Review – Zenescope’s Irresistible #1 to 4

Allen Keeg was your average middle age heart broken sap who just went through the worst break up in his life. That was a year ago. Since then Allen’s been having trouble getting back into the swing of things. But all that’s about to change. When Allen saves an old woman from being mugged he will be given an amazing supernatural ability that will change his whole life. But is the gift of being irresistible to every woman he meets a gift or a dreadful curse.

Comic books are often thought of as power fantasies for grown men who haven’t escaped adolescent. They’re misogynistic. They’re wish fulfillment. This series takes all of that and embraces it in a way. So many guys have wondered what it’d be like to be able to sleep with any girl they wanted. To have every girl attracted to them. This series takes that idea, and takes it to the extreme.

Sticking with the fairy tale fantasy of other Zenescope series, we get the whole backstory of the curse and where it came from, to me the weakest part of the series. The most interesting to me is the main character Allen and his dealing with this new world and his new status.

There’s some issues I had with the mini-series, it was actually too short! This could easily have been a maxi-series and I think it being limited to four issues actually limits the break down of Allen. It’d of been nice to see him struggle more with this situation and his pining for his ex-girlfriend. Instead the story is a bit condensed which works against it.

This limited series is absolutely for adults and for something different, definitely worth checking out.

Pick of the Week – Daredevil #18

Checking out what’s coming out this week, there’s a lot of solid books to choose from. After a lot of internal debate, I have to go with Daredevil #18 as this week’s pick. Mark Waid‘s run on the series has been classic and the combination of amazing artists makes this one of the best comics out there by any publisher. There’s few series all the reviewers can all agree on, but it’s pretty unanimous that Daredevil is a series that has to be read and should be read by everyone, and yes it’s that good.

  • Daredevil #18 – see above
  • Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #15 and Ultimate Comics Ultimates #15 – Marvel has made their Ultimate universe, the one where anything can happen and everything does. You want a universe where everything is on the table? Here you go.
  • Revival #3 – Image Comics has a huge hit which is as much philosophical as it’s a “zombie” comic. One of my favorite of the year.
  • Extermination #4 – BOOM!’s post apocalyptic alien adventure has been a great ride, a slow one, but entertaining enough to get me coming back each month wondering what will happen next.
  • Irresistible #3  – Zenescope has an interesting series here, where a man becomes as the title says irresistible to women.
