Review: Sonic the Hedgehog #1

After defeating the evil Dr. Eggman’s latest plot, Sonic is racing around the world to shut down the robotic Badnik forces that are still attacking villages. But it’s a big job for one person-even Sonic the Hedgehog! Fortunately, he’ll have some help from his best friend: Tails!

I have rarely read a Sonic comic even though it was one of the longest running comics ever when it was with Archie and from what I hear, really good. So, with a fresh start, a new publishing with IDW Publishing, I thought I’d check out Sonic the Hedgehog #1 and it’s not bad.

I wasn’t much of a SEGA player when I was a kid so my exposure to Sonic as a whole is pretty limited. The first issue drops you into the action. Dr. Eggman is gone but villages are being attacked. Who’s doing it? Why are they doing it? That’s the bulk of the first issue. But it also features lots of action as Sonic and Tails take on baddie robots. Writer Ian Flynn delivers a comic that answers some questions, leaves a lot still in the air, and makes it intriguing. The result is much more adult than expected though I’ve heard that’s the same with previous volumes.

The art by Tracy Yardley has lots of life with inks by Jim Amash and Bob Smith, colors by Matt Herms, and lettering by Corey Breen. Everyone looks unique, including the generic townspeople and there’s a solid mix of high and low tech. The depiction of the “speed” and “movement” of Sonic is key to make this comic work and it does it all really well.

While the end product didn’t have me super excited, I did enjoy it. Enough that I want to check out the next issue. I can’t compare it to what has come before but as far as a fresh start, it’s a good one. The comic feel like it’s one that’s good for kids and adults alike and I’m interested in seeing where it goes from here.

Sonic Returns to Comics with Four Issues this April from IDW Publishing

Sonic the Hedgehog #1 CoverAt breakneck speed, IDW Publishing is fast approaching a brand new era of Sonic the Hedgehog comics starting with a new #1 issue. Anticipation for this exciting launch runs high and, as a way to express gratitude to the fans for their patience, the series will kick off with a new issue each and every Wednesday during the month of April. Following the release of the first four issues, the ongoing series will continue on a monthly release schedule from May onward.

Longtime Sonic scribe Ian Flynn has been tapped as the series writer. His contributions to the Sonic comic mythos cannot be overstated and his return to the franchise has been met with overwhelming fan approval. Flynn will be joined by a stable of talented artists, some who will be familiar faces to readers, and others who will be making their Sonic comics debut. Among those contributing to the first four issues are Tracy Yardley (interior art on issue 1), Adam Bryce Thomas (issue 2), Jennifer Hernandez (issue 3), Evan Stanley (issue 4), Tyson Hesse (main covers), Nathalie Fourdraine (variant covers), Rafa Knight (variant cover), Jamal Peppers (variant cover), Jonathan Gray (variant cover), and Sonic Mania artist Kieran Gates (variant cover).

Each issue in April will feature Sonic teaming up with a different ally: Tails, Amy Rose, Knuckles the Echidna, plus the introduction of a brand new character, Tangle, who will make her debut in Sonic the Hedgehog #4.
