Pitch Perfect 2 Opens on Top, Mad Max in Second, Age of Ultron Drops to Third

pitch-perfect-2-pp2_rgbA big question going in to this past weekend was what film would be on top when it was all up. Pitch Perfect 2 was on top when the weekend settled, earning an estimated $70.3 million in its first weekend. The original film earned $14.8 million its first weekend and ended with $65 million domestically. Internationally the film earned $38.1 million for a total of $108.4 million its first week. That’s almost as much the first film earned its entire run.

Mad Max: Fury Road had to settle for second place with a solid $44.44 million. The film was rumored to be troubled, and early testing was poor which led to reshoots. The film is being praised, so whatever they did in between clearly worked to fix things.

With two high-profile films opening up, Avengers: Age of Ultron dropped to third in its third week. The film added $38.84 million to its domestic total. The film crossed the billion dollar mark worldwide. Its foreign total is $770.5 million. The film has earned a total of $1.143 billion so far.

In other comic movie news Kingsman: The Secret Service continues to earn at the box office. The film added another $191,000 domestically. The film has earned a total of $402.9 million globally.

So far Furious 7 holds the top spot globally earning $1.4888 billion. Age of Ultron sits at the top spot domestically.

Next weekend sees Tomorrowland and Poltergeist debut during the long holiday. Pitch Perfect 2 currently has a 69% rating on RottenTomatoes, Mad Max: Fury Road is an impressive 98%, and Age of Ultron is at 74%. It’ll be interesting to see what holds steady and what drops when the dust settles this time next week.

Avengers: Age of Ultron Remains on Top

Avengers_Age_Of_Ultron-poster1In its second week at the domestic box office, Avengers: Age of Ultron earned an additional $77.2 million. That’s a drop of 59.6% from the previous week. That’s the second highest second week ever, just behind the original film. Domestically the film has earned $312.6 million so far, just 35.7% of its total.

Internationally, the film added $65 million to bring its total at the foreign box office to a total of $562.4 million. It has yet to open in Japan or China, so expect an impressive boost from those two markets.

The film has earned a total of $874.99 million so far and had an estimated budget of $250 million. It’ll likely be two more weeks before the film crosses the billion dollar mark, but it does have tough competition with the opening of Pitch Perfect 2, and Mad Max: Fury Road.

In other movie news Furious 7 continues to earn, adding $5.3 million domestically to its total this past weekend. The film has earned $338.4 million domestically, and worldwide is at $1.47 billion. The film has about $50 million to go to move into the third highest grossing film worldwide ever passing the original Avengers. There’s a chance it pulls it off. The big question too will be if Age of Ultron can catch up to the film and beat it to the finish line as top grossing film of the year.

In other comic movie news, Kingsman: The Secret Service continues to earn in its 13th week. The film added $235,000 domestically to bring its total to $127.2 million and worldwide total to $402.75 million.

Age of Ultron Falls Short of the Record

Avengers_Age_Of_Ultron-poster1When some folks were predicting a $200 million opening, is anything less a failure? Marvel‘s Avengers: Age of Ultron ruled the box office, naturally, and opened with an impressive $187.7 million. That’s the second-best debut ever. Marvel’s first Avengers holds the record at $207.4 million.

The film did have one record. It accounted for 85 percent of the top 12 box office. That beats the Spider-Man 3‘s 83 percent.

While the film earned more than the first Avengers film on Friday, it performed worse on Saturday, 18 percent lower. It earned $57.2 million which was below the first film as well as Iron Man 3 which earned $62.3 million.

There’s many factors as to why the film fell short including sporting events like the NBA playoffs, The Kentucky Derby, and even the Pacquiao vs Mayweather fight.

The film was 59 percent male and 59 percent over the age of 25. It also received an “A” Cinemascore.

Internationally, the film added $168 million to bring its total to $439 million. It opened with the biggest debut ever in Mexico and the second highest in Thailand. It opens in China May 12th.

The film has now earned $626.7 million in the two weeks its been open worldwide and it had an estimated budget of $250 million.

In other movie news, Furious 7 dropped to third place after ruling the box-office. It earned another $6.2 million to bring its domestic total to $330.5 million. Globally the film has earned $1.43 billion. The film is in fourth for all-time worldwide grosses. There’s a chance it knocks off the first Avengers to move into third.

In other comic movie news, Kingsman: The Secret Service earned an additional $185,000. The film has earned $401.3 million worldwide to date.

Furious 7 Holds on to First, Age of Ultron Over $200 Million

furious-7-poster1In its fourth week at the box-office, Furious 7 remained in first place on the domestic chart, earning an estimated $18.3 million. The film has earned $320.5 million domestically.

Overseas is the real story though. Furious 7 is only the third film to earn over $1 billion overseas, and currently has earned $1.001 billion. When you combine its domestic and international totals, the film has earned $1.32 billion. It is now the top grossing film ever in China.

