Time Waits #1 is an entertaining start that’s part Timecop and part Terminator

Meet Blue, a man trapped in the past, which is our present. Sent back in time for a mission he could not bring himself to complete, the former soldier Blue builds a life with Grace, the Sheriff of a small rural town. The pair build a foundation of happiness on a history of bloodshed, as far away from the trigger-happy corporate overlords that used Blue as a human gun. After ten years together, Blue and Grace are on the cusp of taking the next step in their relationship: adoption. Before Grace can fully convince Blue to expand their family, the future comes calling. The overlords want their first deserter and to complete the mission Blue could not. They have one simple rule: kill anyone who stands in their way.

Time Waits as Chip Zdarsky launches the first of four new titles at DSTLRY

DSTLRY has announced the Time Waits, a white-knuckle sci-fi series that spans time and space. Time Waits unites writer Chip Zdarsky and co-writer David Brothers with artist Marcus To, colorist Matt Wilson, and letterer Ariana Maher for the tale of a corporate mercenary from a dystopian future pursued by his former overseers in the past. Time Waits #1 will be on sale later this summer in print and digital.

This project marks the first of four series by Chip Zdarsky for DSTLRY.

Time Waits revolves around Blue, a time-traveling soldier of fortune who abandons his war and finds asylum in a small rural town nestled in his timeline’s distant past—our present. After Blue falls in love with the local sheriff, Grace, the couple builds a life of gardening and domestic tranquility. But just as Blue and Grace debate expanding their family through adoption, Blue’s former corporate lords from the future locate the deserter and send soldiers to ruthlessly reclaim their property and the secret he’s been hiding.

Each issue of Time Waits is presented in DSTLRY’s perfect-bound Prestige format, featuring wraparound covers with spot gloss on robust cover stock, complemented by 48 pages of exquisite interior stock.

All-Negro Comics commemorates 75 years with a Prestige Hardcover

All-Negro Comics

75 years ago journalist Orrin C. Evans led a talented team of cartoonists to create All-Negro Comics #1, the first comic book anthology of original Black characters created by Black talent with the express purpose of entertaining while rejecting harmful stereotypes and pushing boundaries in the industry. All-Negro Comics #1 returns via Kickstarter, with an archival reprint of the landmark artifact in sequential storytelling history, along with new stories by Black creators.

All-Negro Comics #1 was released in 1947, only eight years after Action Comics #1, six years after Captain America #1, and a whole 19 years before Black Panther hit the pages of Fantastic FourAll-Negro Comics #1 should be among those revered moments in comic book history, but the original print run was quickly removed from newsstands, and in the present day, Superman and Black Panther are recognized everywhere while All-Negro Comics is a factoid that cannot be easily found or read.

Chris Robinson has assembled an incredible team of current creators to help. Multi-award-winning illustrator Tony Washington has digitally remastered the complete Golden Age comic, while new stories are contributed by Deron Bennett, David Brothers, Jasmine Hatcher, Ryan Marlow, Sharean Morishita, Shawn Pryor, and Zipporah B. Smith.

The All-Negro Comics 75th Anniversary Edition is an 88-page hardcover with brand new prose and comics, featuring the All-Negro Comics characters, by notable Black creators of today and new essays that provide historical and cultural context.

Robinson also aims to make this hardcover available to communities everywhere through schools, libraries, and detention centers through multiple pledge tiers – a unique opportunity with this Kickstarter campaign. There are several ways to receive the book:  $20 for a digital PDF, $35 for hardcover, and a $50 pledge secures two copies in a “1 for you, 1 for them” initiative – one copy for the purchaser and one which the campaign team will donate to a community reading center with a bonus teaching guide. The top tier is a $75 pledge for an exclusive illustrated dust jacket, hand-numbered and signed by the contemporary creators plus a standard hardcover donated to a community reading center. Retailers will also have the opportunity for a bundle discount. A special $45 bundle includes the anniversary hardcover plus Fearless Future vol. 1 and vol. 2., two rare sci-fi anthologies featuring the early work of some of today’s brightest creators like Declan Shalvey, Ricardo Lopez-Ortiz, Paulina Ganucheau, Derek Fridolfs, Kendall Goode, Sebastian Girner, Ian Herring, and many more!

Review: Ghost Cage #1

Ghost Cage #1

In Ghost Cage, when his megacorp power plant falls under attack by terrorists, the super-scientist who revolutionized and controls all energy on Earth sends his ultimate creation (and an adequate employee) in to destroy his most monstrous secrets. Ghost Cage #1 is a unique debut that feels like it owes its existence to the manga that came before it.

Written by Nick Dragotta and Caleb Goellner, Ghost Cage #1 is an intriguing start of a series that’ll have you scratching your head for part of it. We’re slowly introduced to this world and rather odd situation that feels like it’s a side story to Dragotta and Hickman’s East of West.

It’s kind of hard to describe Ghost Cage #1. It’s story and vibe has bits that feels like manga mixed together with Aeon Flux and some Shadow of Colossus. In its video game roots, player 1, whose name becomes an ongoing joke, is “armed” with a rather mysterious being who then battles large bosses. It’s a visual treat. It makes absolutely no sense at all.

There’s something to the comic and it’s use of a lonely office drone as a way to cover up the corporate secrets of upper management. But, it’s not quite clear if this is on purpose and one of the underlying themes of the comic or a coincidence.

Each moment feels like chance to show off Dragotta’s artistic talents. With lettering by Rus Wooton, Ghost Cage #1 is visually fantastic. If you’re a fan of Dragotta’s work, you won’t be disappointed at all as the designs and visuals are exactly what you’d expect from a comic drawn by him. The designs are brilliant and really nail down the crazy sci-fi world. The comic is fantastic for the visuals which help drive the story and help make some sense of the actual story.

Ghost Cage #1 feels like the plot of a video game whose visuals are the main driver of entertainment. The plot makes a little more sense the more you read the comic but the overall plot is a bit… out there. Why do these secrets need to be destroyed this way? Why wasn’t there planning before? What the hell is going on in the battles!? Sit back, turn your brain off and enjoy the visuals.
