Karl Kerschl’s The Abominable Charles Christopher Comes to Kickstarter

The Abominable Charles Christopher

Launched in 2007 as an online comic, The Abominable Charles Christopher, Karl Kerschl’s Eisner Award-winning story about a silent sasquatch in a world full of chatty animal characters, is making its way to print in a new volume, exclusively on the Kickstarter. The campaign focuses on the third volume of the series, collecting over a hundred previously unpublished strips from the webcomic. The first two volumes will also be available for readers who want the entire story at their fingertips.

The Abominable Charles Christopher follows the eponymous Charles Christopher, a dim-witted but good-natured sasquatch, on a series of adventures through the Cedar Forest as he helps and hinders the animal residents. At times a slice-of-life gag comic and at other times an epic fantasy, the comic has gained a loyal following of readers and won the Eisner Award for Best Webcomic in 2011.

Abominable Volume 3 is the featured book of the Kickstarter campaign, but there are plenty of other perks for fans of the series. New readers can get all three volumes at a discounted price and Kerschl has not only done one-of-a-kind original art for the campaign, he’s brought on some powerhouse talent to provide depictions of the comic’s cast. Natalie Hall and Creaturebox are among the first to be showcased, with other artists to be announced.

The campaign us currently running and well past its goal. It ends on July 14 at 10am ET.

Enter a Marvel Universe Without the Avengers as Marvel Reveals the Heroes Reborn Titles

The Marvel Universe has been reborn! From mastermind creators Jason Aaron and Ed McGuiness comes Heroes Reborn #1, a bold new vision of the world you knew. Spinning out of their epic work on Avengers, HEROES REBORN will answer the question of what the Marvel Universe would look like if the Avengers never assembled. The exciting —and unsettling — ripple effect the Avenger’s absence has on the rest of the Marvel Universe will be explored in a series of one-shots starting in May. These essential tie-ins will reveal the history behind the new reality of your favorite heroes AND lay the groundwork for its’ unpredictable future.

At the center of the grand tapestry that is Heroes Reborn is Hyperion. The teenage Hyperion’s cosmic quests with his Shi’ar friends near their end, but none of the young heroes are ready to say farewell. A quick mission in the Negative Zone sounds like the perfect coda to a storied fellowship…but what awaits Hyperion, Gladiator and the rest is horror and agony beyond their wildest nightmares!

A the thought-provoking series tackles the mystery behind Peter Parker’s new life. Peter’s the biggest Hyperion fan in the world, and he also just happens to be chummy with his favorite hero thanks to a photography gig at the Daily Bugle! SURELY, nothing can go wrong, with his camera (and him) in the heart of the action… Right?

What does this era have in store for mutants? Years ago, Magneto and Professor X led Earth’s mutants in a final push for independence against the Squadron Supreme of America. What followed was the Squadron’s Mutant Massacre, a violent rebuttal that left mutantkind forever wounded, and Xavier dead…or so Magneto thought. Years later, Magneto discovers Xavier clinging to life in the astral plane and gathers his allies for a first-of-its-kind rescue mission to restore hope for mutantkind before it’s too late.

Without the Avengers, Marvel’s brightest young heroes have grown up with different inspirations. The Squadron Supreme of America have taken root in the hearts and minds of all, but none more so than a trio of youthful champions who call themselves the Young Squadron! Kid Spectrum (Sam Alexander), Girl Power (Kamala Khan) and the all-new Falcon (Miles Morales) are here to here to defend the world against all threats…or are they?

And finally, there’s a new team of villains on the loose and you won’t believe who’s a part of it. Natasha Romanov, Clint Barton, Scott Lang, and Victor Creed lead an assault on the Squadron. After the Civil War that split the Squadron Supreme in half, Nighthawk formed his own Squadron in Europe. But not all of Europe is okay with it. Baron Zemo has put together his own team to take them down and the Squadron doesn’t stand a chance.

Welcome to the world of Heroes Reborn. Immerse yourself in this compelling new age in the Marvel Universe when it begins in May.

Canadian Retailers and Creators Come Together for “Be Our Heroes, Canada!”

Be Our Hereos Canada

As brick and mortar retailers around the world find creative ways to preserve their businesses during unprecedented circumstances, forward-thinking comic book retailers across Canada will come together with notable comic book artists and writers to benefit their business and preserve the audience they have worked so hard together to serve.

Be Our Heroes, Canada” is a collaboration between Canadian comic shops and creators to leverage each store’s individual audiences to both build and strengthen the national comic book community and generate income for all.

The Dragon owner Jennifer Haines said in the announcement:

What started as a conversation between four retailers on how we could cross-promote our shops turned into this idea of a national fundraiser to help preserve Canada’s unique comics landscape. Now more than ever, we need to come together to support one another, and provide our respective communities with a way to stay connected, all while protecting retailers that might otherwise fall through the cracks of government funding.

The event has been organized by Guelph, Ontario’s The Dragon family of stores, along with Ontario retailers Gotham Central, Heroes World, and Cyber City Comix, and will take place over two days through Facebook Live, with scheduled slots for creators and stores.

Funds raised through this two-day national celebration of the comic arts will be collected and distributed by the Comic Legends Legal Defense Fund, a Canadian-based non-profit organization protecting free speech in the industry, supporting retailers, schools, and libraries, creators and publishers alike.

“Be Our Heroes, Canada” is currently accepting offers of participation among the Canadian creative community, and will announce the full list of participating stores and creators in the coming days. Current participants include: Adam Gorham,  Andy Belanger, Brendan Fletcher, Casey Parsons, Chip Zdarsky, Dylan Burnett, Ed Brisson, J. Torres, Jason Fabok, Jason Loo, Jay Stephens, Karl Kerschl, Ken Lashley, Michael Cho, Ray Fawkes, Richard Pace, Scott Chantler, Seth, Shawn Daly, Svetlana Chmakova, and Yanick Paquette.
