Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell’s From Hell Gets a Master Edition Starting in September

For decades, the award-winning graphic novel From Hell has welcomed readers into the grandeur and grime of London in the late 1800s. Beginning in September, readers old and new will experience From Hell as never before. The From Hell Master Edition presents Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell’s Victorian masterpiece as a ten-issue serial, thoroughly restored and revised “for color, clarity, and continuity” by Eddie Campbell himself.

From Hell: Master Edition #1 (of 10) will be released exclusively through comic shops and digital retailers in September 2018.

The Story of My Tits

Jennifer Hayden (w & a & c)

When Jennifer Hayden was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 43, she realized that her tits told a story. Across a lifetime, they’d held so many meanings: hope and fear, pride and embarrassment, life and death. And then they were gone. Now, their story has become a way of understanding her story. Growing up flat-chested and highly aware of her inadequacies… heading off to college, where she “bloomed” in more ways than one… navigating adulthood between her mother’s mastectomy, her father’s mistress, and her musician boyfriend’s problems of his own—not to mention his sprawling family. Then the kids come along… As cancer strikes three different lives, some relationships crumble while others emerge even stronger, and this sarcastic child of the ‘70s finally finds a goddess she can believe in.

For everyone who’s faced cancer personally, or watched a loved one fight that battle, Hayden’s story is a much-needed breath of fresh air, an irresistible blend of sweetness and skepticism. Rich with both symbolism & humor, The Story of My Tits will leave you laughing, weeping, and feeling grateful for every day.

FX is developing From Hell

fromhell_cover_lgDeadline is reporting that FX is developing From Hell to be a television drama. The show would be based on the graphic noel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell. The graphic novel was adapted into a 2001 movie from 20th Century Fox and starred Johnny Depp and Robbie Coltrane. This would the another comic that went from comic to movie to television, Constantine currently on NBC would be the other.

Don Murphy, who produced the film, is executive producing. David Arata will write the adaptation.

From Hell tells the tale of Jack the Ripper with the killer himself as the main character. Detailing the events leading up to the Whitechapel killings and the cover-up that followed, the 572-page graphic novel is a meditation on the mind of a madman whose savagery and violence gave birth to the 20th century. It was also the inspiration from a recent sleuth who claims to have figured out the identity of the killer.

The film is very underrated, and one of the better comic to movie adaptations. The graphic novel itself is a favorite of mine, and well worth the read, especially due to its historic research.

This is the latest in what feels like dozens of comics currently in the process of being adapted for television.

Top Shelf joins Humble Bundle: Pay what you want for DRM-free WIZZYWIG, From Hell, and MARCH!

Facebook Fandom Spotlight: Comic Based Movies

It’s Monday and that means a brand new Facebook Fandom spotlight where I look at the statistic of Facebook users when it comes to some part of geek fandom. With so much buzz recently about comic book movies and casting, I thought it might be interesting to look at various comic-based movies and how they did individually and as a series when it comes to gender.

The first thing that stands out to me is that both Catwoman and Elektra have women as the majority of their “likes.” Men in Black as a franchise does well, but though it shows women as a majority, they are most likely just under 50% due to Facebook’s returning fuzzy results with large numbers such as this.

But, what also stands out is Superman Returns being split exactly 50/50 when it comes to men and women. Director Bryan Singer has spoken about how he wanted a movie that would appeal to women as well as men, and it looks like he achieved that according to these numbers.

Many movies on this list came out well before Facebook existed, but overall the results are interesting to me.

Constantine which will soon be a television series does shockingly well when it comes to gender, with 45% women, and the recently rumored Fantastic Four casting had me interested in those results, which was some of the worst when it came to women with 16.67% for the franchise.

Jeff Lemire Week at Canada Reads!

The time is fast approaching for the great Canada Reads book battle!

The competition (featuring Essex County as the first ever graphic novel selection) will determine the essential Canadian novel of the decade, and airs February 7, 8 and 9 on CBC Radio One.

In preparation, Canada Reads just celebrated Jeff Lemire Week! The celebration includes a video from Essex County‘s celebrity champion, indie rocker Sara Quin, testifying to her love of the book, an essay from Jeff explaining the genesis of Essex County and his feelings about revisiting that world, an interview with the great Toronto comic shop The Beguiling about what makes Essex County so great, an essay from CBC book blogger Brian Francis offering his opinion of the book’s strengths, and Sara’s appearance on the Canada Reads podcast to discuss her battle strategy!

Whew! By the way, all this interest in Essex County has sent us well into a new printing — which is in stock now, so by all means grab a copy of the book if you haven’t read it yet. And let’s all cheer Jeff, Sara, and Essex County in the on-air Canada Reads competition, February 7-9!

LUCILLE by Ludovic Debeurme

LUCILLE by Ludovic Debeurme

— $29.95 (US)
— 544-page deluxe softcover graphic novel with french flaps
— ISBN 978-1-60309-073-5

Winner of the René Goscinny Prize and the Angoulême Essential Award!

After years of acclaim in Europe, graphic novelist Ludovic Debeurme makes his English-language debut with a book of quiet grace and staggering emotional power.

This rich and intimate story follows two teenagers, Lucille and Arthur, as they struggle with the complex legacies inherited from their families: legacies of illness and pride, of despair and hope. Somehow two lonely misfits form an instant connection, and with the intoxicating boldness of youth, they journey together across Europe, discovering each other, discovering themselves, and hoping against all odds to make their own destiny.

Lucille is more than a story about anorexia, alcoholism, and adolescence. It’s a story of love amidst tragedy, full of the halting awkwardness of life and the operatic grandeur of teenage emotion.

LIAR’S KISS by Eric Skillman and Jhomar Soriano

— $14.95 (US)
— 120-page deluxe hardcover graphic novel
— ISBN 978-1-60309-070-4

Cynical and lazy, Nick Archer is a joke of a private detective — but considering the scam he’s pulling on a millionaire client, he’s laughing all the way to the bank. Once a week he sends Mr. Kincaid photographic proof that his lovely wife is faithful… leaving the rest of the week free to enjoy his dishonesty with Mrs. Kincaid.

But when the millionaire turns up dead, suddenly nobody’s laughing. Kincaid’s cheating wife is the prime suspect, and now it’s up to Nick to clear her name. But he’s in way over his head, and with the police closing in, Nick’s digging up secrets that might be better off buried…

Eric Skillman’s writing debut is a fresh spin on classic noir tropes, with intricate plotting, dialogue to die for, and charm to burn. Jhomar Soriano brings the tale to life with an elegant combination of bold chiaroscuro and gorgeous ink washes. Altogether, it’s an irresistable trip to the dark s
