Chaosium Announces an Upcoming Gamefound Campaign for Call of Cthulhu: Old Ones Origins

Call of Cthulhu: Old Ones Origins

Chaosium Inc. has announced the upcoming Gamefound campaign for Call of Cthulhu: Old Ones Origins, an asymmetric strategy board game from Samuel W. Bailey, one of the designers of the Golden Geek-nominated Forbidden Stars.

Designed for 2–4 players, the game puts each player in command of a distinct faction devoted to one of the legendary deities of the Cthulhu Mythos. Each faction has its own powers and units, which players must use to outmaneuver their opponents and battle for cosmic supremacy.

Featured during Gamefound Summer Feast 2026, the game’s Gamefound page is now live. Fans can follow it for exclusive previews, updates, and future announcements.

Call of Cthulhu: Old Ones Origins is an enhanced reimplementation of Forbidden Stars, which was nominated for the 2015 Golden Geek awards for Best Strategy Board Game and Best Thematic Board Game. The original game challenged players to lead factions with different abilities and play styles while balancing immediate moves with long-term strategy.

Old Ones Origins brings that strategic foundation into the Cthulhu Mythos setting, where ancient powers clash at the dawn of time. Players must learn the strengths of their faction, adapt their plans, and outmaneuver their rivals to become the ultimate force among the Old Ones.

Call of Cthulhu: Old Ones Origins Key Features

  • Wage War as an Eldritch Power: Lead a faction devoted to one of the legendary deities of the Cthulhu Mythos and battle for cosmic supremacy.

  • Distinct Factions and Strategies: Master unique powers and units, adapt your plans, and find new ways to outmaneuver your opponents.

  • A New Take on Forbidden Stars: Experience a Cthulhu Mythos reimagining of the award-nominated strategy game, designed by one of its original designers, Samuel W. Bailey.

  • Bring the Cthulhu Mythos to the Table: Build an imposing army of highly detailed miniatures, including unique faction units and towering avatars.

The Gamefound page for Call of Cthulhu: Old Ones Origins is available to follow today for exclusive updates, previews, and future announcements. Players who follow the campaign and back it when it launches can unlock the Gamefound-exclusive Conflict Marker miniature.

New for RuneQuest Classic: 1992’s Sun County returns

RuneQuest Sun County

New for Chaosium‘s RuneQuest Classic series – Sun County is a Gloranthan campaign supplement for RuneQuest’s 3rd edition, first published in 1992. This fully remastered version is available now from DriveThruRPG in three formats:

  • PDF (which of course didn’t exist in 1992)
  • Soft cover with B&W interior, like the original version;
  • and a new special hard cover version with color interior, thanks to talents of Chaosium ‘head of nostalgia’ Rick Meints and community ambassador/guru Nick Brooke.

RPG historian Shannon Appelcline (Designers & Dragons) has written a new foreword for the book. In it he describes how Sun County was “an instant classic” on release. It ushered in a short-lived but brilliant ‘RuneQuest Renaissance” for the game’s third edition, with a further five well-regarded Gloranthan titles released from 1992-1995 under the creative auspices of ‘Rune Czar’ Ken Rolston. Shannon also notes that such is Sun County‘s influence on Gloranthan creators, the themes and settings of the “RuneQuest Renaissance” are still strongly reflected today in Chaosium’s Jonstown Compendium community content program.

Sun County is a Gloranthan campaign supplement for the RuneQuest roleplaying game, containing:

  • Four scenarios ready for play
  • Extensive historical notes on Sun County and its culture
  • Profiles of important persons and peoples of the region
  • Full description of the Yelmalio cult
  • Extensive detailed encounter tables
  • Personal notes and observations of Jaxarte Whyded, Commissioner of the Imperial Census, on his travels through the land
  • Sundry useful and ornamental details of interest to the Gloranthan scholar.
  • A new foreword by RPG Historian Shannon Appelcline
