Kindle Unlimited & comiXology Unlimited See Nearly 600 New Kodansha Additions

Kodansha Comics has expanded their availability on comiXology Unlimited and Kindle Unlimited to include an additional nearly 600 manga volumes to the Amazon-powered comics, graphic novel and manga streaming services.

These additions which include volumes from manga series like Attack on Titan Before the Fall, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Gleipnir, Chihayafuru and more, join the 400+ manga titles already part of the streaming service. On top of that, select full series, like anime-inspiring manga, A Silent Voice, Inuyashiki, and Kiss Him Not Me, are now available for fans to read from start to finish. And as an added benefit fans can read many of these additions in Guided View, a proprietary technology that provides an immersive and cinematic, panel-to-panel reading experience.

Classic Manga Initial D Debuts from ComiXology Originals and Kodansha Comics

comiXology and Kodansha Comics have announced volumes 1-38 of Initial D, the all-time classic manga about Japanese street racing by Shuichi Shigeno, are now available to read digitally at no additional cost for Amazon Prime, Kindle Unlimited, and comiXology Unlimited customers and are also available for purchase on Kindle and comiXology. Volumes 39-48 will be released later this year. With volumes 34-38 never before translated to English, this year marks the long awaited release of the entire Initial D series in English.

More than a manga, Initial D is a cultural phenomenon. Upon its release, Initial D perfectly captured the world of Japanese street racing and kicked off a global craze. It spawned a legendary anime series, video games, movies, not to mention an immortally beloved techno soundtrack. It also inspired the film The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Kindle Unlimited includes Comics and Graphic Novels. Can comiXology Unlimited be far behind?

2014-07-18_0941It’s been rumored for a few days now, but Amazon today introduced Kindle Unlimited, a new subscription service that gives customers access to over 600,000 Kindle Books, and and some of Amazon’s thousands of Audible audiobooks for $9.99 a month.

But, buried in the massive offering from Amazon are is a section dubbed “Comics & Graphic Novels” featuring currently 3,690 books.

When you dig deeper into the offering, things get a bit stranger. The biggest publisher I’ve found so far is IDW Publishing, but their offerings are limited. There’s also a lot of manga, but within that count too is a lot of “how too” books as well as books on the industry, so it’s not all comics and graphic novels in the traditional sense. What does seem present is a lot of independent books, some I recognize as having been sent to our site to review, or from Kickstarter.

The big question though, is how comiXology fits into the bigger plans. Earlier this year Amazon purchased the digital comics distributor, and other than how you can purchase your books (in the app vs through the web), the changes have been minimal. Rumors of comiXology providing an all you can read service have persisted, and it’s a question that’s come up at every panel I’ve ever attended of theirs. With this move by Amazon, maybe we’re seeing the first steps towards that.
