Review: DC’s Year of the Villain #1

DC's Year of the Villain #1

Evil is winning! Lex Luthor and The Legion of Doom conspire with Cosmic Gods, bending mankind toward a dark destiny. Elsewhere, the scourge of Leviathan spreads unchecked, seizing power in every corner of the world. And all the while the Batman Who Laughs busies himself in the shadows, aligned with no one-yet with sinister plans for all.

The carnage starts here as the badguys take center stage in “The Year of the Villain,” the most treacherous event in DC Comics history. Some act with united goals, others with plans selfish and secret, every one of them on a monstrous collision course against Batman, Superman and the heroes of the DC Universe. And our heroes will fail us.

For just 25 cents, is there really any reason to not get this comic? Your only excuse is if you think it’ll be give away by your shop for Free Comic Book Day.

DC’s Year of the Villain is a teaser comic featuring three stories and lots of back material setting up major storylines either beginning or already started in various DC Comics. For 25 cents, there really isn’t much to quibble about when it comes to the price and what you get and each story has its strengths and weaknesses.

I myself have paid half attention as to what’s going on in the various series this comic touches upon and was able to follow pretty well what was being set up but overall I’m not sure how much this sampler (not sure if that’s the best description) will suck in a new reader as say a full story comic for Free Comic Book Day. If nothing else, it’s a solid marketing idea that more publishers should try and see how it does.

Doom” by writer Scott Snyder, artist Jim Cheung, colorist Tomeu Morey, and letterer Tom Napolitano focuses on the storyline building over in Justice League as Lex Luthor has been gathering is Legion of Doom.

The story is over the top in its brazen action delivering a Luthor that you have to wonder how he can ever go back to being the industrialist enemy of Superman in the future (though there’ll always be some way for that to happen). The visuals are amazing as Luthor lays out his vision of what must happen to Brainiac delivering an ending that’s shocking and unexpected.

Leviathan” by Brian Michael Bendis, artist Alex Maleev, and letterer Joshua Reed focuses on the ongoing Superman story that has a mysterious organization that’s taking on the “black-ops” like organizations that pervade the DC Universe. Focusing on Batgirl and Green Arrow, the story is interesting in what it hints at and where it eventually goes. Maleev’s art is the draw here and it makes me long for him to draw a Green Arrow series.

Justice” is the third story by writer James Tynion IV, Francis Manapul on art, and Tom Napolitano on lettering. This focus is on the Source Wall storyline that has taken the DC Universe in whole new directions with their cosmic end of things. It’s the end chapter of this trilogy of stories bringing them all together into something rather interesting.

This teaser comic is interesting in that each separate story is just ok but once it’s clear how each ties together it’s something so much more. There’s clearly a lot of thought being put into this upcoming year at DC and it shows within this comic. Not to mention the amount of extra material to get you more interested. The comic also acts as a guide as to what you should read next and what you might want to go back and read.

It’s hard to say overall how good this comic really is. It has me both interested and not in what’s coming and while each individual chapter is interesting none really have me excited for what’s next. Still, for only 25 cents it’s hard to argue to not get it.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

The Wrong Earth

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III #1 (DC Comics) – The first two volumes that brough together Batman and the Turtles were tons of fun and we’re excited to see where this new volume goes and what new adventures they can come up with.

Copra Vol. 1/Copra Vol. 3/Copra Vol. 5 (Image Comics) Copra is now with Image Comics and with new printings, it’ll be easier than ever to get a copy to check out. The series is an indie take on superhero comics and so worth it.

DCeased #1 (DC Comics) – This sounds like DC’s version of Marvel’s popular zombie stories and we’re good with that.

DC’s Year of the Villain #1 (DC Comics) – This is going to be an important issue as it sounds like it’ll set up the next year of DC Comics.

Descendent #1 (AfterShock) – A new series that revolves around secret government conspiracies, ancient cults, government corruption and the kidnapped son of a Senator. We’re in.

Fallen World #1 (Valiant Entertainment) – A new trip to the future of the Valiant universe focusing on Rai and Bloodshot. Valiant always delivers and this is no exception.

Five Years #1 (Abstract Studios) – Weaving many of the strands of the “Terryverse” into one epic saga we’re there for any series by Terry Moore.

Hashtag Danger #1 (AHOY Comics) – A dysfunctional scientific team taking on lost civilizations and supernatural threats. Sound familiar? AHOY is an amazing publisher having fun with comic tropes and have delivered with every issue and series. Plus you get tons of extras!

Spencer and Locke 2 #1 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – The second volume of the twisted take on Calvin and Hobbes set in Sin City expands the homage as they take on a familiar enemy who’s a bit like Beetle Baily.

Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale (DC Comics/DC Ink) – We’re here to support this initiative of graphic novels aimed at younger readers! Check it out on Free Comic Book Day too!

War of the Realms #3 (Marvel) – Marvel’s event has been epic but uneven but we want to see what’s next in a pass the popcorn and turn off our brain sort of way.

The Wrong Earth Vol. 1 (AHOY Comics) – If you missed this series, you have no excuse now. It’s a spoof, homage, and love letter to superhero comics, especially Batman.

DC’s Year of the Villain #1 Ups the Summer Heat

Comic book fans know that Summer can bring the occasional heat wave, but DC plans to keep it hot all Summer long and into the fall as more details are revealed about DC’S Year of the Villain #1, the $0.25 one-shot that hits comic book shops May 1 and sets the stage for several major story arcs by some of DC’s most celebrated writers and artists.

