Firefly: Bad Company #1

Attraction is a fickle thing, a spark that can turn into a fire. You may fall for someone that you never saw yourself being in a relationship with. Then there are people who you may have many things in common with, where it was an inevitability. Either way, you never see it coming and it hits you like a ton of bricks.

I’ve had a few relationship where it felt like a rollercoaster and others where it felt like a routine. Then there are those wild cards which make feel like they are nothing but trouble, yet you’re drawn to them like a moth to a flame. Those are the encounters that make you feel like you are alive. In the one shot, Firefly: Bad Company, fans everywhere finally get the backstory of everyone’s favorite bad girl, Saffron, the one Mal could not say no to.

We meet Saffron, as a teenager, where we see her in action, as a pickpocket, and also the reason for why she steals in the first place, her sick father. Everything changes one day when she gets caught by the Alliance Military, but she is saved from imprisonment by a Priestess of the Guild, like Inara.

Unfortunately for Saffron, her father dies, she ends up seeking refuge with the Guild, where she served and grew up around companions. After years of in service, she finally gets her revenge on the man who was responsible for her father’s death. By book’s end, we find out Saffron is more than she was in the show, a women comprised of many different motivations.

Overall, an engaging backstory of a character who made an impression on a legion of fans despite her abbreviated appearances. The story by Josh Lee Gordon is heart wrenching and enjoyable. The art by Dan McDaid, Marcelo Costa, and Diego Galindo is simply gorgeous. Altogether, an impressive origin that will both entice and satisfy the most hardcore Firefly fan.
