Red Hulk, from unleashing a devastating tear across the globe after his takeover of Latveria. The shocking storyline sees Captain America, desperate to make his way back to Earth, forced to work with Doctor Doom to escape from a place he never imagined he’d find himself in…

Avengers: Armageddon Changes the Face of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

The last year of Marvel Comics storytelling, particularly the events of One World Under Doom and Chip Zdarsky’s Captain America, have been leading to a watershed moment in Avengers history. That turning point arrives this June in Avengers: Armageddon, a five-issue event series from Zdarsky, the superstar writer known for his defining and Eisner-nominated work on Daredevil, and Frank Alpizar and Delio Diaz, the artist duo behind Doomed 2099 and recent issues of Captain America.

Following key buildup in Captain America and Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon, Avengers: Armageddon leads to a transformative shakeup of the team—the likes of which haven’t been felt since Avengers: Disassembled. The saga begins in Latveria where Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, A.K.A. Red Hulk, claims Doom’s homeland for himself, igniting a global conflict. When the Avengers assemble against him, explosive escalations will force them to unleash a power that changes how the world views their mightiest heroes forever. This pivotal chapter will lead directly into a new era of Avengers starting later this year.

ARMAGEDDON HAS ARRIVED!

Red Hulk’s devastating tear across the globe must be stopped…but it will take a colossal gathering of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to do it! Calling in the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Wolverine and more…but who will survive this super-powered cataclysm?! The Road to Armageddon continues in Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #2 and Captain America #8

Armageddon, the next Marvel Comics event, launches this summer, but the exciting stories leading into it are happening right now! Fans can peek ahead at two key Armageddon chapters hitting stands in March with the reveal of Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #2 and Captain America #8.

Armageddon will be written by writer Chip Zdarsky, who is currently laying pivotal groundwork for the event in his acclaimed Captain America run with artists Valerio Schiti, Delio Diaz, and Frank Alpizar. Zdarsky, along with artist Luca Maresca, will also set up the event in Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon, a four-issue prelude series spinning out of recent developments in Captain America and Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion.

The lead-in to Armageddon kicks into high gear in Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #2! Dark, shared secrets linking Wolverine, the relentless Nuke and the mysterious Dave Colton surface, throwing Logan’s hunt for a missing Super-Soldier into total disarray! Can Logan survive when the ghosts of his past are armed and ready for war? Get ready for a brutal saga you won’t forget!

THE HUNT FOR SALVATION ON THE ROAD TO ARMAGEDDON! In Captain America #8, Cap has formed an alliance with the LATVERIAN LIBERATORS to put a stop to violent insurgent leader SALVATION and his domineering TRUE LATVERIA army. But Salvation won’t back down without a fight, and Steve is determined to bring him to justice even in the face of resistance from his own team. As allegiances shift, can Steve free Latveria from Salvation’s grip once and for all?

Just in time for the new arc kicking off in Captain America #6 that marks the debut of the ALL-NEW S.H.I.E.L.D., fans can pick up all-new printings of the first five issues of Captain America next month!

S.H.I.E.L.D. Returns in Captain America #6!

Last week at the Lucca Comics & Games festival, Marvel Comics Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski and writer Chip Zdarsky shed light on the next arc of Captain America, one of the industry’s hottest new titles! Kicking off in issue #6 this January, the upcoming storyline will set a new status quo for Steve Rogers and the wider Marvel Universe with a moment that’s been anticipated for years…THE RETURN OF S.H.I.E.L.D.!

Drawn by series artist Valerio Schiti along with guest artists Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar, the new Captain America arc will bring the run to present day and be a key chapter in the buildup to next summer’s Armageddon, a new comic book event series also written by Zdarsky. In the aftermath of One World Under Doom, Captain America will find himself on the frontlines defending the future of Latveria against a resurfaced threat from the series’ opening arc, as well as outside forces including an ALL-NEW S.H.I.E.L.D., the iconic covert organization not seen since it was dissolved in 2017’s Secret Empire.

Doom’s fall—and a violent incursion by Thunderbolt Ross—have brought Latveria to the brink of civil war! Captain America deploys to protect civilians and investigate rumors of a weapons stockpile, but when Nick Fury Jr.’s unpredictable new version of S.H.I.E.L.D. joins the mission, it becomes clear that everyone wants a piece of Latveria—no matter the cost.

With warring factions tearing the country apart and a squad of unconventional S.H.I.E.L.D. agents pursuing unknown agendas, can Captain America hope to bring peace to Latveria? And is that even what his own handlers want?

Smaller, leaner, and more underground than its predecessor, the re-formed S.H.I.E.L.D. includes an eclectic group of agents: Joe Ramos, an altruistic soldier from Brooklyn; Charles Castlemore, a retired Marine with strong opinions about the Latverian resistance; Trevor Tambling, a soldier of fortune with unclear motives; and Red Widow, a former Russian agent abandoned by her home country for her questionable loyalty. Nick Fury must keep these soldiers in line as they carry out their secret task to retrieve Doom’s weapons—even if it means clashing with Cap!

See S.H.I.E.L.D. in action in Valerio Schiti’s new cover for Captain America #6 and #7, along with new original design sheets, and check out a new promotional variant cover by Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar.

Doomed 2009 #1 Attempts to Prevent Future Disaster

Doomed 2009 #1

The Future is Doomed! The world is Doom’s…but does that include the world that is yet to be? A coalition from the future – including OLD MAN LOGAN, RACHEL SUMMERS PHOENIX, BISHOP, COSMIC GHOST RIDER, THE MAESTRO and DEATHLOK say otherwise. But will the arrival of Doom 2099 change the odds for the new Sorcerer Supreme? Is he there to back his past self…or destroy him forever? Doomed 2009 #1 delivers a one-shot that shows one possible future to come.

When it comes to the Marvel Universe and futures, it’s best to not think about it. There’s so many options, so many possibilities, at this point, it feels like one giant “What if.” But, when it came to possible futures, I enjoyed the 2099 line when it first came out, introducing new takes on classic character or teams. It’s been decades since I read them but I still have my copies of Doom 2099 and have itched to go back and read them. Doomed 2009 #1 has me wanting to do that even more.

Written by Frank Tieri, Doomed 2009 #1 has Doom 2099 travel back in time with a team to stop Sorcerer Supreme Doom. He wants to prevent some major event in the future that Doom causes, what that is, we don’t know until the very end. Tieri presents what is basically one giant fight issue with teases of fights that have come before.

The concept of Tieri’s entry isn’t all that new, it echoes what we saw with the Fantastic Four’s battle with Doom in the recent relaunch of their series. It is interesting in some ways to see how Doom of the present deals with the team from the future. Where the comic really nails it is the ending which eventually reveals what Doom 2099 is attempting to prevent. It takes what is an issue that’s one long battle and turns it into something a bit more melancholy. It adds a sadness to Doom 2099 making his attempt to stop Doom in the present a bit more noble.

The art by Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar is good. With color by Andrew Dalhouse and lettering by Travis Lanham, the comic packs a lot into its pages as the heroes battle it out with Doom. And, the comic changes things up smoothly. It starts as straight sci-fi going into a battle royale and then ending on a tragic note. Each section’s visuals really hone in on what it is and looks solid. The visuals too play off the more comedic moments Tieri throws in there and none of it feels out of place.

Doomed 2009 #1 is an entertaining read adding in an intriguing one-shot chapter into the story. It has me wanting to go back and re-read Doom 2099 and hoping we might get more of the character in the future. It’s not the most vital read for “One World Under Doom,” but one for hardcore fans of the 2099 line.
