Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Savage Avengers #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

A Town Called Terror #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue was an intriguing mystery mixed with some horror that wasn’t what we were expecting. We want to see where this goes as a son returns home after his father forces him to.

Break Out #2 (Dark Horse) – The first issue introduced us to a world where mysterious cubes kidnap people under the age of 18 and the group of kids that are going to break those taken out.

Duo #1 (DC Comics/Milestone) – Milestone’s Earth-M expands with new and original characters and Duo kicks that off!

History Comics: Stonewall Riots (First Second) – A great opportunity and way to learn about this historic and important event.

I Hate This Place #1 (Image Comics) – A mysterious force that attracts ghosts, aliens, and other supernatural beings is in a farm house inherited by two individuals.

Immortal X-Men #2 (Marvel) – The first issue shook up the Quiet Council and we want to see where this series goes to changing the status-quo.

Kaiju Score: Steal from the Gods #2 (AfterShock) – The popcorn heist series continues as a new team must figure out how to steal from a kaiju while also not get killed by a rival gang.

LEGO Ninjago Garmadon #2 (Image Comics/Skybound) – The first issue was fantastic and feels like it captures the “LEGO feel” while not overdoing. Story is first here, it just happens to be in the world of Ninjago!

Life Zero #4 (Ablaze) – Turn your brain off zombie killing action.

Savage Avengers #1 (Marvel) – Conan’s on the run from a Deathlok hunting him down. There’s a Terminator aspect to it all but it’s the team itself, both characters and creative, that has us excited.

Shaolin Cowboy: Cruel to Kin #1 (Dark Horse) – Geof Darrow’s latest volume of the popular series. We’re always excited to check out where he takes it and the amazing art.

X-Men Red #2 (Marvel) – How would this series stand out from the other “X” titles? We found out in the first issue which planted a nice flag and teased the direction it was going.

Kieron Gillen, writing Immortal X-Men, Die and RPG advice

Embrace the Neo-Claremontism and “warped Mutant Catholicism” as writer Kieron Gillen returns to X-Men comics as the writer of Immortal X-Men with artists Lucas Werneck and David Curiel. He’s revisiting Mr. Sinister and Hope Summers, two characters he’s left an indelible mark on, who have new prominence in the Krakoan Era of X-Men. There’s politics, backstabbing and of course music.

Here’s his Immortal X-Men Playlist – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1slXJJdxhqg2CxDKQHepog

At about 1 hr and 5 minutes in Kieron offers some great advice to RPG players.

The Avengers, X-Men, and Eternals Struggle to find Peace as Judgement Day Looms

In the land of the righteous, the wicked will be put to death!”

This summer, the Marvel Universe will be judged by a power greater than anything they’ve encountered before in A.X.E.: Judgement Day, the latest Marvel Comics crossover event. Written by mastermind creator Kieron Gillen and drawn by the epically talent Valerio Schiti, A.X.E.: Judgement Day will find the Avengers, X-Men, and Eternals embroiled in a deadly conflict. Kicking off after the Eternals boldly attack mutantkind’s new home on Krakoa, this complex saga will pay off various plot threads that have defined these franchises in recent years including mutantkind’s newfound immortality, the Eternals’ discovery of long-hidden truths about their species, and the Avengers intense dealings with the Celestials. The event will have a massive impact on the characters involved and their stories moving forward and fans can get their first hint of the full scope of A.X.E.: Judgement Day right now by learning more about the event’s issues and tie-ins set to debut in July.

July will see the release of both A.X.E.: Judgement Day #1 and A.X.E.: Judgement Day #2 and Gillen and Schiti’s emotional opening issues promise to define the summer. Both issues feature covers by Mark Brooks! The X-Men claim they’re the planets’ new gods. The Eternals know that position is already filled. The Avengers are about to realize exactly how many secrets their so-called friends have kept from them. Years of tension lead to a volcanic eruption as two worlds burn. Who has leaked the X-Men’s secrets to their latest foes? Why is Tony Stark abducting an old friend? And who stands in judgment over the whole world? As the world shakes, an unlikely group of heroes and less-than-heroes gather to find a peaceful solution. Sadly, the best laid plans of man, mutant and Eternal oft go awry…

