Batman and Robin: Year One #2 answers some long asked questions

Batman and Robin: Year One #2

Dick Grayson is struggling to adjust to his new life as Bruce Wayne’s ward, with both Bruce’s rules and Batman’s training making his life difficult. But Dick is happy to remind Bruce that turnabout is fair play. Gotham’s newest crime boss, the General, continues to vie with Two-Face for control–but could an alliance benefit both of them and spell trouble for Batman and Robin? Batman and Robin: Year One #2 is another fantastic issue that evokes the classics.

Written by Mark Waid Batman and Robin: Year One #2 is another home run of an issue that delivers action, humor, and heart with a look that’s as crisp as the storytelling. Waid dives further into the early relationship between the dynamic duo, this time focusing a bit more on Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson. It also addresses a major talking point for years, isn’t it a bit odd for Wayne to be adopting these kids? Are they safe? How involved is Wayne? Through a reporter, we get questions asked and answers given about the oddity that is this unusual family. From Alfred’s role to how hands on Bruce is, the issue checks off the questions Gothamites would have, and so have readers for years. With it, we also get to see the seriousness of Bruce versus Dick’s playful behavior, extending the dynamic the two have when battling crime.

And we get to see some of that two as Dick trains with Bruce and Alfred we also see that his plan of attack and solution to problems is quite different than what Bruce would do as Batman. Waid emphasizes how similar as well as how different these two are. They both are “born” out of tragedy but the impact on their demeanor as well as how they approach life is totally different.

The art by Chris Samnee continues to amaze. With color by Samnee and Giovanna Niro and lettering by Samnee and Clayton Cowles, the comic is Samnee’s amazing style but also a little blend of what has come before. The comic feels like some of the other modern Batman classic like The Long Halloween. Part of that is due to the colors taken which gives a bit darker/muted look but at the same time not a “dark” look (if that makes sense). But, where Samnee’s art really shines is how the visuals emphasize the brightness that is Dick Grayson. Small details of him being a kid, like sticking out a tongue, the body language, the facial expressions, it all adds up to a kid who exudes a positive and bright feeling around him. It sticks out compared to the rather dour Bruce/Batman.

Batman and Robin: Year One #2 is another fantastic issue that continues to help cement this series as a modern classic. Two issues in and it feels like this is one that’ll be talked about and suggested as a “great Batman read” for years to come. Here’s hoping it can keep up the high quality for all of the issues to come.

Batman/Dylan Dog #1 delivers a flashy start with some style

Batman/Dylan Dog #1

Batman and Dylan Dog cross paths as two of their lethal nemeses, The Joker, the Clown Prince of Crime of Gotham City, and Professor Xabaras, have an unknown history! Batman/Dylan Dog #1 has Joker traveling to London to seal a hellish pact with Dylan Dog’s nemesis, the Mephistophelian Xabaras!

Written by Roberto Recchioni, Batman/Dylan Dog #1 features a European adventure as Batman heads to London chasing the Joker. Dylan Dog isn’t the most well known character and for me, this was an introduction. I know of the name, but that’s about it. So, it was interesting to read the comic to see how easy it is to figure out Batman’s latest team up. And thankfully, Batman/Dylan Dog #1 does an excellent job of welcoming new readers unfamiliar with the Nightmare Investigator.

To me, Dylan Dog is John Constantine without the magic. Recchioni presents a character who is charming and full of style but a massive whiff of bullshit is underneath it all. Broke, who knows where the next dollars are coming from, and a reputation that seems to be shaky, we get a protagonist who feels very pulp overall bringing Batman back to his adventure roots.

Batman/Dylan Dog #1 definitely has that roots feel. There’s a sense of old reels that you might watch before a film, with a story involving zombies and a sense of B-Movie fun about it all. The comic does a solid job in every aspect of the story, weaving in Dylan Dog and Batman’s worlds, introducing characters, setting up personality conflict, and delivering action. There’s just a lot of fun within the comic and that extends to the art.

Gigi Cavenago and Werther Dell’Edera team for the art with color by Gigi Cavenago and Giovanna Niro and lettering by Pat Brosseau. The comic looks fantastic and perfectly matches the tone of the writing. Everyone looks great and the comic has a style that feels like a blend of European comics and a traditional Batman comic. The Joker especially looks fantastic and the tone of the visuals just nails the pulp aspect of it. The comic is beautiful from the design of the characters to the colors, it’s just great overall and a visual treat.

Batman/Dylan Dog #1 is a hell of a start. The comic delivers two characters in Dylan Dog and Batman/Bruce Wayne that are so perfect together in a story that makes sense and doesn’t feel forced. It has a look and flair that is a throwback to pulp adventures and Batman team-ups of the 90s. It’s a fun comic that even readers unfamiliar with Dylan Dog can enjoy. A solid debut that has us already wanting more of this new dynamic duo.

Nemesis Reloaded #1 delivers a bloody fantastic reboot

Nemesis Reloaded #1

Nemesis Reloaded #1 opens not with a splash but a letter, an introduction from writer Mark Millar. Millar goes into his ideas and somewhat of where this series is going. The original Nemesis series was created by Millar and Steve McNiven debuting 13 years ago. I myself only remember the basics, an evil version of Batman, but do remember it being entertaining. Flash forward to today and much has changed. With Millar looking at the big picture of all his properties, it was time to bring back this villain all leading up to July’s event “Big Game” where every Millar character will cross over in a big summer event.

As Millar notes, much has changed since that original series debuted. The world has shifted in so many ways. It’s politics, it’s economics, the environment and health of its people. Millar has recognized that and uses all of the current unease to launch Nemesis Reloaded #1. Much like the original, the story focuses on a Batman like character who’s a villain. Who he is? What does he want? We don’t really know and it doesn’t really matter.

Millar provides a self-aware comic that both takes itself seriously and skewers itself too. A discussion at the beginning about Tarantino feels like it’s talking as much about the comic to come as it does the director and writer. Like Tarantino, Nemesis Reloaded #1 bathes in its absurdity and orgy of violence and blood. It’s over the top in all the right ways updated for today’s political and social climate.

Much of that is due to the art of Jorge Jiménez. With color by Giovanna Niro and lettering by Clem Robins, the visuals for the comic are so over the top it’s just fun. Limbs are cut off, bullets fly, death reigns. It’s all done in a way it’s hard to take seriously, instead you’re forced to site back and enjoy the dance of destruction. Everything clicks visually creating an action comic with visual comedic chops. Those moments are brought home by the visuals which nail the punchlines over and over.

Nemesis Reloaded #1 is the insane violence Mark Millar has delivered in the past. Everything is ramped up to 11 delivering a comic that feels like it is both taking itself seriously but also spoofing so much of what has come before. No matter, it’s a hell of a lot of fun and a welcome return after being missing for so long.
