Captain America and Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon continues to Pave the Way for the Next Marvel Epic in April

The road to “Armageddon,” an upcoming Marvel event written by Chip Zdarsky, officially begins this month in Captain America #6, the start of an all-new arc in Zdarsky’s acclaimed run. Zdarsky will also set the stage for the event in Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon, a four-issue prelude series kicking off next month. Both series team Zdarsky up with top artists including Valerio Schiti, Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar, and Jan Bazaldua on Captain America and Luca Maresca on Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon. Fans can peek ahead at what’s to come in April with the reveal of Captain America #9-10, new parts of the “Armageddon” lead-in arc, and Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #3.

“Armageddon” picks up in the aftermath of One World Under Doom. With global tensions rising to determine the fate of Latveria, it’s up to Captain America and the all-new S.H.I.E.L.D. to prevent various groups from erupting into all-out war, including one with a startling connection to Doom’s legacy. Meanwhile, Wolverine investigates a mysterious new super soldier program, but is too late to stop them from creating a deadly new Weapon X. All this while origin boxes, brought over to the 616 from the new Ultimate Universe, begin to surface, giving rise to new heroes and ushering in the next era of Avengers…

Will of Doom #1 Sets Up What’s to Come for the Marvel Universe

Will of Doom #1

LONG LIVE, DOOM! As the Fantastic Four deal with the fallout from One World Under Doom, they’re faced with big questions and a surprising new global menace! Will the White House have their backs? Will…the Red Hulk? The next stage of the Marvel Universe starts here! Will of Doom #1 wraps up the recent event while setting up what’s next.

Written by Chip Zdarsky, Will of Doom #1 is an interesting issue, dancing around what I really want to see explored after “One World Under Doom.” The story focuses on Doom’s final will and testament and the ramifications of his absence after having taken over the world. There are those who still wish he ruled. There’s also leaders who need to step up back into their roles and get things back in order. And it’s Doom, so of course there’s a “failsafe.”

The comic dances around the hurt and destruction, as well as how the world is seeing its superheroes, but really focuses on Val Richards. Doom has left her everything. Val, who was killed during the event and brought back, is torn by Doom’s actions. The issue is solid in showing this young woman wrestling with her feelings towards Doom as well as what he did. It’s a comic that actually focuses on the fallout of events and the emotional aspect of it all. It also is interesting in seeing Reed Richards’ relationship with Doom explored as well. It’s an issue that really reflects on Doom the person, someone who could be the greatest but something prevents that. Someone who could do such good but also has no problem hurting so many while he does so.

There’s also a lot setting up what’s to come next. There’s the “Armageddon” event that this leads into but also Red Hulk’s actions to deal with, including the fallout of planting an American flag in Latveria. There’s something solid about Ross espousing American ideals and not being afraid of being American. It echoes the nationalism today without directly addressing it.

The art by CAFU is solid. With color by David Curiel and lettering by Travis Lanham the comic looks good as it balances the action as well as the emotional struggles. The characters look good, and there’s a lot of them, but the action feels like it leaves a wreckage behind. Val feels like she’s struggling and hurt by everything that has happened. It’s a comic whose visuals pop and are just solid. Nothing is necessarily memorable with iconic moments, but it’s just really good.

Will of Doom #1 serves as a solid epilogue for “One World Under Doom.” It reflects on Doom’s actions, some of what that meant, and delivers enough nuggets to tease what’s to come. It’s a “buy” for those who enjoyed the event serving as a solid final chapter or for those who are really invested in the greater Marvel Universe and what’s to come.

S.H.I.E.L.D. Returns in Captain America #6!

Last week at the Lucca Comics & Games festival, Marvel Comics Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski and writer Chip Zdarsky shed light on the next arc of Captain America, one of the industry’s hottest new titles! Kicking off in issue #6 this January, the upcoming storyline will set a new status quo for Steve Rogers and the wider Marvel Universe with a moment that’s been anticipated for years…THE RETURN OF S.H.I.E.L.D.!

Drawn by series artist Valerio Schiti along with guest artists Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar, the new Captain America arc will bring the run to present day and be a key chapter in the buildup to next summer’s Armageddon, a new comic book event series also written by Zdarsky. In the aftermath of One World Under Doom, Captain America will find himself on the frontlines defending the future of Latveria against a resurfaced threat from the series’ opening arc, as well as outside forces including an ALL-NEW S.H.I.E.L.D., the iconic covert organization not seen since it was dissolved in 2017’s Secret Empire.

Doom’s fall—and a violent incursion by Thunderbolt Ross—have brought Latveria to the brink of civil war! Captain America deploys to protect civilians and investigate rumors of a weapons stockpile, but when Nick Fury Jr.’s unpredictable new version of S.H.I.E.L.D. joins the mission, it becomes clear that everyone wants a piece of Latveria—no matter the cost.

With warring factions tearing the country apart and a squad of unconventional S.H.I.E.L.D. agents pursuing unknown agendas, can Captain America hope to bring peace to Latveria? And is that even what his own handlers want?

Smaller, leaner, and more underground than its predecessor, the re-formed S.H.I.E.L.D. includes an eclectic group of agents: Joe Ramos, an altruistic soldier from Brooklyn; Charles Castlemore, a retired Marine with strong opinions about the Latverian resistance; Trevor Tambling, a soldier of fortune with unclear motives; and Red Widow, a former Russian agent abandoned by her home country for her questionable loyalty. Nick Fury must keep these soldiers in line as they carry out their secret task to retrieve Doom’s weapons—even if it means clashing with Cap!

See S.H.I.E.L.D. in action in Valerio Schiti’s new cover for Captain America #6 and #7, along with new original design sheets, and check out a new promotional variant cover by Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar.

The Road to Armageddon begins in Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon

Armageddon is coming. Teased last week, the game-changing event from writer Chip Zdarsky will have a major impact on the future of the Marvel Universe, including a transformation of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes the likes of which haven’t been experienced since Avengers: Disassembled! Key buildup to the saga can found in Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti’s current run of Captain America, recent developments in Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion along with its aftermath in Miles Morales: Spider-Man, and Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon, a four-issue limited series launching in February!

Written by Zdarsky and drawn by Luca Maresca, Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon marks the first chapter of the biggest story of the year. The pulse-pounding lead-in series sends Wolverine on a pivotal mission to track down the latest victim of a new superhuman experimentation program, only to discover a mysterious power at their disposal that could change everything…

ARMAGEDDON STRIKES THE MARVEL UNIVERSE!

When an old acquaintance drags Logan into the search for a new abducted mutant subject, the terrifying methods of the defunct Weapon X program are revealed to be alive and well. As Wolverine follows the scent of the feral Tyler – and the scent of his own trauma – he finds himself in a deadly race against a super-soldier-creating corporation called PRIMEWARRIOR…which has just hired a very familiar face: the fully armed and upgraded NUKE!
