Valiant reveals a much different future for the publisher

Bloodshot Unleashed

A recent press release from Valiant hyping the upcoming Bloodshot Unleashed wasn’t exciting for what it said, it raised eyebrows for what it didn’t and what it hinted at.

The publisher is currently going through some rocky times though specifics seem scarce and it looks like those issues are impacting the publisher’s release schedule. In recent months releases have been scarce, far less than the usual release schedule pre-pandemic and during some of it. The publisher will now move putting out one release per month according to CBR. Reading in between the lines of Valiant’s press release, this lines up with much of what’s danced around.

Writer Steve Foxe announced on Twitter that Archer & Armstrong Forever #4 would be the last issue of the series. Not the original plan, the series was solicited through #6. According to Foxe, “plans changed” leading to the unfinished series.

With that series no longer being released, Valiant’s next release will be Blooshot Unleahsed, an adults-only series from writer Deniz Camp and artist Jon Davis-Hunt. It’ll come to shops on September 21st with issues coming out monthly. It’s planned for four issues.

That means the recently released Book of Shadows will be pushed back. The first issue from writer Cullen Bunn and artist Vicente Cifuentes was released in July. The next issue won’t see print until January 2023, a six month gap. X-O Manowar Unconquered by Becky Cloonan, Michael W. Conrad and Liam Sharp will then launch in March 2023. That comic was originally scheduled for December 2022.

Also awaiting release is Eternal Warrior: Scorched Earth, an original graphic novel Kickstarted in December and expected to be released in November 2022. That project raised a little over $55,000 from 531 individuals and the latest update said the graphic novel was on schedule. This was before the recent issues which has caused individuals to go to the comments of the project voicing their concerns.

The publisher seems to be having a rough time of late finding its footing. Staff has left and the company itself has dipped its toes into the digital world with NFTs and other “get rich quick” pivots. Licensing has increased with shoes and an upcoming toy line but from the outside it looks to be a company attempting to find its way throwing darts and seeing what lands.

Review: Archer & Armstrong Forever #4

Archer & Armstrong Forever #4

The Eccentric will stop at nothing to add Armstrong to his collection. Archer will stop at nothing to restore his best friend’s lost immortality. And who the heck is going to stop The Maw when he catches up with Archer and Armstrong? Only one thing is certain: Archer & Armstrong Forever #4 will change Archer & Armstrong…FOREVER!

I’ve been largely enjoying this series; the irreverent fun and pacing has often been a welcome distraction while reading the comic. Because Archer & Armstrong Forever hasn’t really picked up on the threads from the previous volumes, it has been the kind of series that new readers can use to introduce themselves to one of comics’ more unique duos. The fourth issue is the first one this series where you can’t really pick up and read without having read the previous one, as it picks up exactly where the Archer & Armstrong Forever #3 left off with the Maw having subdued Archer, Armstrong and Frig, which is exactly where we start this issue. I’ve really enjoyed how writer Steve Foxe has brought these characters to life, but this issue had a little less of the magic from the first three; the jokes didn’t quite hit the same way for me as in the past, and consequently the book fell a little flat for me. It’s still far from a bad book, and was still enjoyable, but hasn’t been as solid a comic as its predecessors.

Visually, the comic is still a triumph; Marcio Fiorito, Alex Guimaraes and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (artist, colourist and letterer respectively) continue to deliver a top notch book – this is visually genuinely enjoyable from start to finish.

I ended the review last month with this: “you really can’t go wrong with any book featuring Archer and Armstrong together, but when they’re written well, holy shit, is that a comic that you should be reading. Archer & Armstrong Forever is a book where the characters are written really well – don’t miss this.” Ultimately that’s still entirely true even with the falter (and you know, there’s every chance that I read this on an off day – I’ll happily admit that), this is still a comic I’ll be adding to my physical collection.

Review: Book Of Shadows #1

Book of Shadows #1

Shadowman. Eternal Warrior. Punk Mambo. Doctor Mirage. The supernatural protectors of the Valiant Universe unite for the very first time to stand against a terrifying ancient threat: Exarch Fane. No one is safe as the fearsome foe has his cold hands on the Book of Shadows.