Gillen will also team up with artist Guiu Vilanova to explore the root of the Eternals’ fury against mutantkind and the schism it’s causing in their society in a three-issue limited series beginning in July titled A.X.E.: Death to the Mutants. Esad Ribíc provides the cover to the debut issue. The mutants are Deviants. Eternals are coded to correct excess deviation. The mutants are eternal, Mars colonizers, ever-spreading. Eternals know what they should do. Our heroes don’t want to, but can they resist the murderous designs coded into their body as surely as any Sentinel? And if they can’t, can anyone survive the coming judgment?

In addition, A.X.E.: Judgement Day will spin off into the following titles throughout July:

  • Immortal X-Men #5 will see Gillen and artist Michele Bandini spotlighting one of mutantkind’s most fervent warriors—EXODUS. Bennet du Paris was born in the 12th century. Exodus marched forth with a sword in his hand and a shield in his heart to protect what he believes. It’s now the 21st century. What’s changed? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. And the Eternals who dared attack Krakoa are going to discover what that means. With a cover by Giuseppe Camuncoli.
  • Deadpool joins and Kraven’s mutant hunt begins in Benjamin Percy and Robert Gill’s X-Force #30. X-Force has taken some lumps, but a new era begins as old-school X-Forcer Wade Wilson makes his grand return! Well, grand for him, necessary for the team, as X-Force needs all the help it can get in the fallout from the Hellfire Gala and the revelations of A.X.E.: JUDGMENT DAY! Find out why Kraven the Hunter is involved in the start of a landmark storyline titled “The Hunt for X.” Joshua Cassara provides the main cover with a variant by Carlos Magno.
  • Who are the true inheritors of the Earth? The X-Men and Eternals fight over the answer to that question in X-Men #13 by Gerry Duggan and C.F. Villa. The mutants are the next stage of evolution. Evolution depends on a mutation of genes – the genes of the offspring deviating from their progenitors. Some would call the X-gene EXCESS deviation. Those people are gonna need to be taken down a few pegs. With a cover by Martin Coccolo.
  • And Arakko sees war yet again in X-Men Red #5 by Al Ewing and Stefano Caselli. No one who is not an Omega-level mutant has ever taken one of the nine seats of the Great Ring. Together, they are the greatest power Arakko has ever known – and it’s nine against one. So, if the nine are losing…what does that say about the one? Judgment Day has come to the Red Planet – and it’s Arakko’s greatest test since X OF SWORDS! Featuring a cover by Russell Dauterman!

Review: Immortal X-Men #1

Immortal X-Men #1

When it comes to the X-Men, there is an air of mystery which usually pulls fans to them. I can remember the first time I picked up one of their issues. I was at Jim Hanley’s Universe  back home in New York, which was one of the coolest comic book stores ever. It had Colossus on the cover, and from that issue on, I was hooked.

As the years have gone by there have been many authors who have guided that ship, but very few whose runs were memorable. One of the most honored is Chris Claremont and another being Kieron Gillen. In the debut issue of Immortal X-Men, Gillen returns, for a frightening take on the Quiet Council who rules during the Krakoan Age.

We are taken to Paris 1919, where Essex and Adler speak of the coming war, as both are members of the Quiet Council, and though Krakoa has enjoyed relative peace, it doesn’t stop infighting from bubbling over. We are taken to a meeting, where Magneto has decided to retire, which immediately creates a power vacuum, one which has each council member plotting for control. As Destiny gets her share of sycophants amongst the council members to nominate a new member, an unlikely frontrunner rises , Hope, who brought back Destiny and intimidates most on the island. By issue’s end,a slighted mutant takes revenge on the council for not choosing her, unleashing a deadly  behemoth, that could consume all the inhabitants.

Altogether, Immortal X-Men #1 is one of the better stories from this event, making Gillen the perfect storyteller. The story by Gillen is action packed. The art by creative team is beautiful. Altogether, a palace intrigue play that involves your favorite mutants, no one could write this better.
