Lantinx Series Season of the Bruja Explores Heritage, Culture, and Magic in 2022

Oni Press has announce the forthcoming Latinx single-issue series, Season of the Bruja, written by Aaron Durán, illustrated and colored by up-and-coming artist Sara Soler, and with lettering by AndWorld Design’s Jaime Martinez, coming Spring 2022. Season of the Bruja is Durán’s debut project in which he adapted much of the lore for the series from his own family’s traditions.

Althalia Cabrera might seem like any other witchy Portland hipster whiling away her days behind the counter of a freaky occult museum, but there’s more to her whole deal than a trendy pursuit of the craft. Althalia is a bruja by blood—the youngest in a long line of powerful magic users from a long-ago culture indigenous to Mexico. In her twenty years, Althalia has studied with her loving abuela by her side, supporting and mentoring her use of the family magic, and protecting her from the darkest parts of their practice’s history. But just as Althalia’s inner light and power begin to shine, the darkness of the past finds its way into her world and strikes a tragic blow, testing Althalia in ways she might not be prepared to survive.

Inspired by Aaron Durán’s lifelong love for his Mexican family’s cultural traditions and his devoted fandom of horror stories, comics, and Buffy the Vampire SlayerSeason of the Bruja is a five-part series and will be available where comics are sold March 16, 2022.

Magma Comix and Heavy Metal Announce Intrusion from Ethan Sacks and Marco Lorenzana

Intrusion is a parable about the consequences of misguided prejudice and hate. The new one-shot comic is coming from writer/co-creator Ethan Sacks, artist/co-creator Marco Lorenzana, colorist Erick Arciniega, and letterer Jaime Martinez. It features a cover by Daniel Govar and a variant cover by Marco Lorenzana. Coming from Heavy Metal imprint Magma Comix, the horror comic comes to comic shelves on September 22, 2021.

Set deep in the Louisiana bayou in the late 1760s, INTRUSION tells the story of the Broussard family, Acadians seeking a new life after being cast out of Canada by the British and having lived the last several years in indentured servitude. They arrive in Louisiana desperate for a second chance. Settling on a patch of remote land bordered by a “cursed” swamp, Jacques will do anything to defend his family’s homestead…even if that puts them on a collision course with a creature that dwells in the bayou. Conceived as a one-shot horror comic from creators Ethan Sacks and Marco Lorenzana, the story makes use of the flipbook format in an innovative way to tell the story from two very different perspectives—the human and the monster. The second story starts at the “flipped” back cover and both the first and second stories merge on a double-page spread in the middle.

The patriarch of the Broussard family will stop at nothing to defend his family from the horrors that lurk in the swamp—and neither will the Grunch!

Review: Roman Ritual TPB

630bcf1ca3f33240451e22da44ca25be-_sx360_ql80_ttd_

“…and upon this rock I will build my Church; and the Gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.” How can the Holy See last when an evilness spreads within, touching the core of the same institution? A new miniseries by master of horror, writer El Torres!

A cynical, and rebellious priest, with all the angst of teenager, seems to be the only who can save the church from itself in Roman Ritual. The main character John Beckett, may remind some readers of Vertigo/DC’s John Constantine in some ways. Yet, there is one key difference, John Beckett has faith. That faith makes him the churches only chance at being saved from its own corruption, and the possession of its pope.

The artwork is dark, and some times disgusting as the story goes on. Yet that works well for the novel which is focused so clearly on corruption and demonic possession. The landscapes of Rome by artist Jaime Martinez are drawn in a superb fashion.