Master of horror Cullen Bunn and bone-chilling artist Vicente Cifuentes present Book Of Shadows, a supernatural event that forms a brand-new team in the Valiant Universe… but will they be enough to stop Fane’s wrath?

Continuing on from Cullen Bunn‘s brilliant run writing Shadowman comes the first issue of Book Of Shadows. I’ll admit to be very excited about this one not only because Bunn’s run on Shadowman is one of my favourite things to have come from Valiant recently (in fact, I don’t think there has been a bad run on Shadowman since 2012, if I’m honest), but also because of the inclusion of the Eternal Warrior – one of my favourite comic book characters across all publishers.

The story itself centres on the invasion of our world by demons following what has been written in the Book Of Shadows; fairly straight-forward stuff, yes, but it’s the way in which Bunn has framed the script that will keep you hooked. The narration boxes add more to the action than you would expect seeing as how they’re at times often unrelated to the goings on with the page’s art. Book Of Shadows #1 features art by Vicenty Cifuentes, colours by Nick Filardi and lettering provided by the ever-reliable Dave Sharpe; a creative team who unite to pull off a comic that plays on Bunn’s horror elements without shying away from some of the more traditional heroic images as characters do their thing within the pages.

As the debut issue of an event/miniseries book, this can be read alone; Bunn has structured the opening so that (assuming you have a passing knowledge of Shadowman) you’ll be more than able to enjoy the book (even if you don’t have a passing knowledge, you can still enjoy the book, in all honesty) – but it’s when this is read as the culmination of Bunn’s Shadowman run that it really comes together. Little plot hints and previous threads, character relationships all build upon what we’ve read before and they make sense.

Book Of Shadows is only the first issue, and while I can’t help but compare it to the earlier story Book Of Death because of the name, the new series is already starting to pull itself away from anything the Valiant universe seen yet. With this creative team at the helm, Book Of Shadows has earned its place as one of the series I’m most excited to read over the next few months.

Review: Armorclads #5

Armorclads #5

It’s Alphan Armorclads vs. the Legionnaires’ guerrilla tactics with the Ironclads caught in the crossfire in Armorclads #5! With the Citadel under assault from all sides, it’s going to take more than luck to rescue Peris and escape in one piece. With the Legionnaires unveiling their secret weapon, will the Citadel fall before the Ironclads can fight their way out?

The last two issues of Armorclads have effectively just been a rather large combat scene with giant mechs battling it out with humans and monsters; writers JJ O’Connor and Brian Buccalleto are more than capable of pulling something like this off, and do so while leaving enough threads hanging for the second arc/series that will inevitably be hitting in the future.

The plot in the comic is pretty simple, with the Iron Clads aiming to rescue Peris from the director amidst the chaos, which does end up with one of the more eyebrow raising moments in the series as Peris seems to have developed some form of Stockholm Syndrome with the director – though this is largely based around the ancient mech that they had discovered might work for the captured youth (at this point the mech has basically become another Chekov’s gun situation). This marks one of the downsides of the series as the dialogue around the exchange seems a little hokey compared to what we’ve seen in the series already, but ultimately it’s not enough to really break your immersion in the story.

I’m going to repeat what I said last issue, about the artwork, because it’s still just as relevant given the setting hasn’t shifted locations at all; “The artwork, once again, is wonderfully suited to what you’re seeing on the page. Gone are the lush vistas and vibrant colours, however, replaced with a harsh rock and urban landscape bathed in greys and browns, lit primarily by explosions and missile blasts. The comic’s artistic team, penciller Manuel Garcia, inker Raul Fernandez, colourist Rex Lokus, and letterer Dave Sharpe, deliver yet another visual experience that grabs you by the collar and shakes your tired self for attention. There are a lot of names credited to this book, and each one of them deserves praise.”

Armorclads #5 isn’t the conclusion I had hoped for, given the number of threads left dangling, but it’s still going to be a satisfying enough ending to the first trade; here’s hoping the next part won’t take too long to turn up.
