The final countdown!

Bloodshot was a bust… Divinity didn’t work… Ninjak was nixed… No matter which of the Valiant Universe’s greatest heroes she recruits to her aid, Faith still can’t save the time stream! With time literally running out all around her, does L.A.’s sky-soaring superhero have what it takes to defend the entire universe…or will the secret key to saving existence itself come from the most darkest and most unexplored avenue of all?

Eisner Award nominee Jody Houser (FAITH) is joined by Eisner Award-winning artist Cary Nord (X-O MANOWAR) to bring Valiant’s spectacular standalone event to an unfathomable finale…and when the clock reaches zero, no amount of time travel can ever undo the damage done!

Review: Faith And The Future Force #3

FAITH_FF_003_COVER-A_MOCK“Faith Herbert and Neela Sethi, the newest Timewalker, Neela Sethi’s first attempt at saving time from being unwritten has failed…which means it’s time to rewind the clocks and star— Wait, didn’t this happen already? No matter which heroes she recruits, Faith’s attempts at saving the time stream keep ending in disaster, throwing her in an endless loop of doomed missions! To break the cycle, Faith and Timewalker will have to call upon their strangest recruit yet for a last ditch effort to save the universe!”

As this story is all about time travel, why don’t we hop into the timestream ourselves, dear reader?

Full disclosure: if you didn’t read the last issue, you’ll be lost here. Don’t expect any of the following to make sense (and expect a few spoilers).

In the first issue of Faith And The Future Force, Jody Houser wove an intuitive story about time travel and effortlessly explains how Time Walking works within the Valiant Universe without spending pages and pages dedicated to something that could easily lose readers with its complexity.

Although the last few issues of the ongoing Faith failed to deliver on the promise shown earlier in the series, Jody Houser returns to the promise of those early issues. We’re also seeing Faith face an enemy that feels like a genuine threat, whilst simultaneously being light enough to not feel out of place in the series. It’s an odd dichotomy, but one that works very well.FFF_003_003

Diego Bernard with Juan Castro and Cary Nord with Brian Thies are on art duties here, and neither they nor colourist Ulises Arreola disappoint – indeed my only complaint is the watermark on the review copy kept me from being able to really appreciate the vibrancy of their work. Especially around the time doors.

Faith and the Future Force #3 is an interesting beast. If you read and enjoyed the first issues then this one is almost more of the same, so you should know exactly what to expect when you crack the cover.

As far as time travel style comics go, this is an enjoyable diversion from your daily life for however long it takes you to read it. If you’re in you’re LCS in the next couple of days and you see this and the first two issues there then take a chance on the series. Faith and the Future Force is a fun story that explores the intricacies of time travel and a hero’s willingness to save the world at any cost.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Alex

Top Pick: X-O Manowar #7 (Valiant) – I’ve literally just finished reading this for Graphic Policy’s review, and I cannot wait to get my hands on the physical copy from my LCS. That art is stoningly good!

Faith And The Future Force #3 (Valiant) – Time travel, humour and stubborn determination. Can Faith and the Future Force save the timestream? I hope not, because I don’t want this series to end!

War Mother #2 (Valiant) – It’s a Valiant book. Of course I’m looking forward to it.

Brett

Top Pick: Secret Coders Vol. 4 Robots & Repeats (First Second) – Always fantastic, this graphic novel series entertains and educates in how to code. The first three volumes have explained things well and taught me a ton. Add in a cute story and fun art and you’ve got the perfect combination of education and entertainment.

The American Way: Those Above and Below #3 (Vertigo/DC Comics) – Don’t think politics and entertainment go together? Read this series. Entertaining and thought provoking each series explores race relations, politics, and more. Most importantly, it entertains with each issue.

First Strike #4 (IDW Publishing) – Did you ever take your G.I. Joe and Transformers and have them battle it out when you were a kid? This even, is that and then some.

Marvel Legacy #1 (Marvel) – Kicking off the next phase of Marvel comics. We’re all intrigued as to what it will all mean.

Southern Bastards #18 (Image Comics) – One of the, if not the, best comic series on the shelves today. It feels like a bit since the previous issue but the series is no less the emotional gut punch and no time has passed at all.

Talking Comics – Faith and the Future Force #1

Review: Faith And The Future Force #1

FFF_001_COVER-B_KANO“Faith “Zephyr” Herbert – former member of Unity, current Harbinger Renegade, and Los Angeles’ #1 superhero – is the universe’s last, best chance at survival! Centuries from today, a devious artificial intelligence has unleashed a blistering attack on the very foundations of time…one that is unwriting history from beginning to end! Now, with her options exhausted, Neela Sethi, Timewalker – the self-appointed protector of what is and will be – has returned to the 21st century to recruit Earth’s greatest champions of today and tomorrow to oppose this existential threat…and she needs Faith to lead them! But why Faith? And why now?”

