The concept of a vampire story set in MAGA country to me sounds interesting and the potential for interesting commentary. Unfortunately, beyond a few bigoted characters Dark Red #1 doesn’t deliver much that’s new or interesting.

Written by Tim Seeley, Dark Red #1 introduces us to Chip and lets us know we’re in a “deep red” area by the locals who lament about the Democrats shutting down the refinery and how the Mexicans took their jobs. Rightwing bingo also gets a square when large cities are described as “not real America.” Seeley could be going somewhere with it, and I hope he does, but the first issue as presented comes off as a vampire story set in Republican country and that’s it.

There’s some interesting aspects such as how Chip gets his blood but the comic falls into tropes of vampires battling vampires to a point you can almost see where it goes. When there’s opportunity to explore the exploitation of individuals who live in this area, or how reality has been warped for them, or how they’re forgotten, the comic doesn’t do much at all to deliver on what makes it stand out. There’s some dancing around some of that but the comic never commits to it falling back on a typical vampire story.

The art by Corin Howell with lettering by Marshall Dillon is really good with some interesting character designs and ideas presented. There’s even times the art looks like Sean Gordon Murphy’s with the combination of character design and use of inking. But then there’s other times the style looks like Ryan Ottley but without his comedic flair.

There’s a lot of potential here and I want to read more and see where it goes. The comic could be amazing diving into the current zeitgeist and exploring a snapshot of the current American socio-political situation. As is, we just have a vampire story set in a place we don’t normally see in comics.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Criminal #3

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Criminal #3 (Image Comics) – One of the best comics on the market. The current story is a meta look at a certain famous comic convention. How much is true? Well, that’s part of the fun.

Dark Red #1 (AfterShock) – A new series that’s about Vampires in Trump country. The concept sounds really interesting.

Dungeons & Dragons: A Darkened Wish #1 (IDW Publishing) – D&D is the new hotness, and IDW’s series have been fun for those into the game and world. Solid fantasy that’s always worth checking out.

Grumble #5 (Albatross Funnybooks) – A fun and funny series, one we’ll constantly recommend. While not the best place to start, we’re putting the series on your radar so you can catch up and not miss the awesome.

Incursion #2 (Valiant) – Valiant has been knocking it out of the park and this issue is a great example of that. Just a solid mini-series so far that highlights the quality of this publisher.

Invisible Kingdom #1 (Dark Horse Comics/Berger Books) – G. Willow Wilson and Christian Ward team up for this Berger Books debut and that’s all we need to know to get excited to check this one out. A sci-fi religious conspiracy concept is icing on the cake of awesome that is the creative team.

Lazarus Risen #1 (Image Comics) – It’s been a while since we read Lazarus so we’ve forgotten a bunch but the series has always been fantastic and amazing and to be able to get more makes us happy. It’s one of the most well thought out series and worlds in comics.

Life and Death of Toyo Harada #1 (Valiant) – Toyo Harada is one of the best characters in comics so we’re excited he’s getting a series. Is he a villain? Is he a hero? Is he somewhere in between? We can’t wait to see where this goes.

Spider-Man: City at War #1 (Marvel) – Based on the popular video game, Marvel launches a new universe in comics and we’re getting flashbacks to the “Ultimate” years and that’s completely ok.

Spider-Man: Life Story #1 (Marvel) – Chip Zdarksy and Mark Bagley are exploring Peter Parker’s life one decade at a time. This kicks off in the 60s just four years after being bitten. Think a condensed version of this is your life.

AfterShock Wants you to Read Dangerously in 2019

AfterShock Comics is prompting comic readers and fans to “Read Dangerously,” claiming 2019 as The Year of Reading Dangerously. Supported by a robust advertising and marketing campaign, this call to action will serve as the rallying cry behind all AfterShock brand activities and initiatives over the course of the year.

As publisher of many of the most talked about independent titles of the past few years – including Animosity, A Walk Through Hell, Dark Ark, and Babyteeth, AfterShock will push the envelope even further in 2019 with new releases and ongoing series that continue to thrill, chill and challenge – both imaginations and sensibilities.

Working with top writers, artists and some of the brightest new stars in the creative community, soon-to-debut 2019 titles Stronghold, Oberon, Dark Red, Out of the Blue, and Horde, to name only a few, will cut across all genres to take readers far beyond their comfort zones.

The theme will serve as the focal point of the brand’s 2019 marketing campaign, including new ads debuting in late January on the back covers of all titles, targeted digital advertising, podcast sponsorships, local comic shop initiatives, and prominent placement at major conventions throughout the year. Additional plans will be revealed at the ComicsPRO Annual Meeting to be held in Charlotte in late February.
