Preview: Rat Queens Brings the Booze and Brawls in September

They’re not your typical band of high fantasy adventurers: Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, Dee the Atheist Human Cleric, and Betty the Hippy Hafling Thief. These women are the stars of the new Image Comics/Shadowline series Rat Queens, and they’re the deadliest grog-guzzling, death-dealing, battle-maidens-for-hire in Palisade.

In this new series by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Roc Upchurch, starting in September, the Rat Queens are taking on the quest of a lifetime… or at least the quest that’s going to get them out of the latest jam they’ve found themselves in: clearing out some pesky goblins from a cave. But these aren’t just any goblins, and Hindman Cave isn’t just any cave.

Wiebe described the project in an interview with IGN:

I suppose it’s obvious at this point that this is a love letter to my years of Dungeons and Dragons and fantasy but tweaked ever so slightly with a modern twist. Rat Queens is a title I’m super excited about. This is a series I’ve wanted to write for years but never felt quite ready to do it.

Wiebe met his collaborator on Rat Queens, Roc Upchurch at Comic-Con in 2011.

Upchuch adds:

A fantasy setting with female leads is pretty much the dream for me, so I’m having the time of my life with Rat Queens. Creating these characters was both fun and challenging. The girls have very different personalities, so I wanted them to have very distinct and unique costumes to reflect that. The world itself is so fun to draw. I want this to be a place that fans of fantasy would want to live in with characters that they would want adventures with.

Rat Queens webcomic by Wiebe, Dejmal, and Upchurch will run each week on the Image Comics tumblr until the release of the first issue on September 25.

Rat Queens #1 — including a special variant edition with a cover by Saga artist Fiona Staples — can be pre-ordered now from the July issue of Previews (Diamond Code JUL130404).

Image Comics Announces New Image Expo Guests, Exclusives

On July 2, 2013, Image Comics will host Image Expo in the Lam Theater at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, a first-of-its-kind event for comic book industry media, retailers, and fans. The one-day event will feature a keynote speech by Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson, top comics creators, and surprise guests. Image will reveal its new titles to be published in the coming months and provide unique insight with interview sessions with creators.

Image has announced that Mark Millar will be making a special transcontinental appearance at the convention to talk about his top-selling Image Comic Jupiter’s Legacy, which is co-created by artist Frank Quitely. Other guests include Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead; Ed Brubaker, co-creator and writer of Fatale, which has been nominated this year for six Eisner Awards, the comics industry’s most prominent awards; J. Michael Straczynski, proprietor of the imprint Joe’s Comics and creator of the Image series Ten Grand and Sidekick; Nick Dragotta, co-creator and artist on East of West, an apocalyptic western written by Jonathan Hickman; and Kurtis J. Wiebe, the up-and-coming creator of Peter Panzerfaust, which is being adapted by the BBC as a motion comic as well as a live-action drama, and the upcoming high-fantasy comedy Rat Queens. All of these creators will join Stephenson on stage for conversations about their work and announcements of never-before-revealed projects.

In addition to media and retailers, to whom Image is extending complimentary admission, the public may attend Image Expo by purchasing premium and general passes, which are available in limited quantities. Retailers and premium ticket holders will receive exclusive Image Expo editions of new Image Comics titles and a T-shirt. The exclusives, T-shirt, as well as other Image comic books and merchandise will also be available to purchase.

The Image Expo exclusives are special editions of Fatale #15 by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, Ghosted #1 by Joshua Williamson, Goran Sudzuka, and Miroslav Mrva; Satellite Sam #1 by Matt Fraction and Howard Chaykin; Sheltered #1 by Ed Brisson, Johnnie Christmas, and Shari Chankhamma; and a black-and-white ashcan of Sidekick #1 by J. Michael Straczynski, Tom Mandrake, and Brian Miller.

Image Expo will give comics readers the opportunity to interact with creators in a more intimate setting than the bustling environment of huge comic book conventions like San Diego Comic-Con. Signing sessions with Image’s special guests will take place during the afternoon.

More information about Image Expo may be found and tickets purchased at www.imagecomics.com/expo. Members of the press and comic book retailers who wish to register to attend or learn more about the event should email Image’s PR and Marketing Director Jennifer de Guzman.

Peter Panzerfaust Motion Comics Starring Elijah Wood, Ron Perlman, Summer Glau + more

A heartfelt story of friendship and heart-pounding adventure, the Image Comics/Shadowline comic book series, Peter Panzerfaust, has become a hit with multiple sell-outs of issues. The World War II based story is inspired by the classic J.M. Barrie creation Peter Pan. Now the fantastic independent series by writer Kurtis J. Wiebe and artist Tyler Jenkins is set to engross an even larger audience, with Adjacent Productions‘ and Quality Transmedia’s fully animated motion comic adaptation, featuring the voice talents of Elijah Wood, Summer Glau, Ron Perlman, and Dante Basco.

Wood and Glau will voice the characters of Peter and Wendy, while Perlman brings to life Peter’s arch-nemesis, the Nazi officer Kapitan Haken, the series’ incarnation of Captain Hook.  Basco, who played Rufio in the 1991 movie Hook, will return to the Neverland universe as the voice of Alain. The world premiere of a trailer for the motion comic will be shown at a panel at the Chicago entertainment convention C2E2. The session will feature Peter Panzerfaust creators Wiebe and Jenkins and Jeff Krelitz of Quality Transmedia, and takes place on Saturday, April 27 at 3:15 PM CDT.

