Review: Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #1

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #1

With two Captain America comics, one with Sam Wilson the other with Steve Rogers, I’ve been wondering how the two would stand out from each other and at the same time, how they might be similar. So far, the two debut issues are very similar… but in good ways. The two comics are similar in that they explore the differences between the two heroes who share a mantle and responsibility. Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #1 focuses on Steve Rogers and its start is an entertaining one that delivers a lot of potential and entertainment.

Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #1 is Steve Rogers’ role as Captain America. The two take the character to his roots, exploring his past, and most importantly the man under the mask. Rogers heads back to his childhood home and attempts to create a life in the neighborhood he grew up. This isn’t his retirement though, as he also has to leap into action literally saving July 4th.

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #1 and its sister series are interesting in that they both follow a bit of a formula. They focus on the two individuals under the mask and also deliver a lot of action. The action though is really a driver of what’s to come for each series and its the “human” moments that are the most interesting for both.

In this case, we get some reflection from Steve as he moves into his new apartment and attempts to do some basic things like take classes at a local community college. It perpetuates the wholesome vibe of the character as he adjusts but also the years of experience as he reflects. Lanzing and Kelly deliver a hero we can relate to. Yes, he’s the embodiment of what we should aspire to be in so many ways, but he’s also very much grounded her having trouble with some basic things and interacting with his friends in very normal ways. Other than Bucky and the villain they battle together, the comic is generally absent of the rather grand world Rogers is neck deep in. It reminds us that he’s a man out of time but also just a man.

The art by Carmen Carnero is great. With color by Nolan Woodard and lettering by Joe Caramagna the comic looks great. It’s able to nail down so many moments. The art perfectly transitions from a touching reflective moment to almost rom-com-esque humor, to grand action sequences. It all fits together and flows as if there’s nothing that separates these sequences. The characters all have such personality as well.

What’s truly interesting is the mystery within the comic. The pitch is there’s unknown history involving Captain America’s shield and the comic delivers hints for the readers to decipher. That’s buried in the art and elsewhere driving clues that will have readers analyzing every panel, detail, and background. It’s an interactive, fun, and more engaging reading experience due to that.

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #1 is a solid debut with great art and a good start to a mystery. It just nails the beats and provides action, humor, and most importantly grounded moments we can relate to. It nails down what makes Steve Rogers an interesting character and with the other Captain America comic, the two together should deliver an interesting experience for a long time to come.

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty Packs a Mystery that Readers Can Help Solve!

Kicking off tomorrow in Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #1, Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Carmen Carnero’s new Captain America epic will find the Star-Spangled Avenger embroiled in a conspiracy as old as his shield – And eagle-eyed readers of the series might just be able to uncover information about the mystery before Cap himself does! Bill & Ted Roll the Dice #1 (Opus Comics) – The time-traveling duo are back in a monthly series of most excellent adventures! The duo are back and having a nice renaissance and we’re excited to see how that translates to comics!

Blue, Barry & Pancakes Vol. 4 Enter the Underground Throwdown (First Second) – The series is a lot of fun for kids and adults and solid lessons… for both really.

Bone Orchard Mythos: Passageway (Image Comics) – The first book in the horror shared universe from Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino. With those two involved, we’re absolutely in for this release.

Bunny Mask: Hollow Inside #2 (AfterShock) – The horror series has us guessing what’s going to happen next and this new primordial force has us intrigued as to exactly that.

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #1 (Marvel) – Steve Rogers gets his own Captain America series and we’re intrigued how the two will work together and stand apart from each other.

Clementine Book 1 (Image Comics/Skybound) – The popular character from The Walking Dead video game comes to comics in a young reader graphic novel series!

Deadpool: Samurai Vol. 2 (VIZ Media) – The manga take on Marvel’s popular character has been interesting. We were a bit mixed on the debut but still want to see where the second volume goes.

Do a Powerbomb #1 (Image Comics) – Wrestling gets hardcore when a necromancer asks Lona Steelrose to join the grandest pro wrestling tournament ever.

Eight Billion Genies #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue was a lot of fun as everyone in the world gets a genie to make a wish.

G.I. JOE: Saturday Morning Adventures #4 (IDW Publishing) – Perfectly capturing the 1980s cartoon, the comic is perfect nostalgia and a hell of a lot of fun.