I was oddly impressed with the first issue of Faith and the Future Force. Not because of the art, which is impressive in its own right. What struck me most of all is the way that Jody Houser is weaves an intuitive story about time travel and effortlessly explains how the Timewalker method works within the Valiant Universe without spending pages and pages dedicated to something that could easily lose readers. And by doing this, she also asks the time old question of whether you would alter history if you could, and answers it, in an almost subtle throwaway exchange midway through the comic.

After the last few issues of Faith failed to deliver on the promise shown earlier in the series, I’ll admit to approaching this issue with some trepidation. But with Jody Houser returning to the fresh and exciting feeling of those early issues, coupled with what feels like a genuine threat – something that we haven’t really seen in some time – there was no need for any hesitancy on my end; this is one of the most enjoyable comics starring Faith that I’ve read in some time.

Stephen Segovia and Barry Kitson are on art duties here, and neither they nor colourist Ulises Arreola disappoint – indeed my only complaint is the watermark on the review copy kept me from being able to really appreciate the vibrancy of their work. Especially around the time doors.

Ultimately, this issue has everything you want in a good comic; it makes you genuinely think while providing enough humour and action that you may not even notice yourself doing so.  I hoped I’d enjoy Faith And The Future Force #1, but I didn’t think I’d enjoy it as much as I did.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Joe

Top Pick: Kill or Be Killed Vol. 2 TP (Image) – The fantastic crime thriller with a demon (yeah that’s right) keeps getting better. This is the second collected volume of the second arc that follows Dylan’s path into darkness.

Action Comics #984 (DC Comics) – You get a Superman! And you get a Supergirl! And you get a Super… Lex? This arc has been a blast. Take all of Supes’ big bad and put them against his super friends. It’s going down!

Black Hammer #11 (Dark Horse) – Lemire has been a writing machine as of late, and the quality hasn’t dipped. This is probably his best work, but that’s tough to say since he’s doing great work on a few series now.

Saga #45 (Image) – The best in the business keeps it interesting. Whether you read this book in single issue or trade, you’re always left on the edge of your seat. This is a truly special piece of art we are getting, and it’s going to go down as a classic.

Infamous Iron Man #10 (Marvel) – I was skeptical with this book for awhile, and have gone back and forth, but either way, I’ve still enjoyed almost every issue and loved Maleev’s beautiful art as well as the mystery Bendis is building with momma Doom.

Alex

Top Pick: X-O Manowar #5 (Valiant) – Without question the best looking comic right now, these issues never feel long enough – which for me is a good sign. If you’re even remotely curious as to Valiant’s comics, then this is a great place to start. Especially if you’re into what is essentially Conan mixed with Old Man Logan set in Star Wars.

Faith and the Future Force #1 (Valiant) – This is a bit of a cheat because I’ve already read this awesome issue. Time travel, a hero that loves comics and a brilliant blend of philosophically aware humour add up to a must (re)read for me on Wednesday.

Adam Wreck #2, Amazing Age #2, Croak #2, Lillith Dark #2 (Alterna) – So four entries in one? Because all four are a part of Alterna’s newsprint line and cost $1.50, and they’re all well worth every penny. Depending on what you’re looking for, there will be something for you among these issues – whether you pick one or all of them up, for the price the’re going for? You honestly can’t go wrong.

Brett

Top Pick: Tomboy #12 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – The mix of horror, manga, and teenage angst wraps up and if you haven’t read an issue you need to go back to the beginning. One of the best comics that’s under the radar.

All-Star Batman #12 (DC Comics) – This series has been knocking it out of the park and this latest arc which dives deeper into Alfred’s history has been an interesting one showing how you can layer on something new even with a series that has that much history.

Captain Canuck 2017 #1 (Chapterhouse Comics) – A reboot of the recently launched character. How it’ll differ? No idea, but I’m intrigued to see.

Heavenly Blues #1 (Scout Comics) – A really interesting concept involving the afterlife that had me entertained with the first issue and looking forward to the second. Basically, it’s a heist comic involving angels and demons.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #10 (Marvel) – This series has been knocking it out of the park with each issue and the fact that it revolves around a brand new character is even better. A prime example of how to expand the Star Wars universe and deliver something new.
