Dark Spaces: Wildfire #5 (IDW Publishing) – The series has been amazing and such a unique concept of a heist set in a forest fire. The art has been at times jaw dropping.

DC vs. Vampires #11 (DC Comics) – We’ll keep repeating it but the series has blown past our expectations and kept us at the edge of our seat.

Eight Billion Genies #6 (Image Comics) – The series has been amazing being able to fit in so many concepts and ideas and make it all work. But, it’s the characters in the crazy world that’s the real draw.

Fear of a Red Planet #1 (AfterShock) – The sheriff on Mars must deal with the murder of someone everyone hates.

Frank Miller’s Ronin Book Two #1 (Frank Miller Presents) – It’s been a long time since we read the original but Miller returning to comics the way he is and launching this has us intrigued.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #300 (IDW Publishing) – A final special oversized issue as G.I. Joe ends its time at IDW. Hopefully, this isn’t the end of Larry Hama’s writing for the series no matter where it winds up.

Kamen Rider: Zero One #1 (Titan Comics) – We’re not too familiar with Kamen Rider but we’re excited to check this out. The covers and art look awesome!

Once Upon a Time at the End of the World #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A new apocalyptic series but it’s a trilogy with each issue featuring 30 pages of story that spans a lifetime. An interesting concept from writer Jason Aaron and rotating group of artists.

Parker Girls #3 (Abstract Studio) – The series has been a lot of fun mixing action and humor, exactly what we’d expect from creator Terry Moor.

Star Wars: Revelations #1 (Marvel) – The issue teases what’s to come for Marvel’s Star Wars line of comics!

Daredevil #3 (Marvel) – The next arc for Daredevil has been interesting so far. Is this a heel turn? What’s going on as he and Elektra look like they’re clashing with the Hand again!

Dark Spaces: Wildfire #3 (IDW Publishing) – This tale of firefighters turned heist has been a solid story and amazing art.

Do a Powerbomb #4 (Image Comics) – The series’ family drama is even more high flying than the wrestling moves depicted on the page.

Ducks (Drawn & Quarterly) – Kate Beaton tells the story of her time during the Alberta oil rush.

Least We Can Do #1 (Image Comics) – A story of discovering what is right and what love means in a military-occupied and socially oppressed United Kingdom. Read our early review!

Midnight Suns #1 (Marvel) – A tie-in to the anticipated video game.

Samurai Doggy #2 (AfterShock) – An interesting spin on the western genre set in a future apocalypse and a humanoid dog seeking revenge.

Star Trek: Lower Decks #1 (IDW Publishing) – The animated series spins out into a comic series!

There’s Something Wrong with Patrick Todd #3 (AfterShock) – A kid with psychic powers is being pursued by a mysterious murderer who might be his father? Plus the police.

Review: Dark Spaces: Wildfire #2

Dark Spaces: Wildfire #2

The first issue of this series blew me away. The concept was fresh, the art was amazing. It was a complete package and one of this year’s best debuts. Dark Spaces: Wildfire #2 does it again continuing an amazing story matched by wonderful art resulting in a second issue that keeps readers tense with the events within.

Written by Scott Snyder, the series follows a group of convicts who are also a part of a firefighting unit. This is a thing that exists and there’s a long list of reasons it’s an abusive practice. Snyder taps into that with a very capable team but one that sees the inequalities and abuse they receive from society as a whole.

In the appropriately titled chapter “Ignition,” the heist is underway as the team begins their mission and plan to rob a horrible person whose home is in the path of the fire. There’s a lot of discussion of “F.U.” which in this case means “flare-up”. It’s a lot of foreshadowing and a bit obvious that the “F.U.” Snyder hints at isn’t a flare-up at all so as a reader we continually look for where that “F.U.” might take place. We know it’s coming, Snyder shows his hand. But even doing that, there’s still a tension that something is going to happen, we just don’t know what. And when we get there, it’s both expected and unexpected.

The story is fantastic but again, the art shines. Hayden Sherman’s layouts and pencils, the color by Ronda Pattison, and lettering by Andworld Design come together for an issue that’s beautiful to look at. Sherman’s layouts continue to impress with an almost dreamlike feel at times. There’s so much extra visual detail added to the comic that goes beyond Snyder’s words. Pattison’s colors too add so much from the yellows and reds of the fire to blues and pinks. Like the debut issue, the art is beautiful.

Dark Spaces: Wildfire #2 is a hell of a second issue for one of the freshest series of the year. A unique concept with amazing art creates a reading experience that’s a must.
