Review: Evil Ernie: Godeater #5

The Godeater has defeated the Hosts of Heaven, the Armies of Hell, and the warriors of Valhalla. The end of all things is here, unless Ernie can destroy something that can’t be destroyed. It’s the fearsome finale to Justin Jordan’s Chaos Comics epic… and perhaps the most senses-shattering event in Ernest Fairchild’s un-life! Meanwhile, our “Last Ditch Bitch” back-up series comes to its explosive conclusion, as Chastity and Mistress Hel throw down over the fate of singer Liv Halvorsen!

Victory always comes at a price, and Evil Ernie: Godeater #5, the final issue, fulfills that well. The issue forces Ernie to do the unthinkable if they are to survive the Godeater. Even if the plan for victory is a little odd in its nature. The back-up story reaches its own gory end as well.

Like the other issues in this run, the art is stunning and visceral. It layers in a lot of contrast in both the characters and the background. The dual artists also manages to give a clear distinction of stories in the process.

Hell has gone to hell with the arrival of the Godeater, and Ernie has one last chance to stop it before it’s too late: he has to bring Heaven down to the pits! Justin Jordan, fan-favorite writer of The Strange Case of Luther Strode, continues his mind-blowing Chaos Comics epic! Meanwhile, in Chapter Four of our “Last Ditch Bitch” back-up story: How do you save death metal rocker Liv Halvorsen from the goddess Mistress Hel? Special guest star Chastity wrestles with the dilemma… while fighting tooth and nail against the Dead Onez!

The gods of old realize they must unite if they wish to survive the Godeater. The alliance is uneasy and Ernie is caught in the center of it. He’s forced to lead the army of the undead against the Godeater using the power of Hel. It seems like writers Justin Jordan and Keith Davidsen have saved the best for last with only one issue remaining.

Like the previous issues, the art is by Colton Worley and Cezar Razek is stunning and almost sublime. I will admit the Norman Rockwell influenced cover is a nice touch for this fan favorite Chaos comics creation. It feels like a blanket hiding the dark tale that lurks within its pages.

Review: Evil Ernie: Godeater #2

Superstar writer Justin Jordan revels in the mayhem and madness of an Apocalypse on Earth… and beyond! Heaven and Hell unite on Earth as Ernie and his counterpart from Heaven, The Host, try to stop the Godeater from rising. Meanwhile, in the back-up feature: the lead singer of metal band Last Ditch Bitch discovers her link to Mistress Hel… and the Dead Onez go berserk!

In Evil Ernie: Godeater #2 the origin of the Godeater is revealed. The incorporation of various mythologies by Jordan into its origin makes me wonder how much is yet to be revealed. Given how it ends, I doubt the wait will be long. The backup feature tale is interesting and has a few surprises up its sleeve.

As they reveal the origin of the Godeater there is a lot of mythology incorporated into it all. Some are obvious like the brief scene of a dead Odin and the Egyptian dressed gods. Others are little more subtle in nature. I’m curious to see if they add more mythological elements as the story continues.

Something bad is coming. Something that could kill Heaven and Hell and the Earth itself: The Godeater. And the only thing standing its way is… Evil Ernie? We’re probably all screwed. Dynamite Entertainment proudly welcomes Justin Jordan, the Harvey Award-winning writer of such horror hits as The Strange Talent of Luther Strode and Shadowman, as he debuts the all-new “Godeater” storyline, an event so epic in scope, it promises to shake the very foundations of the Chaos! universe!

The undead antihero Evil Ernie returns in Evil Ernie: Godeater #1 from writer Justin Jordan and Keith Davidsen. This time, Ernie is stuck in a place between heaven, hell, and Earth as sentries for the mysterious Godeater attempt to find him. One thing seems clear, they want the life-force of Evil Ernie.  Stranger still, Evil Ernie is saved by his own literal guardian angel. Whaaa!?

I will admit the art by Colton Worley and Cezar Razek is stunning and creepy at the same time. Despite the creepiness there is an odd lightness to the world. Allowing a solid contrast between good, evil, and the unknown.
