Hakim’s Odyssey is a three book graphic novel series about the true story of Hakim, a young Syrian who must leave everything behind due to the civil war. It’s an eye opening and touching start that has you cheering for Hakim to find safety and happiness.

The second book follows Hakim’s journey from Turkey to Greece as he must make a difficult choice to reunite his family.

Graphic Mundi Reveals Its Spring/Summer 2022 Releases

Graphic Mundi, the graphic novel imprint of Penn State University Press, has announced its new releases for Spring/Summer 2022. All titles will be distributed exclusively by Diamond Comic Distributors.

Hakim’s Odyssey, Book 2: From Turkey to Greece by Fabien Toulmé and translated by Hannah Chute is the second volume in a trilogy chronicling the journey of Hakim, a real-life Syrian refugee. In a starred review, Booklist called Book 1: From Syria to Turkey a “stupendous testimony of survival,” and Foreword Reviews called it “thrilling, contemplative, tragic, and inspirational.” Book 2 will release in March.

6,000 Miles to Freedom: Two Boys and Their Flight from the Taliban is a graphic novel by award-winning filmmaker Stéphane Marchetti and illustrator Cyrille Pomès, also translated by Hannah Chute. It tells the story, inspired by true refugee testimonies, of a pair of teenagers who undergo a harrowing trek from Afghanistan to Europe in an attempt to escape forced jihadism at home. It will release in April.

6,000 Miles to Freedom: Two Boys and Their Flight from the Taliban

Joshua Kemble’s fictional graphic novel Jacob’s Apartment, a coming-of-age tale that explores grief, loss of faith, heartbreak, and ambition, will release in May. Kemble is a cohost of podcasts The Artcasters and Indie Review Show and the creator of the 2020 graphic novel Two Stories: Book One.

The Pass, a companion to Espé’s critically acclaimed The Parakeet, continues protagonist Bastien’s story as he faces the threat of losing his son Louis to a rare heart condition, even while grief touches his family in other ways. The Parakeet was called “spectacular” by Booklist and received multiple starred reviews. The Pass, translated by J. T. Mahany, releases in June.

MK Czerwiec’s critically acclaimed graphic novels join Graphic Mundi

Graphic Mundi, the recently launched graphic novel imprint of Penn State University Press, is the new home for Taking Turns: Stories from HIV/AIDS Care Unit 371 and Menopause: A Comic Treatment, both by Graphic Medicine luminary MK Czerwiec. The Graphic Mundi edition of Taking Turns, with a new cover and updated foreword by Czerwiec, and the new edition of the Eisner-winning anthology Menopause will both be released in November. Both titles will be distributed exclusively by Diamond Comic Distributors.

Taking Turns: Stories from HIV/AIDS Care Unit 371, originally published as part of Penn State University Press’s Graphic Medicine series in 2017, is a firsthand account of caregiving in Illinois Masonic Medical Center’s HIV/AIDS Care Unit 371 in the 1990s—a pivotal time in the history of AIDS. It received rave reviews in Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, Booklist, The Advocate, and other publications and was cited by Rebecca Makkai as source material for The Great Believers, her award-winning novel. Menopause: A Comic Treatment, published in 2020, was awarded the 2021 Will Eisner Comic Industry Award for Best Anthology, and Mimi Pond’s “When the Menopausal Carnival Comes to Town,” one of the comics contained in the anthology, was awarded Best Short Story. It was also named a Best Graphic Novel of 2020 by the New York Times, whose columnist Hillary Chute called it “eclectic and often humorous,” and listed among the 2020 Top Ten Best Graphic Novels for Adults by Booklist.

Additional Fall 2021 releases from Graphic Mundi are Hakim’s Odyssey, Book 1: From Syria to Turkey by Fabien Toulmé (November); A Chance by Cristina Durán and Miguel Giner Bou (November); Iranian Love Stories by Jane Deuxard and Deloupy (December); and BrainComix by Jean-François Marmion and Monsieur B (December).

Graphic Mundi Inks an Exclusive Distribution Deal with Diamond

Diamond Comic Distributors has announced that it has signed a distribution agreement with Penn State University Press to be the exclusive distributor of their Graphic Mundi imprint to comic book specialty markets in North America. Diamond was also awarded the rights to exclusively distribute Graphic Mundi titles to the North American book market under the banner of Diamond Book Distributors.

Graphic Mundi publishes nonfiction and fiction graphic narratives for adults and young adults on topics such as health and human rights, politics, the environments, and science and technology, created by people from diverse backgrounds. An imprint of Penn State University Press, Graphic Mundi expands on the list of critically acclaimed graphic novels published in the Press’s Graphic Medicine series, which launched in 2015 with the Eisner Award–nominated Graphic Medicine Manifesto.

Graphic Mundi launched in Spring 2021 with COVID Chronicles: A Comics Anthology, edited by Kendra Boileau, publisher of the imprint, and Rich Johnson, founder of Brick Road Media, LLC. The collection contains more than sixty short comics from a diverse set of creators, including indie powerhouses, mainstream artists, and Ignatz and Eisner Award winners. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (BINC) to support the employees of bookstores and comic shops and brick-and-mortar stores affected by the pandemic. Forthcoming titles from the imprint include an English translation of Hakim’s Odyssey, Book 1: From Syria to Turkey, the first volume of Fabien Toulme’s award-winning nonfiction trilogy about a successful young Syrian forced to upend his life and become a refugee, and A Chance by Cristina Durán and Miguel Giner Bou, which chronicles the creators’ struggles and triumphs as they build a family in the face of tremendous odds.
