THE NEW GHOST RIDER!
There’s a new Spirit of Vengeance in town and he’s looking to run the place. There will be no stopping THIS rider. The mystery of Johnny Blaze’s disappearance continues!

Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance #2

Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance #1 debuts the new Ghost Rider

Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance #1

Johnny Blaze was bonded with the Spirit of Vengeance. Unwilling to be a monster, Johnny used this demon from Hell to do good as the Ghost Rider. But heroism isn’t what the Rider was meant for. So who will be the new Spirit of Vengeance? And what will it mean for the Marvel Universe? Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance #1 kicks off the next chapter for the Spirit of Vengeance as it seeks, and finds, a new host.

Written by Benjamin Percy, Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance #1 is a prime example of missed opportunity. A new character taking on an old mantle could be a moment of excitement and get a lot of buzz. But, Marvel spoiled who the new host Ghost Rider would be some time ago. With that already out there, the comic’s surprise and draw shifts a bit. How did this happen? Why was he chosen? What would he be like? Those first two questions are answered but that final one is left for another time. The over-sized comic takes its time getting us to what we know is coming and thus creates a comic that leaves us with what we already knew and wanted to know.

Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance #1 is interesting in that the Ghost Rider spirit leaves Johnny Blaze at a difficult moment. He’s in the middle of battle and thus powerless to fend for himself. But, that’s put to the side and instead we get to see the entity search for a new host as it goes on about its history. There’s some interesting aspects with quick hits of individuals as the Ghost Rider and damage left as it leaves. Most are very short and there’s little impact but two segments are given some breathing room, each creating potential stories that would have been worth seeing more of. In other words, the comic feels more like a bunch of teasers taking far to long to get to the point and skipping over some excellent ideas. No spoilers here as to all of that. But, there’s interesting aspects to the comic as it hops all over to get us to the new host for Ghost Rider, something we already knew and spoiled a while ago.

With the new host spoiled and already revealed before release, the more interesting aspect of the comic is the situation Johnny Blaze is left in. The moment is silly in some ways but how he escapes has potential and feels like an aspect of the comic that was set up, forgot, we’re given some detours, and then remembered to be resolved. A classic character thrown into danger should get a bit more focus, but instead, the comic spends a lot of time on the Ghost Rider entity waxing poetic and philosophically about what it’s looking for in a new host. One thing goes on too long and the other a bit too short. Then there’s the two hosts for a short time that could have been an issue or two on their own.

The art by Danny Kim is decent. With color by Bryan Valenza and lettering by Travis Lanham, the art, like the story, at times feels like quick hits. It’s amplified by pages and panels which are more focused and look great. Basically, the scenes with a lot of people, the detail drops but when it’s just a few, there’s a solid amount and it looks much better.

Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance #1 is an interesting comic. If it just focused on the new host and got us there, the pacing would have picked up and it’d be far more entertaining to get to what we already knew was happening. The other improvement would have been to not spoil it at all and let readers be surprised. Finally, a better direction would have been to let it play out through the first arc with the reveal coming the fourth or fifth issue and again not spoiling it. That would have allowed Percy to better explore the Ghost Rider entity and its role in the Marvel Universe. As is, we get some cool ideas and an ending we knew was coming. In other words, it’s a comic that doesn’t deliver much beyond what we already knew.

Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #4 delivers some final holiday cheer

Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #4

It’s a Christmas Night Fight: The search for a stolen child leads to Santa versus Krampus in the final, climactic battle for the soul of Christmas! The Justice League are stretched thin battling the mightiest monsters of the ages when the true menace is revealed! Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #4 wraps up the miniseries that has been fun holiday entertainment.

Batman teaming up with Santa Claus? Yes, the concept is a bit silly but the actual result has been a hell of a lot of fun. Yes, we can quibble in that the story really features the Justice League, but what should be a goof not only makes sense but also hopefully will become a holiday tradition.

Written by Jeff Parker, Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #4 finishes the event by laying everything out and wrapping things up in a satisfying way. There’s some fighting. There’s some nice trickery. But, there’s also a reveal as to who, or what, is behind events, and like Santa and Krampus, it ties into the DC Universe nicely. And that’s been part of the magic that Parker has pulled off with the series. He’s taken such a silly idea but worked it all out so it makes complete sense in the DC Universe. It plays things rather seriously but also just has a lot of fun with it all.

With art by Danny Kim and Stephen Segovia, Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #4 packs in a lot. With color by Alex Sinclair and lettering by Pat Brosseau, there’s a lot in the comic as the battle rages. There’s a lot of creatures and characters packed in and even with a snowy background, it looks so good. The creatures look solid and the Krampus’ struggle really comes off due to the art.

Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #4 is a solid finale to the series. The story is fun and while the last few pages are expected, the story itself has some nice surprises. It’s filled with charm and cheer perfect for the holiday season. Hopefully, this one becomes a yearly tradition

Johnny Blaze takes his final ride in Greg Capullo’s Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance #1 cover

This March, a new Ghost Rider will set the roads of the Marvel Universe ablaze in Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance! Continuing Benjamin Percy’s new twists on the Ghost Rider mythos, the new series will see the Spirit of Vengeance fall into the wrong hands and fans won’t believe who it is! Now, Johnny Blaze must embark on an epic quest to become Ghost Rider again before the newly possessed uses its demonic power for a dark purpose. Joining Percy on his latest hell ride will be Marvel newcomer Danny Kim, known for his work on last month’s Ghost Rider Annual #1.

WildC.A.T.S. #12 wraps up a fun ride

WildC.A.T.S. #12

In a final, climactic battle for control of HALO and all its secrets, it’s the WildC.A.T.s versus the Seven Soldiers versus the Court of Owls! Winner take all! WildC.A.T.S. #12 wraps up a wild run that finally brought the Wildstorm characters into the DC Universe in a way that makes sense and works.

WildC.A.T.S. #12 delivers a satisfying ending to Matthew Rosenberg‘s run on the classic characters. As I said in my early reviews, the series has done a solid job of integrating the Wildstorm characters into the DC Universe, giving them opponents that make sense and encounters that don’t feel out of place.

While WildC.A.T.S. #12 doesn’t really stand on its own, it does wrap up the series bringing various plots together and connecting those final dots. As a finale, it works well, though at times it feels rushed.

What Rosenberg nails, and it shows in this issue, is the connection of the team members to each other. This is a dysfunctional team that butts heads and argues with each other but the second some outside force comes for them, they rally around their brothers and sisters. There’s a love there that’s only present in a squabbling family. And, it leaves things open in a fun way where we’ll hopefully get more of that dysfunction and fun.

The art by Danny Kim and Tom Derenick slips a bit in the issue. Not sure what’s up but the early half of the comic doesn’t have the usual polish and splash we’ve seen delivering a little but of bump in an otherwise fun ride. They’re joined by Elmer Santos and letterer Ferran Delgado. WildC.A.T.S. #12 isn’t the flashiest comic, in that it doesn’t deliver moments that stick with you, but it does deliver fun visuals and small details that pop. Grifter lighting up a cigarette while facing down Halliday and the Court of Owls is as cool as you can get, encapsulating the character in one panel. Maul going on a rampage is fun in a “Hulk Smash” sort of way. And the ending pages… they tease a lot for what might come delivering the mental state of the characters through images alone.

I’ve enjoyed the entire run and a bit bummed to know WildC.A.T.S. #12 ends the current run. There was a fun aspect of the series remixing these characters a bit as they get folded into the DC Universe more. Hopefully, it has laid the groundwork for more of that and this isn’t the end but only the beginning for something more down the road.
