Review: Death of Wolverine #4

death of wolverine 4It’s been leading up to this. Starting off with “3 Months to Die,” it all happens here, the death of Wolverine! The loss of Wolverine’s healing factor–all led to this, the single most important X-Men event of the decade. Logan has spent over a century being the best there is at what he does…but even the best fade away eventually. Over the years, Logan has been a warrior, a hero, a renegade, a samurai, a teacher—and so much more. But now, the greatest X-Men hero will play a role he’s never played before, dead hero.

While my overall thoughts on the Death of Wolverine are much more favorable than any individual issue (except the first), the final issue of the event miniseries is just… ok. This is very much the final issue of a four issue series, not much in actual story, as opposed to action, which is overflowing in. There’s a lot packed in here, setting up enough for Marvel to milk out of the many months (maybe years, we’ve heard 3) before the eventual return of Wolverine. There is something impressive here, in that writer Charles Soule adds much to the Weapon X mythos, while at the same time he closes a chapter on it as well.

The issue to me with the issue is while it’s very much filled with action, the actual death of Wolverine is anything but. Days since reading the issue, I’m still struggling to think exactly how I feel about his “death.” Is the fact it’s muted actually fitting for a warrior? Would going out in a blaze of glory, dying from a fatal wound, been better? Would flash forwarding years later to see him die of old age been the best? I can play what if? (and just did), but in the end that’s not what matters. Something here was missing, I just couldn’t put my finger on it. There’s poetry to the ending, but one that could use one more stanza.

What’s not missing is Steve McNiven‘s art which is its usual solid work. Throughout all four issues he has created amazing visuals, and this is no exception. There’s some quibbles I have, but to list those out would spoil the actual death itself.

The issues that came before had some fantastic commentary from writer and artist dissecting the issue, this one misses that, and if ever there needed to be some thought process it’s this. I’m not a fan of how Wolverine has “died,” but I’d love to know the thought process of how he went. I don’t know what I’d of done different in all honesty, but in the end the Death of Wolverine was a bit anticlimactic.

Story: Charles Soule Art: Steve McNiven
Story: 6.5 Art: 7.5 Overall: 6.75 Recommendation: Read

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

sleepy hollow 1 cover Phil NotoWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in! Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up. And this is a week that this list could easily be double the size.

Pick of the Week: Sleepy Hollow #1 (BOOM! Studios) – The hit television series comes to comics and we’re expecting some big things! We’re fans of the show, and to see it in comic form will help add to our weekly addiction. Here’s hoping we get a lot more Sleepy Hollow in our future.

Death of Wolverine #4 (Marvel) – This is it! Wolverine dies here! It’s been building for quite some time now, but Marvel kills off one of its biggest stars. We’re fully expecting him to come back at some point, and there’s many spin-off comics to come, so you’ll get your Wolverine fix for many more months…. until his eventual return.

Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor #1 (Titan Comics) – The newest Doctor gets his due in comic form. We’re looking forward to seeing how this Doctor’s personality comes off in comic form, and how those eyebrows are drawn!

Doomboy Vol. 1 (Magnetic Press) – An awesome graphic novel following a young boy who rocks! It’s an amazing musical fantasy that’s well worth your time and the read.

Evil Empire #6 (BOOM! Studios) -BOOM!’s epic hasn’t disappointed yet. It’s how that evil government turned evil, and every issue has had a twist and turn that has had our jaw on the floor. So good, especially for those who enjoy a little politics in their comics.

Lumberjanes #7 (BOOM! Studios/BOOM! Box) – One of the best comics out there. It features fun women at camp, and has an amazing group of talented women putting it all together. In other words, we need more of this.

Ms. Marvel #9 (Marvel) – Another example of something we need more of. An amazing mix of superhero and real life featuring a young Muslim girl. The art is fantastic, stories are entertaining, and the writing feels real and fresh. Again, we want more of this!

Prometheus: Fire and Stone #2 (Dark Horse) – Dark Horse is putting together an amazing interconnected series of comics set in the Alien/Prometheus/Predator universe, and though slow to start, once you realize what they’re doing, it’s quite amazing.

Skylanders #1 (IDW Publishing) – Based off of the popular video game, we’re expecting this to be one of the top selling comics of the year.

Uncle Grandpa #1 (BOOM! Studios/KaBOOM!) – At its core, Uncle Grandpa is a show about everyone’s magical uncle and grandpa who travels around the world in a mystical RV. Um, yeah…. sign us up!

Preview: Gone But Not Forgotten – a New Look at Death of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy #1!

From the ashes of Death of Wolverine comes a new beginning. Marvel has released a first look at Death of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy #1, the first issue in a blockbuster 7-issue limited series aiming to explore the gaping hole left in the Marvel Universe following the death of one of its most prominent super heroes. Written by superstar writer Charles Soule with art by Oliver Nome, this epic first issue, setting the stage for a world without Wolverine! Each issue of Death of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy features a hot new creative team made up of some of the industry’s brightest rising stars as they explore the unique solo adventures of X-23, Sabretooth, Daken, Lady Deathstrike and Mystique!

In an interview with Marvel.com, Soule said:

Think of the death of Wolverine as an inciting event, one thing that has seismic-level effects on the lives of a great deal of the Marvel Universe. We’ll start in Death of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy by examining those effects on people close to Wolverine, but over time, we’ll range far and wide to see what sort of black hole Logan’s death actually leaves.

With the mutant powerhouse now out of the picture, who or what will be left to pick up the pieces? Will Wolverine’s legacy be shaped by heroes who valiantly fought alongside him…or by the villains who he spent his whole life protecting the world against? The answers will be revealed this October when the Marvel Universe faces a world without Wolverine in Death of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy #1!
