How do you announce winter is coming to an end? You spring it on them! Welcome the springtime with a celebration of DC’s greenest and greatest. As the flowers bloom, breathe in that Swamp Thing smell. Watch the Blue Beetles fly out from Titans West. Pick a Captain Carrot or two from Floronic Man’s garden, but make sure to avoid the Poison Ivy. The season may go by in a Flash, but don’t worry—stories like these last forever. Oh, and Wonder Woman will be there, too!

Review: It’s Only Teenage Wasteland #1

It's Only Teenage Wasteland #1

Parents go out of town, it’s time to throw a party. The concept has played out in entertainment and real life so many times it’s become a classic and a genre by itself. It’s also a weird one as these types of events are ones we ourselves experience. So, how does entertainment top our own experiences? It’s Only Teenage Wasteland #1 does that by taking wrecking the house to a whole new level.

Written by Curt Pires, It’s Only Teenage Wasteland #1 focuses on Javi and his friends. They’re not popular, but they’re also not the “losers” either. Javi’s parents head of out town and that gives him the opportunity to throw a party and up their status in school a little bit. But, in these sorts of situations, things get out of hand and escalate.

How much does it escalat?

How about waking up after some disaster/apocalypse after a fight?

Yeah, this is a much different type of party out of hand story and where it’s going I have absolutely no idea. But, it’s a hell of a twist to a genre we’ve seen so many times before.

The art by Jacoby Salcedo is great. It reminds me a lot of Tyler Boss’ style and it works so well with this type of story. Salcedo is joined by Mark Dale by color and lettering by Micah Myers. What I particularly like about this debut is how the art tells so much about the characters. The style of clothes, hair, or details in the background add so much to what you can expect. A Confederate flag for instance tells you everything you need to know about certain characters for instance before they even open their mouths. It’s a detail that informs the reader but also makes what they say and what they do not as shocking and not as out of the blue. It’s visuals that add to the characters and helps build the world.

It’s Only Teenage Wasteland #1 is a great start that has a solid hook. The characters are interesting and where it’s all going feels both new and familiar. This will be an exciting one that takes genres that have been done to death and mashes them together. This is one to keep an eye on.