The film currently sits in fifth in worldwide grosses and will absolutely get to fourth. There’s a chance it dethrones the first Avengers film which earned $1.5 billion.

To do that, the movie will have to have some impressive legs (wheels?) and still perform when Avengers: Age of Ultron opens this coming weekend domestically. That film has already opened in some overseas markets and has earned $201.2 million. Disney has said that’s 44 percent better than the first Avengers film and 24 percent better than Iron Man 3. Internationally, the film still has yet to open in Span, Mexico, and China.

In other comic related movie news, Kingsman: The Secret Service added $550,000 to its total. The film has earned a solid $126.5 million domestically, and $273.2 in foreign markets. Its total is $399,635,000 as of now. The film’s budget was $81 million, so that’s a pretty solid return for the film.

Furious 7 Crosses $1.1 billion and Remains in First

furious-7-poster1Three weeks in a row Furious 7 has held the top spot at the box-office. The film earned an estimated $29.1 million this past weekend bringing the film’s domestic gross to $294.4 million. The film has earned $1.15 billion so far world wide. That puts it in seventh in all-time earnings right now, and that’s just after three weeks. There’s a good chance it’ll move into fourth by the time the movie’s run is over, putting it behind the first Avengers film. The movie has two weeks until Avengers: Age of Ultron comes out and momentum is drained.

In other openings, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 came in second earning $24 million domestically. Unfriended was third with $16 million. Monkey Kingdom was seventh earning $4.7 million. True Story debuted in eleventh with $1.9 million, and Child 44 was in seventeenth earning $600,00.

In comic movie news, Kingsman: The Secret Service came in sixteenth earning an estimated $650,000. The film has earned $125.6 million domestically and worldwide the film has earned $396.4 million. It’ll likely cross the $400 million mark by the time its run is over.

Globally the film has already earned over $800.5 million. In two weeks, the film is already the highest grossing film in the franchise. The film is in serious contention to become the one of the highest grossing films ever, and projections currently having it earn about $1.3 billion placing fifth.

Internationally the film $68.6 million in its opening day in China, which is a record in that country. That’s close to what the last film earned in its entire run in the country.

Kingsman: The Secret Service continues to do well earning another $1.325 million to bring its domestic total to $124.5 million. Globally the film has earned $392 million. It will likely cross the $400 million mark.

It’s still more than two weeks out until the next comic based film opens Avengers: Age of Ultron. Expect records to be set its debut weekend.

Furious 7 Opens with $384 million

furious-7-poster1Seven movies in, but the Fast and Furious chain hasn’t slowed down. Domestically Furious 7 brought in an estimated $143.6 million over the weekend. That places it ninth as far as openings.

Overseas the film earned $240 million and that’s without opening in China, Japan, and Russia. That’s a total of about $384 million worldwide already.

This is the highest debut for a film in the franchise and makes it the record holder for April.

The film was 51% men, 56% over the age of 25, and Hispanic moviegoers made up 37% of the weekend movie going audience. It earned an “A” Cinemascore.

When it comes to comic adaptations, Kingsman: The Secret Service was in eighth place bringing in an additional $1.7 million domestically. Globally, the film has earned $369.8 million so far. It will likely get to $400 million by the time it’s done.

The next comic adaptation to hit the big screen is Avengers: Age of Ultron which hits screens on May 1.

Home Wins the Box Office

home-banner2A kids movie featuring an alien and an African American girl led the box office, giving a win for inclusion! Home was top of the domestic box office earning a solid $54 million in its first weekend. Its debut was similar to other animated films this year.

Coming in second with an estimated $34.61 million was Get Hard, which undoes all of the positive steps forward Home represents. The film was savaged in reviews, and got blah scores from those seeing it. The film was also accused of playing on stereotypes and homophobia.

In comic movie news, Kingsman: The Secret Service was in fifth place, earning a little under $3.1 million. Domestically, the film has earned $119.4 million and globally it has earned $327.7 million.

Big Hero 6 continues to earn at the box office, bringing in $89,000. Domestically, the film has earned $222.1 million and globally the film has earned $651.7 million.

In about a month, the first major comic blockbuster will hit theaters, Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The Divergent Series InsurgentThe second movie in The Divergent series of films was in the top spot at the box office this past weekend. The Divergent Series: Insurgent brought in an estimated $54 million over the weekend. That is really close to what the first film opened up with.

The film’s audience was 60% female, slightly more than the first movie which was 59%. The movie also earned an “A-” rating from CinemaScore.

The comic book adaptation Kingsman: The Secret Service inched towards $300 million globally. The film earned an estimated $4.6 million in its sixth week. The film has earned $114.57 million at the domestic box office. Right now it has earned $295.2 million globally, and has yet to open in China.