The motion comic isn’t all Peter Panzerfaust fans have to look forward to.  Adjacent Productions and Quality Transmedia have announced that a live-action series based on the comic is also in development, and in May, Image Comics/Shadowline will release the second trade paperback volume of the series. Peter Panzerfaust: Hooked collects issues #6–10 of the series and features the introduction of Kapitan Haken, as well as the continued adventures of Peter, the Lost Boys, Wendy, and Tiger Lily in their fight against the Nazis as part of the French Resistance. It will be in stores on May 15 and is available to pre-order now. Peter’s adventures will continue in Peter Panzerfaust #11 in July.

Six new Image Firsts in May

Image Comics has announced the release of six new “Image Firsts” editions, printings of popular series’ first issues that only cost $1.00, to land in stores on May 1 just in time to coincide with Free Comic Book Day. The six new titles are Bedlam#1 by Nick Spencer and Riley Rossmo, Great Pacific #1 by Joe Harris and Martín Morazzo, Mind the Gap #1 by Jim McCann and Rodin Esquejo, Morning Glories #1 by Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma, Peter Panzerfaust #1 by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Tyler Jenkins, and Super Dinosaur #1 by Robert Kirkman and Jason Howard.

Bedlam, first published in October 2012, is a horror thriller about a former mass-murderer who is rehabilitated and puts his mind, formerly committed to atrocious acts of violence, to protecting the city he once terrorized. The collection of its first six issues will be released on May 1. Image Firsts edition Diamond code: FEB138575

In Great Pacific, which first hit shelves in November 2012, a wealthy young Texan takes on an unlikely frontier — a floating island of garbage in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Claiming it for himself as New Texas, Chas Worthington finds out that taking land is a very different thing from keeping it. GREAT PACIFIC #6 was in stores on April 3, and its first trade paperback, “TRASHED!”, collecting its first five issues, will be in stores on May 1. Image Firsts edition Diamond code: FEB138576

Mind the Gap is a supernatural mystery that debuted in May 2012, following the ensuing events after Elle Peterssen, a beautiful and rich young woman, is attacked in the subway and left for dead. While her body lies comatose, Elle’s mind can observe what goes on around her. She alone holds the key to her attack, but she can’t even remember who she was. MIND THE GAP #10 will be in stores on May 1, and its second volume, collecting issues #6-10, “WISH YOU WERE HERE,” will be in stores on May 29. Image Firsts edition Diamond code: FEB138577

Morning Glories, set in the elite boarding school Morning Glories Academy, has been a cult favorite since 2010. A complex and ever-unfolding mystery, MORNING GLORIES pits over-achieving teenagers against a baffling and dangerous curriculum — and against each other. Its fourth volume, TRUANTS, collecting issues #20-24, will be in stores on April 24. Image Firsts edition Diamond code: FEB138578

Peter Panzerfaust, a re-imagining of the classic Peter Pan tale set in World War II France, has been steadily gaining popularity since its first issue landed in stores in February 2012. Its tenth issue was released in March and PETER PANZERFAUST VOLUME TWO: HOOKED!, collecting issues #6-10 will be in stores on May 15. Image Firsts edition Diamond code: FEB138579

Super Dinosaur is an all-ages adventure story written by the creator of THE WALKING DEAD. Young Derek Dynamo and his best friend, who happens to be a Tyrannosaurus Rex with super-cool robotic enhancements, take on Earth’s — and Inner-Earth’s — baddest baddies. Its third trade paperback, collecting issues #12-17, was in stores in February and issue #20 will be in stores on April 24. Image Firsts edition Diamond code: FEB138580

The new Image Firsts issues will be in stores on May 1, joining thirty-one other Image Firsts editions.

Peter Panzerfaust #10 Gets Second Printing

The last few months have been a flurry for the Image Comics/Shadowline series Peter Panzerfaust. The World War II adventure comic inspired by J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan has sold out of its last three issues, including the most recent, #10 — even though orders were more than double the initial orders of #9.

The second printing of Peter Panzerfaust #10 will be in stores on April 17 and can be pre-ordered at comic book stores now. You can use Diamond Comics code FEB138250. The first printing sold out the same week as its March 13 release. In addition to the all-new cover featuring art by series artist Tyler Jenkins, Image will also be producing a convention exclusive edition of the issue with a blank cover for sketches and autographs and a limited edition retailer exclusive edition as a token of thanks for the readers and retailers who have supported Peter Panzerfaust.

Issue #10 closes out the “Paris” story arc for the series and will be collected in the series’ second trade paperback, which will be in stores on May 15.

Fueled by the announcement of the production of a motion comic adaptation by the BBC and coverage in USA Today and The Huffington Post, Peter Panzerfaust has become the quintessential independent comics success story. A personal story for its creators writer Kurtis J. Wiebe and artist Jenkins, Peter Panzerfaust offers an emotional depth in a high-concept package, capturing readers’ devotion to this comic book series outside of the superhero mainstream.
