As a kid growing up in the 1980s, I was a witness to some of the most iconic television shows of all time. This was a time that featured some of the best action shows to be on television. I grew up watching Knight Rider and A-Team, which definitely made for must watch television every week in my household. Then there was Sledge Hammer which was an excellent riff on all those cop shows I grew up watching. It balanced comedy and action in equal breath with a little more panache than the Naked Gun movies. In much the same spirit, we find another police detective who will find justice by whatever means in the comic series Doberman.
We meet Frank Doberano AKA Doberman, one of the best cops in Los Angeles, until one night during a stakeout, one mistake leads to his partner being killed, and him quitting the force. Years later, we find that he retired to the woods in Canada, where he gets back in the spotlight, when he breaks up a prostitute ring and catches the eye of his old boss, who lets him know that the man who killed his partner, is now free. As he start over as a patrol officer, he is partnered up with a guy fresh out of the academy, while wreaking havoc across the city and finding evidence to put the man who killed his partner away for good.
Overall, a comic that is nothing but dumb fun in the same vein of all those 80s action movies. The story by Jack Lambert, Scott Marder, and Rob Rosell is funny, action packed and dripping with machismo. The art by Brandon McKinney, Zac Atkinson, and Bernard Chang is breathtaking. Altogether, a excellent book that gives fans all that imbecilic dialogue with guns a blazing, making for a fun read.

New characters include the gamecock queen Miss Egghead, Cuban secret serviceman Wunbrow, the tragic Headache, and bizarre Popsie and her mother. Throw in a wacko named Pantsy, a cross-country chase after a million dollars of hidden heist loot, Tracy left for dead on a deserted island, a couple more million in slot machine coins, and a throwback to the 1940s in the Mole-lookalike named Rhodent, and it’s clear that Chester Gould is definitely not resting on his laurels. Includes all strips from December 15, 1957 through July 11, 1959.

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in! Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.
Pick of the Week: United States of Murder Inc. #4 (Marvel/Icon) – Valentine and Jagger are on the run as the five families meet to decide the fate of the United States of Murder Inc. The alternate world story where the mob controls large parts of the United States has been a fun, and gripping read.
Armor Hunters #3 (Valiant Entertainment) – Valiant has one of the best universes out there, and their current Armor Hunters storyline has been fantastic. It’s still not too late to get in on a great comic company.
Doberman #2 (Darby Pop Publishing/IDW Publishing) – 80s cheesy cop movies come to comics. Hilarious, and nostalgic at the same time.
The F1rst Hero #1 (Action Lab Entertainment) – A new series from Action Lab has a world where people with super powers just begin to emerge. The first issue is fantastic, both as an introduction to this world, and also a one and done comic.
Genius #2 (Top Cow Productions) – I liked the first issue when I read it four years ago, and have been waiting for the second issue to hit. A nice spin on the idea of gangs in America.
Skullkickers #30 (Image Comics) – A stand alone issue before the next arc begins. Skullkickers is entertaining fantasy, and every issue is fantastic.
Starlight #5 (Image Comics) – Mark Millar’s Flash Gordon homage has been damn near perfect with each issue. Fun, entertaining, and pays tribute to classic pulp fun.
Transformers: Primacy #1 (IDW Publishing) – Some more Transformers history filling in the gaps of the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons. The story is solid and art beautiful to look at.
The Walking Dead #130 (Skybound) – If you caught the end of last issue, how can you not want to read this one!?
Wolverine #11 (Marvel) – Marvel has big plans coming for Wolverine, and this is leading up to all of that.
The epic story of Borderlands continues in part one of the new series, where fans find out what happens after Roland, Mordecai, Lilith, and Brick step out of Marcus’s bus. As soon as they arrive in the once-prosperous town of Fyrestone, they realize that Pandora is a far more dangerous planet than they first imagined. The Vault Hunters will go up against a ruthless bandit known as “Nine Toes,” but will they be able to overcome him?
Jack Lambert, Scott Marder and Rob Rosell (w) • Brandon McKinney (a) • Bernard Chang (c)

