Review: Rick and Morty Presents: Jerry #1

Rick and Morty Presents: Jerry #1

One of the greatest actors of all time, and one whose career was cut way too short, was John Belushi. Anyone who has seen him on Saturday Night Live or any myriad of movies he was in can attest to his truly unique talent. His many skits on SNL were legendary and continue to inspire comedic minds everywhere. To only remember him for his role of John Blutarsky in Animal House is fairly reductive but understandable. He only appeared in 13 movies and every role was also quite memorable.

One of my favorite films by him was Neighbors where he played Earl Keese, a mild-mannered man whose life gets turned upside down by an insufferable couple who moves in next door. His performance in that film would have an inadvertent influence on storytellers everywhere leading them to discover characters who would normally be invisible in life and most stories. One fairly popular example of his inspiration is Stephen Root’s portrayal of Milton in Office Space one that is melancholic and amusing at once. Another such character can be found in Rick and Morty in the character of Jerry who is deftly explored in Rick and Morty Presents: Jerry#1.

We catch up with Jerry, shortly after he gets back with Beth, as his self confidence takes a nosedive when Beth doesn’t find him attractive anymore. This is when Jerry decides to take matters into his own hands buying everything that every weight loss guru sells, that is until Rick offers him a new invention that will get him there faster. The experiment is a success making Jerry a buffer and nicer version of himself but as all Rick’s experiments do, they go haywire, as his new invention has some dangerous side effects, making him a mutant.

Overall, the comic is a funny and entertaining story that captures the feeling of the show. The story by Ryan Ferrier is fun, rollicking, and irreverent. The art by CJ Cannon, Josh Perez, and Sarah Stern is beautiful. Altogether, an amusing story that feels like an episode of Rick and Morty.
