The Comic-Con Museum has been proud to showcase the art and legacy of artist Dave Stevens, notably that of his greatest creation, the Rocketeer. “The Rocketeer,” which began 40 years ago as the back-up feature in a comic-book series, achieved immediate acclaim and became a beloved part of comic fandom. In 1991, Walt Disney Studios adapted the series featuring down-on-his luck stunt pilot Cliff Secord, who discovers an incredible invention – a mysterious jetpack – and fights criminals alongside his model girlfriend Betty and his trusted mechanic Peevy, into a feature film. Disney’s “The Rocketeer” featured a look straight from the pages of a pulp comic from a past era, lovingly recreating 1930s Hollywood as the setting for this beloved, all-ages high-adventure tale of gangsters, Nazi spies and the growth of the Age of Aviation.

SDCC 2022: Hemingway in Comics comes to the Comic-Con Museum

Comic-Con Museum

Writer Ernest Hemingway casts a long shadow in literature that extends into comic books, where he has appeared alongside Superman, Mickey Mouse and Captain Marvel—he even fought fascists with Wolverine.

Hemingway in Comics, the book and the exhibit at the Comic-Con Museum, explore what it means to be a pop culture icon, and how that image can change over time. Hemingway in Comics celebrates more than 120 of these comics from 18 countries, from the U.S. and Mexico to the Netherlands and Latvia. Artists featured in the show include Chris Ware, Colleen Doran, Cliff Chiang, Steve Rolston, Ryan Inzana, Gabo, Norwegian artist Jason and many others.

The Comic-Con Museum will host a preview of the show in its theater lobby during the July convention, then host the full 60+ artifact exhibition from August to December 2022.

During the convention, a panel will discuss the show on Saturday (11:30 AM -12:30 PM). Panelists include Robert K. Elder (Hemingway in Comics) Elliot S! Maggin (Superman, Action Comics), Zander Cannon (Kaijumax, Smax), Eric Peterson (Jesus Christ: In the Name of the Gun), Dr. Emily Schindler, director of education at the Comic-Con Museum, plus special guests.

The Comic-Con Museum Launches an Eight Decades of Archie Exhibit

Archie Comics is joining Comic-Con International in launching their new Comic-Con Museum as one of the first exhibits as part of this weekend’s Comic-Con Special Edition in San Diego. “Eight Decades of Archie” celebrates 80 years of Archie Comics and Riverdale hijinks. This world-premiere exhibition celebrates both the vast cultural legacy of Archie Comics over its 80-year span and the enduring appeal of its ever-evolving cast of typical American teenagers. Attendees will be welcomed to Riverdale through vintage comic books, original art, unique props and other exclusive memorabilia, all built to delight both the most ardent and casual Archie fans.

The Comic-Con Museum, which will celebrate the magic of Comic-Con year-round, had a soft opening to the public on November 26. Located in San Diego’s iconic Balboa Park the Museum is featuring six diverse, entertaining, educational and interactive exhibits. Special programming, screenings and a variety of special nighttime activities will be offered leading up to the summer of 2022 grand opening which will also feature the “Eight Decades of Archie” exhibit.

The soft opening of the Museum is occurring while Comic-Con Special Edition – the first in-person gathering for San Diego Comic-Con fans since July 2019 – begins at the San Diego Convention Center. However, while Comic-Con Special Edition ends on Nov. 28, the Museum experience will continue throughout the year. Tickets for the Museum will also be sold at the Museum; reservations are encouraged as attendance may be limited.

SDCC 2020: Comic-Con Museum Looks to the Future Beyond the SDCC Cancellation

Comic-Con Museum

The cancellation of San Diego Comic-Con is a blow to the city of San Diego. The convention is a major revenue generator for the city and its businesses driving more money than some of the local sports teams.

The relationship between the convention and the city is expanding with the Comic-Con Museum which is to have its grand opening in 2021.

Located in San Diego’s Balboa Park, the Comic-Con Museum will be a year-round pop-culture wonderland featuring rotating immersive exhibits, theaters of varying sizes and extensive educational programming. Open both day and night time, the Museum will cater to the interests and passions of fans of all ages.

Below is the message the museum sent to its supporters about the cancellation of the convention and its looking forward to the future.

Comic-Con Museum Charter Members and supporters,

Comic-Con International is officially cancelling the 2020 San Diego Comic-Con, marking the first time in 50 years that the show will not go on. It is the right thing to do. Comic-Con wants to do all we can to fight the spread of this virus and support workers who are on the front line, fighting this battle.

There will be better days ahead and we believe the Comic-Con Museum will play an important role in San Diego’s recovery after COVID-19. We are a destination city and tourism is vital to our economy.  The development and opening of the Comic-Con Museum will act as a catalyst to reopen one of the world’s best urban park’s and a destination city known world-wide.

Some of the proposed Phase I renovations will shift, but this will not scale back the visitor experience. Our 2021 grand opening is still on track and you will soon see building plans that illustrate this transformation. To ensure we stay connected in this new reality, the Museum will introduce new and creative digital ways to bring the magic of Comic-Con to you all year-round.

We will redouble our efforts to regain momentum on opening this museum by 2021. And we can’t wait to work with you to realize this vision. Better days are ahead.