JUSTICE LEAGUE

In DC’s Year of the Villain #1 written by Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV with art by Jim Cheung, Lex Luthor has decided once and for all that heroism is a false dream and for man to ascend to his place in the universe, he must embrace his basest, most evil instincts. But this means making an incredible sacrifice to achieve his goal and gain the support of Perpetua, the first being to be imprisoned within the Source Wall, now freed from the events of Dark Nights: Metal.

Beginning with June’s issue #25, Luthor’s plans begin to crystalize in a “prelude” story co-written by Snyder and Tynion with art by Javi Fernandez. In July, he makes “The Offer” to some of the DC Universe’s most noteworthy characters; he alone holds the key to them realizing their full potential. This kicks off an epic event taking over 2019, setting the stage for an all-out clash between the forces of Justice and Doom:

  • July –  Year of the Villain: The Offer
  • August – Year of the Villain: Dark Gifts
  • September – Year of the Villain: Evil Unleashed
  • October – Year of the Villain: Doom Rising

Luthor’s influence spreads across the DCU with a select number of titles carrying a themed “Year of the Villain” banner featuring a haunting image of a Lex Luthor that’s more than he used to be. In addition, certain July issues will receive special “portrait” variant covers featuring characters to whom “Apex Lex” makes the ultimate offer. These covers will be printed on cardstock with minimal trade dress, presenting the art in a bold, dynamic setting and carry an increased cover price ($1 extra) over the standard version.

ACTION COMICS/EVENT LEVIATHAN

Beginning with the “Leviathan Rises” storyline in Action Comics #1007, Brian Michael Bendis and Steve Epting continue to explore the DCU’s clandestine world of espionage and terrorism. The organization known as Leviathan continues to remove competitors from the playing field while its ultimate purpose (and the person behind it) remains unknown.

In DC’s Year of the Villain #1, Batgirl and Green Arrow dive further into this mystery in a story featuring a moody style reminiscent of a spy thriller (courtesy of artist Alex Maleev), where offers are made and suspicions about the identity of Leviathan are raised. Fans can follow the ongoing mystery in Action Comics #1010 (April 24), #1011 (May 11) and Superman: Leviathan Rising Special #1 (May 29) before the DCU’s greatest sleuths and detectives join forces to thwart this full-blown threat as the six-issue event Leviathan miniseries begins on June 12.

BATMAN: CITY OF BANE

It’s going to be a long hot summer for the Dark Knight as well, courtesy of Tom King and Tony S. Daniel as “City of Bane” begins Batman #75, on sale July 17. This extra-sized anniversary issue kicks off a new multi-part storyline tying together all the threads of the first 74 issues of Tom King’s epic Batman run.

Bane’s minions have moved into Gotham City, taken control and rule with an iron fist; and they aren’t above rounding up any rogue villains that aren’t ready to get with the program. Meanwhile Batman is nowhere to be found – at least not the Batman that anyone knows. And if Gotham City is already under Bane’s thumb, what kind of offer can Lex Luthor make him, and will he accept?

DC’s Year of the Villain #1 is a specially priced $0.25, 32-page one shot available Wednesday, May 1 and is a great kickoff to Free Comic Book Day Saturday, May 4.

DC is Forever Evil as 2019 is the Year of the Villain

DC Comics is taking advantage of Free Comic Book Day by releasing DC’s Year of the Villain on Wednesday, May 1 for only 25 cents. DC’S Year of the Villain spotlights several of DC’s most infamous super-villains, in stories written by celebrated authors Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, and Brian Michael Bendis

The 32-page comic will feature art from Eisner Award-winning illustrator Alex Maleev, Jim Cheung, and Francis Manapul, with an original cover by acclaimed artist Greg Capullo. Hardcore fans will also want to contact their local comics retailer right away to check availability of any one of three beautiful variant covers by Maleev (Lex Luthor) and Cheung (the Batman Who Laughs), as well as popular cover artist Stanley “Artgerm” Lau (the Cheetah).

Following the events of Snyder and Tynion’s Justice League, Lex Luthor takes a major step forward,  assembling his Legion of Doom for the final push to replace Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the rest of the League as the rightful leaders of not only mankind, but the universe itself, hoping to harness the power of Perpetua, the first being to be imprisoned within the Source Wall, now newly freed in the events of Justice League Annual #1. Perpetua’s storyline and Luthor’s plans to rid the universe of heroes will continue to escalate throughout the rest of 2019.

Snyder continues this plague of villainy through his fan-favorite character the Batman Who Laughs. Fans should pay close attention to the current six-issue miniseries, as the events of the final issue will continue to play out in this pre-FCBD issue, leading into a master plan revealed in a to-be-announced new series debuting this summer.

Fans of Superman and Action Comics will also have plenty to look forward to in this issue, particularly those following the “Leviathan Rising” story arc beginning with issue #1007. Bendis and Maleev will kick off a new status quo in DC’s dark world of espionage and terrorism; the repercussions of this new order will have major ramifications for the Man of Steel this Summer.

And in case you thought the Dark Knight would be getting off easy, guess again: DC’S Year of the Villain will also contain clues to Batman’s upcoming battle with the villains of Gotham in “City of Bane,” also slated to begin this summer.
