artist: Keith Burns
cover: Tim Bradstreet
FC l 152 pages l $19.99 l Mature

Cody Pomeray had a gift for looking inside a person’s soul with just a glance. This ability served him well, as the crook blew through the early 1980s, finding marks and picking them clean. But one fateful night, he targeted the wrong man… and was sentenced to the most savage prison in California. Pomeray would have been beaten to death on his first day if not for the intervention of Barnaby Creed, the most powerful crime lord in the Southland. Now five years later, Pomeray’s out on parole, robbed of his special ability, and tasked with doing Creed “a little favor.” He has no idea he’s just stepped into a long con, and this time… he’s the mark.

When you’re sitting next to a blonde ladykiller and you’ve got a dead body in the trunk and you’re violating your parole big-time, there’s only one way to go, hombre: south of the border. But you can’t sit in a cheap Mexican resort slamming tequila and watching Chinese tourists square dance all night long. You’ve got to deliver that body to the one shady man who can hide it forever. Problem is, it looks like the garbage man is sizing you up for a grave of your own! If you thought Cody Pomeray tripped into his own personal hell in the first three issues of EX-CON, you’re not going to believe where he ends up next…

Cody Pomeray’s violated his parole. He’s cuffed and headed back to the place he dreads the most — the slammer. He’s dead if he shows up without having completed a little “errand” for a vicious crime boss. But then Cody is given just 48 hours to set things right — and he has no choice but to join forces with his ex-girlfriend to track down an arsonist hiding somewhere along the California coast.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Once Cody Pomeray had L.A.’s elite eating out of his hand; now he’s sucking grime from the bottom of their pools. But that’s just his parole gig. His real job? Sneaking away from the watchful eye of Quemando – his hot parole officer – and scouring the bars of Venice Beach with to find an arsonist who’s been torching pads all over town. Then Cody walks into the wrong condo, and dreams of freedom pretty much go up in smoke.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Death_of_Wolverine_1_CoverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in! Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.

Pick of the Week: Death of Wolverine #1 (Marvel) -Its been months of teasing and build up, but we’re finally at the point where Wolverine (may) die. I’m still not sure if this isn’t more of a philosophical death than physical, but we will see courtesy of Charles Soule and Steve McNiven.

A1 Presents: Carpe Diem Vol. 1: I Hate Mondays (Titan Comics) – If you caught the short stories in the previous A1 Presents releases, you’ll know how hilarious and entertaining this comic is. If you missed that, here’s your chance to find out!

Cloaks #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A street illusionist entertains folks with his magic, but also steals from corrupt Wall Street bankers with it too. Still a somewhat timely subject, it’ll be interesting to see how the comic handles the continuing political issue.

The Death-Defying Dr. Mirage #1 (Valiant) – Valiant has one of the best comic universes out there right now, and this new Dr. Mirage finally gets the spotlight in this four issue mini-series.

Ex Con #1 (Dynamite) – Duane Swierczynski’s creator driven comic from Dynamite.

Kill My Mother (Liverlight) – Veteran cartoonist Jules Feiffer combines dizzyingly good pictures with a bizarre tale.

Lumberjanes #5 (BOOM! Studios/BOOM! Box) – One of the best, and most fun comics on the market right now. And it doesn’t hurt it’s one of the most diverse group of characters too.

The Names #1 (Vertigo) -A new 8 issue series from Peter Milligan and Vertigo. It’s a dark, contemporary thriller set in the world of Big Money: hedge funds, leveraged buyouts, market raids, flash crashes. High-end finance that can ruin entire economies, run by a cabal of the world’s richest (and sickest) people.

Original Sin #8 (Marvel) – Marvel’s summer event wraps up. There should be some ramifications for things going forward after this ends.

She-Hulk #8 (Marvel) -One of Marvel’s best comics on the market. It perfectly mixes humor, action, and She-Hulk trying to live a normal life.

SDCC 2013: Duane Swierczynski Explores Life on the Outside in Ex-Con

DynamiteCrimeLogoDynamite is welcoming Duane Swierczynski as the latest high-profile writer to contribute to their growing Crime Line of comic books, with an all-new thriller called Ex-Con.  This announcement arrives in conjunction with the writer’s appearance at San Diego Comic-Con as a Special Guest of the show.

The premise of Ex-Con fits perfectly alongside Dynamite’s current roster of hard-hitting Crime Line titles, Red Team (by Garth Ennis and Craig Cermak) and Uncanny (by Andy Diggle and Aaron Campbell).

As the name implies, the series will be following a jailbird freshly sprung from San Quentin after five brutal years. This is a high-level con artist who thought he could out-think the cops, his marks, his competitors — pretty much everybody — and five years later, he’s still reeling.  To stay alive inside, he had to promise a favor to a convict who’s pretty much a living nightmare in a cage, and now that our man is out, he dreads having to pay up.

Swierczynski also hints at a twist in the storytelling.  ”

There’s also a psychological angle to Ex-Con that I don’t want to spoil quite yet, but it’s something to do with neurology, and you’re going to see it on the very first page of the conflict.  I love crime stories with unreliable narrators… but our guy is unreliable in a completely different way.  I’m hoping readers of my crime novels (like Fun & Games and The Wheelman) will feel right at home with Ex-Con.  Likewise, I hope comic fans who have followed me through series like Punisher, Judge Dredd, and X will give this a shot, too.

Tim Bradstreet will provide cover artwork for the Ex-Con series.
