Review – Feeding Ground #1

Bookmark and Share

Feeding Ground #1I missed the first issue of Feeding Ground #1 and caught up yesterday, and I’m a bit mixed.  Along with the first issue I read the second and so far together they’re better than separate, the second issue is much stronger of the two.

Written by Swifty Lang with art with Michael Lapinski the story seems to be a werewolf story but in the first issue I’m not quite clear on it.  It’s not necessarily the start that’d get me excited to read it.  Here’s the solicit text for the second issue:

FEEDING GROUND, a horror tale set on the Mexico-Arizona border, launches an entirely new werewolf mythology! A local enforcer, Don Oso, terrorizes the Busqueda family as their father Diego makes a solitary trek home through the horrors of the Devil’s Highway. Meanwhile, US Border Patrol agents unearth a shocking discovery that threatens to reveal a secret buried in the desert for generations. Also included as bonus content on the flip side of the book is the story in Spanish!

The first issue, I’ll admit, had me scratching my head a bit.  I wasn’t quite sure what was going on, other than a bunch of folks sneaking across the U.S./Mexican border.  I loved the art though, there’s a very cool feel to it, but I can’t say that alone won me over.

This is a weird one, the second issue (reviewed later today!) did what the first issue didn’t, set up a mystery I’m interested in.

Wizkids has released a preview of it’s latest creation for the DC 75th Heroclix, Atrocitus.

Heroclix AtrocitusFrom the Wizkids website:

His “Burn Through Defenses” Trait allows Atrocitus to more readily damage his foes, while his Indomitable ability enables him to attack turn almost every turn.

Front loaded Charge and Super Strength gets him into battle quickly for some first strike terror, and early to mid-dial Blades/Claws/Fangs gives you the option of trying for more than his printed 3 damage! Or, pair Atrocitus with the Red Lantern special object and pump his damage up by +1 thanks to his ever-present Battle Fury!

Review – Lucid #2

Bookmark and Share

Lucid 2 CoverI really enjoyed the first issue of the series and Lucid #2 upped my enjoyment.  The entire issue focuses on an assassination attempt on the President, and when magic gets involved things get pretty interesting.

Things are heating up at the House at Dupont Circle! What is the Prophecy of the Pendragon? What Occult weapon threatens the fate the United States…for the second time? And what exactly is an Astral Amplifier?! LUCID #2 takes you one more giant leap into the strange world of Matthew Dee as the novice Combat Mage races against the clock to prevent President’s Day from becoming a National Day of Mourning! Written by “True Blood” actor Michael McMillian and illustrated by newcomer Anna Wieszczyk, LUCID is Archaia’s first title published in association with Zachary Quinto (“Heroes,” “Star Trek”) and his company, Before the Door.

The series written by Michael McMillian is entertaining.  The pacing is good and action solid.  There’s nothing too deep here, but it’s just an action movie you can check your mind at the door and just read and enjoy.  That’s not a bad thing at all.

Anna Wieszcyk‘s art is pretty cool with an interesting anime feel to it.  My only complaint is the faces of the men are all pretty similar, though each character is distinguishable.

This was In the Line of Fire with magic thrown in.  Pretty simple really, but very entertaining.  This is a series I look forward to reading each time I see it hit the releases.
