Huge Detective #1 takes us to a world that feels like one giant mystery. In this world, giants have emerged from a deep slumber beneath the earth. A conflict ensued and eventually a treaty was resolved where the giants took over Australia, now called Brobdingnag. The two societies have come to live side by side though separate in their nations. The giants provide transportation while receiving items the humans have created. Now, a partnership has been formed as a detective is forced to team up with a giant to solve a murder but maybe something much larger.
Written by Adam Rose, Huge Detective #1 is weird, but in a good way. The world is a familiar one but it just has giants as well. But, Rose puts much more thought into it all delivering small quirks about it all that makes the world more lived in. It doesn’t just feel like a murder mystery with a quirky idea thrown in to try and make it unique.
Rose’s magic is in those details. The detective at the center of the case talks of headaches adding a twist on the “troubled detective” concept. The giant too is able to help in interesting ways like using a sense of smell to figure out clues. Then there’s whatever is happening on the moon.
The art by Magenta King is good and a bit quirky like the story itself. Some of it really works for me but there’s also a few panels and moments that don’t quite land the way one would hope. King also handles colors along with Minimone while DC Hopkins handles the lettering. The visuals overall give the comic an “indie” sense, emphasizing not the detective aspect of it all but instead the oddity of the world itself.
Huge Detective #1 is an interesting start with enough of a mystery to those who enjoy detective stories to come back. Its world is a unique one with small details that make it stand out. Huge Detective #1 feels like an indie detective comic that mixes a murder mystery with just enough weird.