Top Pick: Black Market #1 (BOOM! Studios) – BOOM! latest property is courtesy of the talented Frank Barbiere and Victor Santos. The cure for all disease is within the blood of superheroes, the problem is, how do you go about getting it? A very interesting new twist to the genre.
Aphrodite IX/Cyber Force #1(Top Cow) -Top Cow brings together the two franchises after their recent reboots.
Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Seconds (Random House) -This is O’Malley’s first project after his massively successful Scott Pilgrim series. That alone makes this graphic novel worth checking out. The world is curious as to what to expect.
The Devilers #1 (Dynamite) – Joshua Hale Fialkov’s creator owned series for Dynamite takes on religion, demons, etc. An interesting first issue that feels like it’s out of a horror movie.
Doberman #1 (Darby Pop Publishing/IDW Publishing) – There’s certain types of movies I loved in the 80s, and the over powerful he-man cop is one. If the movie Cobra was a comic, it’d probably be this.
Life With Archie #36(Archie Comics) – It made massive news. Archie Andrews dies in this issue protecting a friend from a bullet. The curiosity alone gets this one to make the list.
Ms. Marvel #6 (Marvel) – One of Marvel’s best series features a brand new character with a voice unlike any other in comics. The story, the art, just beyond fantastic, and one of the best debuts this year.
She-Hulk #6(Marvel) – Each issue has been fantastic, following the lawyer superhero She-Hulk as she attempts to build a practice and do the things a green skinned hulk would do.
The Wicked + The Divine #2 (Image Comics) -Kieron Gillen’s fascinating new series about gods coming to Earth.
Wildfire #2(Top Cow) – Matt Hawkins explores the idea of genetically modified organisms in this all-too-real series.
DOES THE WORLD NEED G.I. JOE? Cobra had become an international peacekeeping force… and the future of G.I. JOE looks bleak. SCARLETT leads what’s left of America’s ultimate fighting force—but will she be able to keep hew team together? Real-world action and politics collide… and nothing will be the same.

Will Eisner’s Spirit, Vol. 2: Artist’s Edition HC
Will Eisner (w & a & c)
Will Eisner’s work on The Spirit was, in its way, as groundbreaking as Orson Welles‘ Citizen Kane. Both artistic achievements rewrote the book on sequential storytelling, and had lasting impacts on all that followed them. Last Year IDW Publishing released Volume One of Will Eisner’s Spirit Artist’s Edition to universal acclaim (including being nominated for, appropriately enough, an EISNER award). Volume two will contain stories from the same glorious post-war period of 1946 – 1950, along with some of the very best from Eisner’s run. If you are a fan of the first book (or are kicking yourself for missing it), make sure you don’t get caught short—it just doesn’t get any better than this!

The second book in IDW Publishing’s new series of Parker novels, for the first time in a deluxe hardcover format!
Written by Richard Stark (A.K.A. Donald Westlake, the much-acclaimed mystery and crime author), and with illustrations by Darwyn Cooke, the multi-Eisner Award-winning creator of the Parker series of graphic novels. The Man With the Getaway Face starts off where The Hunter finishes—Parker faced off against the crime syndicate known as The Outfit. By reclaiming what was taken from him, in true Parker style, he now has some serious enemies who will be looking for him… the kind of enemies that don’t forget, and never forgive. But the methodical Parker—as always—has a plan; he arranges to have his face altered. Once this is sorted, with little more than a glance in a mirror, Parker is off to his next score. But complications arise that could mean his new identity is exposed. A classic crime novel by the master of the craft!
Illustrating the action are 10 full color paintings by Darwyn Cooke, the incomparable artist of the Parker series of graphic novels. Cooke also lends his considerable graphic design talents to defining the look of the book, from layout to typography—producing a definitive version of Stark’s classic novels.
