and media industry veterans Eric Gitter (CEO), Filip Sablik (Publisher), Jamie S. Rich (Editor-in-Chief), and Jeremy Haun (Creative Director) in July 2024 and will exclusively publish creator-driven original series beginning in mid-2025.

Maggie Howell Appointed Senior Editor of Original Content as Megan Brown Joins the Originals Team for IDW Publishing

IDW Publishing has announced the expansion of its Editorial department to include Maggie Howell as Senior Editor of Original Content. IDW editor Megan Brown will also be joining the Originals team, focusing on Middle Grade and Young Adult content.

Maggie Howell joins IDW after five years at DC Comics, where she focused exclusively on mature-reader originals and standalone evergreen superhero titles as a Vertigo and Black Label editor. She worked on several Eisner Award-winning and nominated series, including Mister Miracle and Far Sector, and managed the expansion of the Batman: White Knight universe. Howell also helped develop and launch multiple lines and imprints spearheaded by Mark Doyle, including Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman Universe and Joe Hill’s Hill House Comics.

Prior to joining the Originals team, Megan Brown worked with IDW as an Editor for two years, helping shape new directions for licensed comics including My Little Pony, Marvel Action: Captain MarvelStar Trek, and more.

Review: American Carnage #1

American Carnage #1

Hate is one of those things that human beings have felt since the beginning of time. What has changed as of recent is that certain types of hate have become more acceptable. What was abhorred only a few years ago has been encouraged by certain people in power. The 2016 election and what has happened since has shown that America has not made any real progress from the founding of our country.

Certain hate groups have found themselves to be not so much “true” villains anymore. Morals have truly become divided along party lines.  Which brings me to question would someone or anyone who believes in hate be considered a “good person”? In the debut issue of brilliantly crafted American Carnage, writer Bryan Edward Hill and the creative team seeks to explore those lines of divide as an FBI agent goes undercover in a Neo Nazi group.

We open on FBI Agent Curry where she is testifying before an ethics board on the incident which led to her injuries. We soon find out a Neo-Nazi group terrorized a family Curry had befriended as the domestic terrorists firebombed their home with them in it. We also meet a former FBI Agent, Richard Wright, who now works as a private detective. Curry tries to convince Wright that there is something more sinister to a local politician. While it might seem on the surface nothing is there there’s clearly something brewing.

Overall, an excellent debut issue that drops you into a world that is unfortunately way too familiar. The story by Hill is excellent. The art by the creative team is beautiful. Altogether, a sobering looks at the ugliness hiding in plain sight.

Review and Unboxing: Border Town #1

It’s Wednesday which means it’s new comic book day with new releases hitting shelves, both physical and digital, all across the world.

We previously reviewed Border Town #1 after San Diego Comic Con but DC Comics sent us this mysterious package. We open it up and once again give our thoughts about this new Vertigo series!

When a crack in the border between worlds releases an army of monsters from Mexican folklore into the small town of Devil’s Fork, Arizona, the residents blame the ensuing weirdness—the shared nightmares, the otherworldly radio transmissions, the mysterious goat mutilations—on “God-dang illegals.” With racial tensions supernaturally charged, it’s up to new kid in town Frank Dominguez and a motley crew of high school misfits to discover what’s REALLY going on.

Border Town #1 is by Eric M. Esquivel, Ramon Villalobos, Tamra Bonvillain, Deron Bennett, Andy Khouri, and Maggie Howell.