Grim #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The first issue was a hell of a lot of fun focused on a grim reaper who has things go really sideways for her. It left us scratching our heads wanting to see what happens next.

Marvel’s Secret Reverse Vol. 1 (VIZ Media) – Yu-Gi-Oh! creator Kazuki Takahashi takes on Iron Man and Spider-Man!

The Ocean Will Take Us #3 (AfterShock) – The series has a great mix of mystery and teenage drama.

Radical: My Year with a Socialist Senator (IDW Publishing/Top Shelf) – Dive into the world of politics with this graphic novel about true experiences during a political campaign.

Undiscovered Country: Destiny Man Special (Image Comics) – The mysterious villain gets a special issue focused on him!

Why the People: The Case for Democracy (First Second) – Is democracy still the best form of government? This graphic novel attempts to answer that question!

Miracleman joins Marvel’s heroes in Variant Covers

This year, Marvel will honor the 40th anniversary of Miracleman’s modern era with a transformative year for the iconic super hero. In addition to announcements for upcoming new collections of his groundbreaking stories, fans witnessed a monumental development in last year’s Timeless #1: the herald of Miracleman’s grand return! In anticipation of his upcoming era, a new collection of variant covers will show Miracleman fighting alongside some of Marvel’s greatest heroes for the very first time. This year marks a new age of Captain America with the launch of two Captain America ongoing titles. Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and artist Carmen Carnero will tell the adventures of Steve Rogers in Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty while writer Tochi Onyebuchi and artist R.B. Silva will see Sam Wilson soar as Captain America once again in Captain America: Symbol of Truth. The journeys of both shield bearers will begin in April’s Captain America #0 where they will team up after an explosive attack by Arnim Zola. Right now, fans get a first look at the opening battle in Captain America #0 in a new action-packed preview, featuring artwork by Mattia De Iulis!!

Marvel Reveals its Pride Month Variant Covers by Luciano Vecchio and Betsy Cola

In addition to another installment of Marvel’s Voices: Pride, Marvel Comics will also celebrate Pride Month with a brand-new collection of variant covers. Extraordinary comic book artists Luciano Vecchio and Betsy Cola will team up to depict some of the most beloved and rising Marvel stars that belong to the LGBTQI+ community. A total of eight covers, this artwork showcasing these powerful heroes and warriors will be featured on select Marvel issues throughout June. 

Here’s who will be spotlighted in this vibrant and celebratory cover series:

  • Somnus – A mutant hero with the power to control dreams, Somnus debuted in a poignant story in last year’s MARVEL’S VOICES: PRIDE and now a member of Kate Pryde’s mutant rescue squad in MARAUDERS.
  • Aaron Fischer – Also known as the Captain America of the Railways, Aaron made a big splash during Captain America’s 80th Anniversary in THE UNITED STATES OF CAPTAIN AMERICA limited series. Look out for him in upcoming issues of the ALLIGATOR LOKI INFINITY COMIC.
  • Destiny – The recently resurrected classic X-Men foe now serves as one of the most prominent leaders of mutantkind. See what the future holds for her in the upcoming IMMORTAL X-MEN series.
  • Iceman – An original X-Man, Iceman is fresh off a stint on the Marauders that saw him use his omega-level abilities in some of his most impressive feats yet and the next big thing for this iconic hero is just on the horizon. Keep an eye out on upcoming X-Men issues to see what title he’ll be ice sliding into next! 
  • Karma – A founding member of the New Mutants, Karma uses her many years of experience defending Charles Xavier’s dream to guide the next generation of mutantkind in the current run of NEW MUTANTS.
  • America Chavez – The breakout star of the Young Avengers, America will use her superhuman strength and interdimensional star portals as part of a new team of THUNDERBOLTS.
  • Valkyrie – Rūna debuted as the mysterious and only surviving original Valkyrie during KING IN BLACK. Since then, fans have learned more about her in titles like MIGHTY VALKYRIES and WOMEN OF MARVEL. Stay tuned to find out where to witness her next legendary battles starting in June! 
  • Daken – The son of Wolverine, Daken will put his claws, healing factor, and fierce fighting skills to good use as a member of the current lineup of MARAUDERS.
