Wanted: Dead Or Alive! A First Look At Duke #3

Skybound, Image Comics, and Hasbro have revealed new interior pages and variant covers for Duke #3 from writer Joshua Williamson, artist Tom Reilly, and colorist Jordie Bellaire. The latest issue of the Energon Universe’s acclaimed new limited series arrives in comic book shops on February 28, 2024.

Codename: G.I. JOE continues! Duke’s search for answers has led him to a classified holding site for the America’s most dangerous prisoners including the enigmatic Baroness. Now he’s the most wanted man in the world. Unfortunately, everyone seems to prefer him DEAD over ALIVE.

  • Duke #3 Cover B by Declan Shalvey (Lunar Code 1223IM272)

Duke #2 Continues with Plenty of Action and Intrigue

Duke #2

Desperate to reveal the government coverup of the alien robot incident, Conrad “Duke” Hauser now sits on the government’s most wanted. Desperate and bloody, Duke turns to the only ally he has left to help him expose the truth and reveal what he experienced. Yet, he might find help from a mysterious person who could either help or betray him equally.

Joshua Williamson and Tom Reilly’s Duke #2 continues Duke’s adventures and further the strong worldbuilding of the new Energon-connected universe. Considering my previous lack of background knowledge of G.I. Joe, Williamson does an excellent job of making the miniseries welcoming to new and old fans alike. I never felt lost nor out of touch with the ways previous canon and characters become remixed for the presentation of the new iteration. Also, the introduction of iconic characters never comes across as winking and nodding to the reader but in a more natural manner without taking me out of the story. More impressively lies in how the world feels lived in, and the characters already have formed relationships and histories. The more minor touches and character interactions hit at past stories and deepen what exists in this universe. What could have easily been a simple rehash of what came before, Williamson dives deep into the canon and takes unexpected twists and turns for the reader’s enjoyment.

Tom Reilly’s art demonstrates again why it compliments Williamson’s writing so well. Reilly’s retro and pulpy style captures the espionage and science-fiction tone of the miniseries. The clean-cut line art and strong paneling convey the suspense and action essential to the narrative. In addition, his utilization of sound effects within the art and even in the background adds to the pulpy fun. Reilly balances that line of vintage aesthetic with a modern and stylish flair. Jordie Bellaire’s colors strengthen Reilly’s already incredible art and reflect the work of classic adventure comics. Rus Wooten’s lettering completes this gorgeous issue as it matches the action by switching between round and spiked word balloons along with bolding specific words. Duke #2 fills that void of those looking for expertly drawn comic book art combined with engaging action in a comic.

Duke #2 further demonstrates the fertile potential of the Energon Universe and the longevity within it. I am highly impressed with Williamson and Reilly showcasing beloved characters in new light and circumstances, as nothing truly feels untouchable to the universe. The pair enormously respect the material but never let it prevent them from charting into new territories. Before this, I would not have considered myself a G.I. Joe fan, but now I understand why the brand has lasted so long. Duke #2 continues the strong streak from the other titles of the Energon Universe, making each release feel essential. Considering where the latest issue lands, the team demonstrates the vast possibilities of where Duke and the series can go and might end up. There is still a way to go before the iconic G.I. Joe team forms, but the pair is making the journey incredibly worthwhile.

Wolverine #42

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Alan Scott: The Green Lantern #4 (DC Comics) – The series continues to be a great blend of fact and fiction all mixed into some solid entertainment.

Charred Remains #2 (Mad Cave Studios) – The first issue was interesting having to do with a mysterious being and fires.

Conan the Barbarian #7 (Titan Comics) – The series has been fantastic so far evoking classic Conan with some beautiful art.

Dark Ride #10 (Skybound) – Absolutely great, and entertaining, horror, with some solid art. We get excited for each new issue.

Dead X-Men #1 (Marvel) – We’re intrigued about this one that has to do with some “dead” X-Men. With Krakoa in shambles, we’re pondering how it all comes together.

The Devil That Wears My Face #4 (Mad Cave Studios) – The concept of the Exorcist meets Face/Off might seem silly but this comic rocks. Fantastic action and horror mixed together.

Duke #2 (Skybound) – The first issue gave a shot in the arm to G.I. Joe and added more energy to the Energon Universe.

Jill and the Killers #1 (Oni Press) – Oni is launching a bunch of new series in 2024 and this one sounds like a cool mix of murder mystery and games.

Lilo & Stitch #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – The beloved animated film comes to comics! Dynamite has been knocking it out of the park with their Disney releases.

Local Man #9 (Image Comics) – The series has been fantastic delivering a vibe that’s a mix of modern and classic Image superhero comics.

Moon Man #1 (Image Comics) – Kyle Higgins, Marco Locati, and Kid Cudi team up for this series about “missing minutes” during a moon mission.

Somna #2 (DSTLRY) – Becky Cloonan and Tula Lotay’s first issue featured some amazing art and we’re expecting more of that in a series set amidst the terrifying backdrop of the witch hunts in a quiet 1600s English village.

Wolverine #42 (Marvel) – The first issue was brutal and we expect nothing less from this.

Duke #1 kicks off a new exciting era for G.I. Joe

Duke #1

Conrad Hauser has made first contact with an alien being…or was it a UFO? Was it both? But no one, not even Colonel Hawk, will believe the story of the jet fighter converting into a colossal alien robot that nearly killed the man known as Duke. Now, one of the US Army’s most decorated officers is on the hunt for answers, drawn into a conflict that no amount of training could ever prepare him for. A war that only a real American hero has any chance of surviving… Duke #1 kicks off a new era for the classic character setting up a new future for the force that will be known as G.I. Joe.

Written by Joshua Williamson, Duke #1 is a hell of a new take on characters who have been around for decades. G.I. Joe doesn’t exist. Cobra doesn’t really exist. But, giant robots who transform into vehicles do. And that’s the driver. Duke, during a flight, has come across these giant robots and is on a mission to try to figure out what’s going on.

Williamson puts Duke on the run from multiple groups as Duke #1 takes more from the X-Files than it does traditional G.I. Joe, and in that way, it soars. The debut feels fresh, new, interesting, and perfect for our era of paranoia and conspiracy theories.

But, Williamson keeps the focus on G.I. Joe’s eventual enemies in Cobra with teases and hints that long time fans of the franchise will appreciate. Familiar characters, and even some obscure ones, are hinted at or directly front and center. It all comes together for a great blend of new and familiar.

Williamson also keeps it all grounded. The idea of aliens and giant robots aren’t front and center. Instead, Duke is focused on a new weapon that seems like it’d upend things and stumbles upon something greater. The conspiracy is one built in a reality that makes sense, where a soldier might go with what he witnessed. It keeps the fantastical in a realistic setting.

The art by Tom Reilly is fantastic. The comic features solid takes and characters who have been around for so long. With color by Jordie Bellaire and lettering by Rus Wooton, the comic feels a bit traditional in its style but also a little updated. There’s slight updates and tweaks, like the Transformers comic itself, that makes the look of the series its own. And already, I want plastic incarnations of some of the characters. Reilly’s style also helps enhance the conspiracy/X-Files style of it all emphasizing a man on the run who’s attempting to discover the truth.

Duke #1 is another hell of a start for the “Energon Universe.” As part of Transformers and Void Rivals, the trio of comics set up pillars for what’s to come, each with their own voice but all tied into each other in ways that don’t feel forced. A solid start that hopefully delivers an update to a classic property and keeps it going for another 40 years.
