North Shore Comics Celebrates the Community’s Perseverance with Free Comics this May

North Shore Comics

On Saturday, May 1st, from 10:00AM to 3:00PM, North Shore Comics will celebrate its community. A special Free Comic Book Day event on this first Saturday in May will provide fun, adventure, and inspiration to heroes of all ages. Due to the effects of the coronavirus disease; last year’s industry wide, Free Comic Book Day global event was canceled. Additionally, the 2021 version of Free Comic Book Day — its 20th Anniversary — has been moved to August for this year only. This exclusive, local event may be the only one of its kind in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin on the traditional “First Saturday In May” date.

North Shore Comics (NSC) is proud to host their own Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) on the traditional “First Saturday In May” date this year. The store hopes children, teens, and adults will enjoy their large selection of brand new, free comic books specially created for this event by all major comic book publishers including Marvel Comics, DC Comics, and countless others. Social distancing will be practiced, a dedicated hand sanitizer station will be on site, and masks will be required as per local ordinance.

This event will utilize two store fronts. North Shore Comics proper will feature a Super Sale with 20% off all new and current comic books; 40% off all graphic novels, trade paperbacks, and hardcovers; a special selection of back issues for fifty cents each; and more.

Additionally, a second dedicated FCBD space will feature stacks of brand new FCBD titles in the NSC MiniComicCon room. In this special storefront, local talent, Onrie Kompan, author of the comic books “Marx: A Tale of Neglect” and “Yi Soon Shin: Warrior and Defender”, will have his work for sale and will be signing at no charge.

Online retailer, Most Good Hobby, will be selling their limited edition, exclusive variant comic book covers of popular publishers’ releases, including Marvel Comics and DC Comics. An out-of-state comic book dealer will also be setting up with possibly others to follow.

North Shore Comics has served greater Chicagoland since 1983; bringing comic books, graphic novels, games, and supplies to the local community. The current owner, Pete Hurst, has been operating NSC since 1993.

Kyle’s Little Sister

Story and Art by BonHyung Jeong

My name is Grace, not “Kyle’s little sister!”

Having a good-looking, friendly, outgoing older brother sucks—especially when you’re the total opposite, someone who likes staying home and playing video games. Your parents like him better (even if they deny it!), and everyone calls you “Kyle’s little sister” while looking disappointed that you’re not more like him. I was really hoping I’d get to go to a different middle school, but no such luck. At least I have my friends…until he finds a way to ruin that, too…! Argh! What do I have to do to get out of his shadow?!

Free Comic Book Day is scheduled to take place nationwide on August 14.

Lady Mechanika Finds a New Home at Image Starting in August

Image Comics has announced that the long-running, fan-favorite Steampunk adventure series—Lady Mechanika by Joe Benitez—has found a new home at the publisher. The adventure begins with an Image Comics FCBD 2021 edition of the first appearance of the character available at participating comic shops on Saturday, August 14 and then a new Lady Mechanika story launching this September from Image.

The entire backlist of Lady Mechanika will be made available from Image Comics too, beginning this August with the long-anticipated reprints of the volume one trade paperback and hardcover editions. These reprints will join a total of seven trade paperbacks and five hardcover editions of the beloved series.

In Lady Mechanika, readers follow a young woman during the Victorian Era who is desperately in search of the secrets to her past—a past that left her with extraordinary, but unnatural, mechanical limbs.

The FCBD 2021 edition of Lady Mechanika will include the stand-alone short story “The Demon of Satan’s Alley,” which first introduced Lady Mechanika and her steampunk world (Lady Mechanika #0)—plus a preview of “The Monster of the Ministry of Hell-th,” the newest story by series creator Joe Benitez which will debut this year at Image Comics.

Skottie Young Announced as Commemorative Artist for FCBD’s 20th Anniversary

Diamond Comic Distributors has revealed the commemorative artwork for Free Comic Book Day’s (FCBD) landmark 20th anniversary. Beloved artist and writer, Skottie Young, created a one-of-a-kind design emphasizing the power of imagination and the endless possibilities of comic storytelling. The design will serve as the commemorative t-shirt and poster for FCBD 2021.

Skottie Young illustrations are instantly recognizable. There’s a cartoonish exaggerated quality to his style that appeals to both the heart and the mind. For kids, it’s like seeing a Saturday morning cartoon on the page—full of energy and life, with humor bursting at the seams. To adults, there’s a depth of feeling, both passion and pathos. It’s little wonder, then, that Young has become one of the most acclaimed and sought-after artists of the last fifteen years. Winner of an Inkwell Award, Young is admired by both peers and fans alike. Whether illustrating Eric Shanower’s Oz adaptations for Marvel Comics, working on projects for Marvel such as Rocket Raccoon, illustrating unique, kid-friendly variant covers for Marvel’s biggest projects, unleashing his own twisted sense of humor in I Hate Fairyland from Image Comics, and writing stories such as Marvel’s Strange Academy and Image’s Bully Wars, a Skottie Young comic is always fun to read and beautiful to behold.

Comic books can take readers anywhere, from the big city to the small town, from the depths of the ocean to the depths of space, from the fantastical past to the unimaginable future. Comics do this by engaging the reader’s imagination through their unique combination of engaging prose and evocative illustrations. Free Comic Book celebrates the rich legacy of comic books this year and its own 20th anniversary with a special Commemorative Artist T-Shirt featuring art from the incomparable Skottie Young.

The FCBD 2021 Commemorative T-shirt will be available in men’s sizes small through XXXL (MSRP: $14.99-$17.99) in heather gray and blue, in women’s sizes small through XXL (MSRP: $14.99-$17.99) in heather gray and blue, and in youth sizes small through large (MSRP: $11.99) in blue and white. The shirt, along with a complete listing of all the FCBD 2021 comic book titles and exclusive collectibles, can be found in the April issue of the PREVIEWS catalog, available in comic shops on March 24, 2021.
