Celebrating Shakespeare Day, Joe Quesada and Amazing Comics Announce Undiscover’d, A New Line of Comic Books Based on the Plays of the Bard

Timed to Shakespeare Day, legendary comic book writer, artist, and former Editor-in-Chief and Chief Creative Officer at Marvel Entertainment Joe Quesada has announced Undiscover’d, a new line of comic books co-created by Quesada and Charles Dorfman from Amazing Comics based on the timeless works of the Bard. Each title reimagines a specific Shakespeare play through a new genre and setting—while preserving the original character names and core themes. All stories will unfold in a version of our world—familiar, yet reimagined through the lens of genre, time, and imagination.

Disciple

Undiscover’d’s’ inaugural title, Disciple, will be a dramatic reimagining of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, co-written by Quesada and Charles Dorfman, the writer and director of Barbarians and producer of the Oscar-nominated The Lost Daughter. Dorfman will be making his comics debut with the series illustrated by Quesada and inker Wade von Grawbadger, with colorist Richard Isanove and letterer Joe CaramagnaThe comic was originally announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2024.

Amazing Comics is a collaboration between Quesada, Mad Cave Studios, and European publishing house Dupuis. The three companies will work in tandem to publish and distribute titles on both sides of the Atlantic. 

Amazing Comics will feature comic books written by some of the biggest names in the entertainment and comic book industries, including: 

  • Derek Kolstad, the writer and creator of John Wick and Nobody;
  • J. Michael Straczynski, the creator of Babylon 5, co-writer of the TV series Sence8, screenwriter of Clint Eastwood’s Changeling and the MCU Thor film; 
  • Steven Paul Judd, the writer on Dark Winds and Echo television shows; 
  • Christopher Priest, legendary writer of Black Panther and Deadpool for Marvel Comics;
  • Garth Ennis, writer and co-creator of The Boys and Preacher comic books;
  • Ethan Sacks, writer of Star Wars for Marvel Comics and co-writer of the acclaimed Image Comics series A Haunted Girl; 
  • Charles Dorfman, writer and director of Barbarians, and producer of the Oscar-nominated The Lost Daughter.

Upcoming Amazing Comics will be illustrated by all-star artists, including Quesada himself, as well as:

  • Esad Ribic, artist on Marvel’s Secret Wars, Silver Surfer: Requiem, X-Men and Thor for Marvel Comics;
  • Ryan Stegman, artist on Venom, The King in Black, X-Men, Vanish, and Missionary
  • Ronan Toulhoat, artist of the immensely popular European albums Daemon and Dog Head

The Mad Cave Studios super-secret news has been revealed in San Diego at Comic-Con International: Amazing Comics, a.k.a. Idaho’s #1 comic book company!

Since 2014, Mad Cave Studios has steadily carved out a reputation for bold storytelling, creator-focused comics, and boundary-pushing ideas. Now in its tenth year, the Miami-based publisher is thrilled to announce their groundbreaking partnership with premier European publishing house, Dupuis, to fully realize the worldwide publishing aspirations of Amazing Comics, a thrilling new venture from legendary American comic book artist, writer, and editor Joe Quesada

Amazing Comics is an international comics imprint, creating original concepts for an international market. From Quesada’s headquarters in Idaho, this one-of-a-kind venture will attract the greatest talent from across the globe to create stories of universal appeal, with Mad Cave Studios and Dupuis working in tandem to publish and distribute fascinating new titles on either side of the Atlantic. The inaugural title, Disciple, by co-writer and artist Joe Quesada, co-writer Charles Dorfman, inker Wade von Grawbadger, colorist Richard Isanove, and letterer Joe Caramagna, includes a unique and captivating reimagining of Shakespeare’s Hamlet that blends classic literature with modern storytelling. The title debuts today with Disciple: Quarto, an exclusive San Diego Comic-Con preview comic, with more information about this exciting project to be revealed in the coming months.

Purr Evil by Mirka Andolfo and Laura Braga launches in July!

Harvey Award winning superstar Mirka Andolfo and fan-favorite illustrator Laura Braga team up for the first time to bring Purr Evil to life! Purr Evil will launch from Image Comics this July in the United States, and will be released simultaneously in Italy (Star Comics), France and Belgium (Dupuis), and Spain, Argentina, and Chile (Moztros).

Purr Evil is The Last of Us meets Hit-Girl and Léon: The Professional in a six-issue miniseries with high-adrenaline content, and is a new adventure comic produced by Arancia Studio, the Italian creative atelier which worked on Andolfo’s bestselling Image Comics titles and many successful books.

The story will explore an unusual mother-daughter relationship, seasoned with horror and urban fantasy elements. Can the bond of the two women overcome a life built on blood and lies? What secret is lurking in the Morando family’s apartment? 

Purr Evil tells the story of Rita, a young mother forced by the mistakes of her dark past to become a ruthless, cold-blooded killer, in order to defend her daughter Deb from the endless evil that looms over her. In a world on the brink of doom, the unconditional love between mother and daughter must overcome every barrier and every misunderstanding alongside blood, sweat, tears, and a tremendous lot of malevolent kittens.

Reginald Hudlin will helm Black Cotton Star

Black Cotton Star is the latest comic to turn film as ZQ Entertainment has acquired the rights. Reginald Hudlin will direct the film from a script by Deric Hughes and Benjamin Raab. Hudlin will produce with Prime Universe’s Adrian Askarieh, and ZQ heads Ara Keshishian and Petr Jakl. Martin J Barab will be exec producer.

Black Cotton Star tells the story of three African American soldiers in World War II who are sent on a suicide mission to retrieve the first ever American flag which was stolen by a Nazi Commander. The graphic novel was written by Yves Sente with art by Steve Cuzor. Both will executive produce.

Black Cotton Star was published by the Belgian publisher Dupuis and in the US by Pegasus Books with Europe Comics handling digital publishing.

Karmen Gets a Cover from Milo Manara

The highly anticipated U.S. edition of Karmen by bestselling writer and artist Guillem March will showcase a dreamy variant cover by lauded artist Milo Manara. Originally published by Dupuis in Belgium as a graphic novel, Karmen will be reproduced and introduced to U.S. audiences in single-issue periodical format this March from Image Comics.

Karmen is a provocative story that explores grief, suicide, and redemption told as a visual feast-for-the-eyes and featuring ethereal, fantastic artwork to set the tone.

Punctuated with humor, Karmen is the story of Catalina, a recent suicide, who is taken under the wing of the strange and quirky angel, Karmen, on a journey of discovery and reflection. 

Catalina’s story is one packed with surprises and metaphysics, tenderness and humor, and dives deep into the topics that matter and brought to life by the creator behind the acclaimed Monika (Titan Comics) and The Dream (Europe Comics).

Guillem March’s Karmen is out in March 2021 from Image Comics

Image Comics will bring the unique, lushly illustrated fantasy Karmen by bestselling writer and artist Guillem March stateside this March. Originally published by Dupuis in Belgium as a graphic novel, Karmen will be translated and introduced to U.S. audiences in single-issue periodical format, with five issues.
