Archie vs. The Terminator #1 kicks off the crossover we never knew we wanted

Archie vs. The Terminator #1

When a teenage John Connor enrolls at Riverdale High, Archie and the gang soon find themselves in the crosshairs of a Terminator! Archie vs. The Terminator #1 is a fantastic start delivering a debut that mixes Archie’s wholesomeness with the world of the Terminator.

When it comes to crossovers, Archie has pulled off some of the craziest but also some of the best. Archie has met the Punisher, Predator, Evil Dead, and now the Terminator. And, it works and works really well. Written by Rory McConville, Archie vs. The Terminator #1 keeps things rather simple. John Connor and his mother have moved to Riverdale to hide out while using alternate names. It’s an attempt at a simpler and safer life, where a Terminator can’t find them… but of course one will.

Where McConville’s debut issue really works is that it keeps it an Archie comic. There’s a wholesomeness about each moment and it doesn’t try to change things up or change up John Connor. That’s part of what makes the comic great. John and his mother Sarah make observations about how disconnected from reality Riverdale is, with no idea the danger that’s out there and they don’t mean Terminators. The Connors point out that Riverdale’s issues are quaint. It’s about mundane and small things that really have no major impact in one’s life. Compare that to not what the Connors are going through, but the world as a whole. It’s a small observation that doesn’t make fun of Archie and the gang but points out how disconnected from reality they are.

The art by Steven Butler and Lily Butler with lettering by Jack Morelli is solid. The comic keeps the Archie look and attempts to make John, Sarah, and the eventual Terminator more like Archie’s world than have them stand out. It’d be easy to go moody with John but the comic’s style feels like it takes his T2 style but dials it down a little to work in Archie’s world. The comic also doesn’t censor itself with a gun making its way into the story, showing this is one that could get rather violent. Add in an opening that teases the fate of some of Riverdale and you have a comic that’s both set in Archie’s visual style but not letting that wholesomeness hold it back.

Archie vs. The Terminator #1 does rely a bit on knowledge of the Terminator. It doesn’t take time to explain who John or Sarah Connor are, so those new to that franchise might be a bit lost. There’s clear history there that you might need to know to really enjoy the first issue. But, overall, it’s another solid crossover from a franchise that is known for it’s strange crossovers that work.

Riverdale better watch out, because all manner of chaos is about to kick off when a teenage John Connor enrolls at the local high school, as Dynamite Entertainment, Archie Comics, and Studiocanal present Archie vs. The Terminator starting this fall as a new 5-issue comic book miniseries!

The crossover no one saw coming is here! Archie and the gang have crossed paths with so many icons over their 85 years of history, while The Terminator has set its sights on all manner of victims. This fun-filled mashup is coming in hot for fans starting this October with the historic first meeting of pop culture powerhouses. Who will survive to tell the tale?

Writer Rory McConville continues his critically acclaimed tales of The Terminator here in unexpected fashion, following his series The Terminator: Metal. The star scribe of Spawn and Red Sonja brings the eye for action and science fiction twists to this fabled meeting.

Tackling the pulse-pounding pages inside the book is a heartwarming duo of Steven and Lily Butler. Longtime comics fans will know Butler for his beloved tenure on Spider-Man titles in the 1990s. His bibliography with Archie is deep, especially contributing to their Sonic the Hedgehog titles for years. In 1999 that same series publicly announced the birth of his daughter Lily. Now years later, the father and daughter duo are frequent artistic collaborators and in this series are set to balance the iconic house style of Riverdale with the threatening metal visage of The Terminator!

Complementing the thrilling showdown inside the series, each issue of Archie vs. The Terminator features covers by a range of familiar favorites to both Dynamite and Archie readers including Francesco Francavilla, Robert Hack, Björn Barends, and Bill Galvan. Fans can also get a mystery blind bag on the premiere issue, packed with limited editions selected randomly from a range of stunning variants.

This series follows the fan-favorite Archie X Army of Darkness crossover, which marked the first in a new era of continuing crossovers and collaborations between Dynamite Entertainment and Archie Comics. Even more details are to be announced soon!

Sabrina’s new Big Bad debuts in a three-part crossover!

Sabrina the Teenage Witch’s rogues gallery is going big with a brand new villain in September! Fan-favorite baddies Amber, Jade, and Sapphire — known as The Wicked Trinity — will conjure up Mother Striga in the pages of Sabrina Annual Spectacular, a one-shot comic book kicking off a rare three-part crossover from Archie Comics written by Ian Flynn with art by Steven and Lily Butler.

As will be revealed in the series, Mother Striga is an esoteric witch from whom all other witches in Sabrina’s world descend. An ancient juggernaut of malefic power, she is summoned by Amber in an attempt to defeat Sabrina, her earthly adversary, once and for all. Born on the same day as Sabrina and unable to exist in the mortal realm simultaneously as a result, Amber wants to take her place — but the consequences of Amber’s actions set off a chain of events that can’t be contained in one comic. The story will continue in October with Archie Halloween Spectacular and conclude with Josie and the Pussycats Annual Spectacular in November.

Amber Nightstone’s first appearance in 2022 sold out instantly and went to a second printing. Sapphire Gill and Jade Kazane were introduced a year later, their respective water- and wind-based powers rounding out Amber’s fire-based magic to form the Wicked Trinity and adding a note of danger to Sabrina’s world that’s further amped by Mother Striga’s power. Sabrina, one of Archie’s most popular and globally recognized characters, was the star of a Netflix streaming series, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, as well as numerous stories for readers of all ages in Archie’s current ongoing monthly comics and digest magazines.

Sabrina Annual Spectacular releases September 4 in comic shops nationwide, with colors by Glenn Whitmore, letters by Jack Morelli, and a cover by Vincent Lovallo, Steven and Lily Butler, and Rosario “Tito” Peña.

A BRAND-NEW STORY kicks off this NEED FOR SPEED issue! A new racer tears up the road in Riverdale this April!

Riverdale’s teens push the pedal to the metal in April when Archie Comics welcomes new character Daisy Thunder to town! Daisy, an ace racer from the rival gang Southside Serpents, gives Archie a run for his money in a new story by writer Craig Boldman and artist Steven Butler that kicks off Archie & Friends: Hot Rod Racing, a one-shot comic book collecting racing stories from throughout Archie history.

In Daisy’s debut, she challenges the core Archie cast to a race which Archie hopes to win with his famously run-down jalopy, now rebuilt as a hot rod for the job. And in true Archie Comics style, there’s drama off the track, as well, as the story hints at a complicated history between the characters.

That in-universe backstory will give Archie fans something to chew on as Daisy revs the engine in Hot Rod Racing and future appearances, adding a foil and rival for Archie much in the same way Cheryl Blossom stirred up the dynamic between Betty and Veronica when she was reintroduced in 1994’s “Love Showdown” storyline.

Archie & Friends: Hot Rod Racing releases April 3 in comic shops nationwide, with inks by Lily Butler, colors by Glenn Whitmore, lettering by Jack Morelli, and a cover by Steven and Lily Butler with colors by Rosario “Tito” Peña.
