Batman: Last Knight on Earth

Twenty years in the future, Bruce Wayne wakes up in Arkham Asylum. Young. Sane. And… he’s never been Batman. So begins this sprawling tale of the Dark Knight as he embarks on a quest through a devastated DC landscape. Batman: Last Knight on Earth is finally collected and as a whole the comic is rather… predictable.

Written by Scott Snyder the three-issue series starts off well enough but as it progresses the reveals, for the most part, become rather predictable (who the villain is) or unexplained shock value. The series feels like a shock value read in that the visuals and concepts are enough to entertain. The story itself is rather shallow and in many ways feels like something Snyder has done before.

The story is a journey for Bruce as Batman as he discovers the new DC landscape and attempts to piece together what has happened. A new villain dubbed Omega is the end boss. The identity of the villain becomes fairly obvious early on. In many ways, this all feels like a retread and extension of Snyder’s gonzo Dark Multiverse concept and with it one of the best villains of DC, The Batman Who Laughs.

While the journey Snyder puts Batman through could be interesting in an examination of the character, it instead feels like a reference check list. We’re taken to locations but it never gets too deeps in an examination of our hero and his legacy. It’s flash without depth. Cool concepts that aren’t explored enough. This is the basis of an interesting world and feels like a bunch of ideas on a white board instead of an interesting narrative.

Snyder is joined by his often partner in crime Greg Capullo who delivers his usual impressive visuals. Jonathan Glapion provides ink, FCO Plascencia the color and Tom Napolitano the lettering. The visuals are a whirlwind of cool with interesting takes on characters that much like Snyder’s narrative hints at something so much more. We can guess the crap that’s been seen and battles waged but little is dedicated to that. We get some mentions but little exploration beyond that.

The world itself is one of weird and wonderful as if we’re descending into the different levels of Hell. Much like the story itself, there’s some interesting things that could have been done with the visuals to take it to the next level as far as page layouts and panels but for the most part we’re left with a pretty standard comic in that sense. A sweeping tale didn’t get the sweeping art it needed. But, the detail is fantastic and makes you want to learn more of the how and the why of this world.

Batman: Last Knight on Earth is an entertaining enough story but it doesn’t match what Snyder and Capullo have delivered before. There’s a lack of emotional punch and connection. There’s also the lack of exploration of the impact of what’s presented. It’s danced around but never quite makes its case. It’s a Cliff’s Notes final product of something that could be so much more.

Batman: Last Knight on Earth #2

Batman: Last Knight on Earth #2 takes Batman and Joker’s head, deeper into this mysterious world in an attempt to figure out who is responsible. But when villains from his past begin to complicate things for the Dark Knight, he finds an unlikely ally in a place known as “the Plains of Solitude.”

Writer Scott Snyder delivers an interesting but at times confusing issue. Batman’s journey takes him through a world that feels more like something out of a nightmare than an actual post-apocalyptic landscape. Worlds shrink down, trips through the underworld, it all feels too dreamlike in ways. Batman’s journey comes off as set pieces rather than a flowing narrative.

And all of that might be on purpose. Snyder peppers the issue with hints as to who Omega is and I’m still not entirely convinced this isn’t all in Batman’s mind. There’s a lot to keep you guessing on a lot of aspects of the issue.

The art by Greg Capullo is as fantastic as expected. He’s joined by Jonathan Glapion on ink, FCO Plascencia on color, and Tom Napolitano on letters. The team brings Snyder’s nightmarish world to life delivering just enough details to shock and have you linger. There’s a brutality to the action that’ll give you pause and have you staring at the page.

Batman: Last Knight on Earth #2 isn’t a bad issue at all. It’s a chapter in the greater narrative and will fit fine in the end. However, the dreamlike flow of the issue creates a choppy narrative that at times is jarring and others makes no sense. It’s just not as good as the far superior first issue.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Red Winter #1

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Batman: Last Knight on Earth #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue of this series was amazing. It’s the future where something calamatous happened and Batman begins on a journey with just the Joker’s head in a jar to join him. Is this something he’s hallucinating? Reality? The comic will keep you guessing as to what’s happening.

The Batman Who Laughs #7 (DC Comics) – The miniseries wraps up and leads into the upcoming Superman/Batman series. The miniseries has been up and down but we’re excited to see how this wraps up.

Dear Justice League (DC Comics/DC Zoom) – This line of graphic novels geared towards kids have been fantastic and we’re always excited to see what’s next. This middle-grade graphic novel has superheroes answering questions about their lives in a series of short stories.

Death’s Head #1 (Marvel) – This comic was unexpected. Really funny with some solid art. Death’s Head has been torn apart and tunred into an amp. Now he wants revenge!

The Goon #5 (Albatross Funnybooks) – One of the most fun and entertaining comics on the market. Think Popeye with humor and horror and you have The Goon. Add in beyond amazing art and it’s a must get with every release.

Killers #1 (Valiant) – Five deadly assassins are recruited into a game of cat and mouse by the mysterious Jonin! The concept sounds awesome and Valiant delivers entertaining comics so we’re always excited to check out a new series from them.

Knights Temporal #1 (Aftershock) – From writer Cullen Bunn and artist Fran Galan the series is about a knight who’s sent to the modern world. The concept has been done but Bunn is a fantastic writer so to see his spin on this is what has us interested.

Manor Black #1 (Dark Horse) – Another comic from writer Cullen Bunn along with writer Brian Hurtt and artist Tyer Crook, this gothic horror series is about a family of sorcerers in crisis. Yeah, we’re sold.

Powers of X #1 (Marvel) – Writer Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men epic continues with this second of dual series that sets up his vision for years to come.

Red Winter #1 (Scout Comics) – Eli Winter is a former NYPD Detective in his 50s, now living in Kapotnya, the most crime-ridden district of Moscow. Eli also now works for a local crime boss. When Eli finds out his son destroyed his boss’s meth lab, we get a series that we’re excited to read.
